Spot On: System Wars 2008

GameSpot asks industry illuminati to predict whether the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii will emerge as the holiday victor, and which will go on to be the ultimate winner in this generation of the console race.

The latest next-gen console battle is well under way. The Xbox 360 was the first to launch on November 22, 2005, in the US, followed by the PlayStation 3 on November 17, 2006, and the Wii on November 19, 2006. However, in Europe, things were turned a little on their head, with the Xbox 360 launching on December 2, 2005, followed by the Wii on December 8, 2006, and the fashionably late PlayStation 3 on March 23, 2007.

The previous console cycle saw the PlayStation 2 scoring a decisive win. Since it debuted in 2000, the machine has gone on to sell more than 120 million units worldwide and is the best-selling console in history so far. After overtaking Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast, which launched in 1999, it went on to fend off new rivals such as the Nintendo GameCube and the original Xbox, which both went on sale in 2001.

Part of the PS2's success was Sony's scoring of must-have console exclusives on the format--including Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the Kingdom Hearts series, and Final Fantasy X. Indeed, many people bought the console just to play Grand Theft Auto III and its two successors, Vice City and San Andreas, which all debuted on the PS2 before being eventually ported to the Xbox and PC.

In today's market, though, high-profile exclusives are fewer and farther between. Many developers are choosing to go multiplatform to recoup the rapidly increasing costs of producing games for the so-called "HD Era." These include traditionally PlayStation-focused Japanese publishers such as Capcom and Koei, which both have announced a strategy going forward to make all titles multiplatform.

What does the industry think? Which console has the best lineup of games this Christmas? Which is most likely to entice consumers to part with their readies? Will there be a console to rule them all?

THE PRICE IS RIGHT...AND THE GAMES

The Wii is the cheapest of the three systems at £179 ($250 in the US)--but its scarcity has led to massive markups on eBay. The PS3 and the 360 have both recently had price cuts, with the new 40GB PS3 costing £300 ($400) and the premium 360 costing £250 ($350). If you want top end, you can get the 360 Elite for £300 ($450) or pick up an 80GB PS3 in the US for $499 or a 60GB while they last in the UK at £349.

The Xbox 360, which has been out the longest, has probably the strongest 2007 holiday lineup, a fact that is somewhat to be expected. The library for the 360 is the biggest and currently adds up to well over 300 games. On the exclusive tip, the hugely successful first-person shooter Halo 3 generated more than $170 million in its first day on sale in the US and sold more than 5 million units worldwide by the end of November. The 360 also exclusively has the newly released sci-fi role-playing game Mass Effect, which has sold more than 1 million copies since its late November release, and the flight sim Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which boosted 360 sales in Japan.

Following on into 2008 and beyond, exclusives coming up for the 360 include Lionhead's Fable 2, the psychological thriller Alan Wake, the real-time strategy Halo Wars, and Silicon Knights' sci-fi action adventure Too Human, which is due out at the beginning of the year.

The PS3 has the fewest games out at the moment, with around 160 titles currently on the market. Recent games, such as Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, have made a stir and have been joined by the recently released SingStar, which gives gamers access to the SingStore to buy new tunes. In North America, the just-released Unreal Tournament III will be exclusive to the console until next year (alongside its PC release). However, the console's biggest exclusives are arriving next year, and they include Ubisoft's first-person shooter Haze and the long-awaited swan song of Konami's popular Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The Wii has just under 250 titles currently out, including the critically praised bestsellers Super Mario Galaxy, RPG Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Hot exclusives coming up include Suda 51's weird world of No More Heroes, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. However, two of the oldest games for the system--Wii Sports and Wii Play--remain among the top titles for the game, since they come bundled with the console and extra controller (respectively).

THE MAKERS SPEAK

Sony has had its fair share of bad publicity, which Sir Howard Stringer has called "unkind," surrounding the PS3. But according to upper management, those teething problems are now behind it. Stringer commented that the PS3 was "making a comeback already" and that production issues had been solved, adding, "We believe PS3, going forward, will be vital to our future and will succeed." The company also touts the PS3's powerful Cell processor as a plus to the system, along with the ability of the console to play Blu-ray movies at a price cheaper than most actual Blu-ray players.

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand's head of marketing, Warwick Light, said that in comparison, the Wii was not actually a next-gen system. He said, "Look at the tangible differences between processing power and scope for scalability between the PS3 and the Xbox 360. It is clear that the PS3 is designed to last until the next generation... DVD is current generation. Why would you support current generation?"

Microsoft has argued that Xbox Live and Xbox Live Marketplace are two of the biggest reasons to go with its console instead of one of its rivals. Xbox Live Video Marketplace recently launched in the UK, Ireland, Canada, France, and Germany and is already going strong in the US, where a wide variety of TV shows and movies are available for download.

Last but not least, Nintendo claims that it is not involved in the console war at all, but is merely doing its own thing and going its own way. David Yarnton, Nintendo UK's general manager, said, "We are not fighting our competitors, we are fighting apathy... Instead of trying to improve technology for its own sake, we decided to focus on those who weren't even playing games, who weren't on the radar."

Yarnton thinks that the Wii is "inclusive, not exclusive" and that it will drive sales outside of the usual "teenage boys." However, one thing that may hinder Nintendo's home run this Christmas is that even if everyone wants one, no one can seem to find one on the shelves.

ANALYSE ME

So how are game-industry analysts handicapping the ongoing console war? Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities believes that the PS3 is going to come out ahead in this cycle--eventually. He explains, "I believe that the Blu-ray functionality built into the PS3 has greater value to a wider number of consumers than does Xbox Live or the fun factor of the Wiimote... Had all three launched at the same time and price, I think the PS3 would have been ahead from the beginning."

However, Pachter puts his odds on the Wii winning this holiday season, simply because of the price. He told GameSpot, "Wii will win this Christmas, because of price. Xbox 360 will finish second, and PS3 a not-so-distant third, again because of the price."

Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets agrees that the Wii is likely to have the merriest Christmas. He said, "For this holiday, the Wii clearly has a lot of momentum." He stated that the console will end up on more lists to Santa because of its cheaper price and strong marketing and because it reaches a broader market than "traditional" consoles like the 360 and PS3. He continued, "Clearly, many consumers are showing that they place a higher value on accessible and straight-forward gameplay and less on high-definition graphics and leading-edge processing power."

However, Sebastian doesn't believe that the race is predictable beyond the immediate future, and he thinks that at this stage any of the three consoles could still end up on top. He said, "It's very early in the cycle, so calling a winner in the console battle may be somewhat premature... Looking ahead to the remaining years of the cycle, we could see a more distinct segmentation of the video game console market. That is, Nintendo selling into a larger market of casual gamers, while Sony and Microsoft battle it out over the traditional core gamers. In terms of market share, I think it's safe to say we will see an even playing field versus the domination of Sony the last time round."

DEVELOPING

All three consoles have their fans and detractors within the industry. The platform that seems to have gathered the most opinions on both sides is Nintendo's Wii, which has been at the front of the firing line due to its runaway success. Electronic Arts was one of the first companies to come out and say that it regretted not supporting the format more heavily from the start.

John Riccitiello, EA CEO, commented, "[This transition has been] harder because of the complexity, and much harder because, unfortunately, we bet a little bit on the wrong horse in focusing so much on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and to a lesser degree on the Wii. And let me assure you that almost all of us in the industry made the same judgment. So after so many transitions of guessing exactly right, we got this one a little bit wrong, and we're dealing with that now with strong investments on the Wii."

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada has gone on the record about his own opinion of the Wii. He believes the console has changed the gaming environment completely and called consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 "overengineered" and "too complex." He said, "There are too many specs--and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of gaming. These consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years, they will fare better."

However, not everyone has been so kind about Nintendo's little console. Sega's US vice president, Scott Steinberg, said that he was "concerned about the depth of the Wii pool." The Sega executive expressed concerns that developers would run out of ideas and that the console might be just a fad. He said, "How much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or five years from now, or 10 years from now? The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple of years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more about the PlayStation 3." However, Steinberg later "clarified" his statement by saying, "I'm not just putting the responsibility of innovation on Nintendo. It's on Sega and all the publishers and developers as well to carry that flag."

Possibly the most famous Wii skeptic is Developer 9 founder Chris Hecker, who gave his controversial opinion at this year's Game Developers Conference. He told the stunned audience, "Everyone loves the Wii. 'Oh, God, the Wii, we love the Wii so much...' The Wii is a piece of ****. Nintendo have uncovered the secret to Wii manufacturing. The way you manufacture a Wii is you take two GameCubes and some duct tape." He then continued on his tirade to accuse Nintendo of not caring about games as an art form and praised Sony and Microsoft for taking them seriously.

However, Hecker later issued a statement retracting his comments, saying, "I do not think the Wii is ****." Hmmm...

Gary Chambers, creative director at Introversion, told GameSpot his personal favourite is the Wii, because, "You can say the controller is just a gimmick or whatever, but I think it adds a lot to the console, and games like Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition are just fantastic. I can't imagine playing them on any other system. I'd love to develop a game for the Wii. I think there is incredible potential for some very unique games, even if it hasn't completely been realised by the industry yet."

However, the developer admitted that although he personally liked the Wii, the PS3 was, in his opinion, likely to ultimately win the war. He said, "The PS3 will win this generation, just as the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 did before it. The Wii is doing incredibly well all over the world, and the 360 got off to a great head start, but ultimately I think the vanity of the modern gamer is going to win out and the PS3 is going to be the console providing the best visuals. As soon as the price drops to a range which the average person can afford, I think we'll see PS3 sales skyrocket right past the competition."

David Jaffe, cofounder of Eat Sleep Play and creator of Sony's God of War series, is also cautious on the Wii, believing that although it is currently the console du jour, things could shift in favour of another very fast. He told GameSpot, "It's easy to say today who the winner is, and that would be Nintendo hands down. But you're starting to notice the winds are blowing in other directions these days. Whether these winds will be strong enough to shift the leadership position in the marketplace is hard to say."

Famed game designer American McGee is more secure in his opinion. He casts his vote decisively for the Wii and told GameSpot in an interview, "From the beginning of this most recent (re)cycle, I've had my money on the Wii. In my opinion, Sony and Microsoft didn't do anything truly innovative this last time around--just your standard hardware upgrade. The success they've seen with online downloadable content was, by their own admission, an unexpected fluke. But Nintendo made a distinct statement about what constitutes a games console, game controller, and play experience. In a sense they removed themselves from 'the war' and created their own playfield." As to second place, he thinks that will go to the 360. He said, "This is mostly because I think Microsoft established a strong early lead with sales and content, and Blu-ray will ultimately fail as a standard."

ALL HAVE A PLACE

A fair few people chose to sit on the fence and show love to everyone. Miles Jacobson, managing director of Sports Interactive, told GameSpot, "I think all three machines are really good, and all of them are going to have exclusive titles on them that you'll want to play... I'm very fortunate in that I've got all three consoles at home, and they all get played. The Wii tends to get played when friends who are nongamers come round, the 360 tends to get played by me, and the PS3 tends to get played by my mates who are gamers because they haven't got one yet... The real winner in the console war is the consumer--how cheesy is that? Well, as long as they can afford to get all three, I suppose."

Jonathan Smith, development director at TT Games, has much the same opinion. He told GameSpot, "The 'console war' is over, and the winner is gamers, who now have more choice than ever."

Turbine Games executive producer Jeffrey Steefel agreed, saying, "What's interesting with the consoles right now is that they're so different. In the past, the console wars have been perceived as just nine versions of the same thing. But they really are this time, completely different, and I think each one draws a different crowd... So now you've got stratification of the consoles, which I think is great for the consumer. It's never existed before."

Ed Daly, studio head at Zoe Mode, also prefers a diplomatic approach. He said, "I hope that across different territories and with different audiences, all three can compete healthily, which is good for consumers and good for developers... At Zoe Mode, we've worked with Sony on Sony platforms, and I've never bought into some of the negativity around PS3. With the likes of Home still to come, I feel the ambition and vision of PS3 could exceed a lot of current expectations." But for Nintendo, "The hard question is whether Nintendo's strategy and Wii software sales can continue to succeed over the lifetime of this generation. Personally, I hope it does."

'THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE'

Some developers think that the current system war will end in a stalemate, with no single format being named a clear winner, contrary to previous hardware cycles.

Denis Dyack, president of Silicon Knights, put the idea forward during his talk at this year's Leipzig Games Convention Developers Conference. Dyack explained to the audience that he believed it to be inevitable that there would eventually be a generic "video game machine," much the same way as there currently are DVD players.

Dyack called the process commodification, and he believes "all technology, under any circumstance, becomes commodified." He explained that there was no clear winner in this generation's system war and that this was leading to problems for developers. He said, "Nintendo has come out of the gate much faster than everyone anticipated, but how about longevity? The 360 is doing well in America, but not so well in Japan. The PS3 is off to a really slow start but they have a good brand name, so the truth is, no one knows... And trying to make a game on all three systems is very challenging, and I don't know many, if any, people that are doing that right now."

After his keynote address, several other members of the gaming industry admitted that they, too, would sleep easier at night if there were just the one console to contend with. Electronic Arts' head of international publishing, Gerhard Florin, also advocates a single, open platform and commented, "We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible." However, Florin thinks this is a ways off, giving the timeline as up to 15 years.

Katamari Damacy director Keita Takahashi also agrees, and he told GameSpot, "I want to see only one major console being retailed on the market, and everyone actually making games for just one console, and bring the price of that console down from what the three currently cost right now."

JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS

2008 looks set to be a huge year in gaming, with a wider range of choice open to consumers than ever before. Video gaming is no longer a niche industry, and its sales are making a noticeable impact on economies all over the world.

It remains to be seen which console will come out on top, or if different consoles will trump different regions, or whether all three will manage to somehow peacefully coexist. Perhaps, even, as Denis Dyack predicts, one day soon the term "system wars" will be irrelevant as a generic "video game machine" comes to market, and developers will have to worry about developing for only one platform, ensuring that everyone with that platform has access to every game.

360 is by far the winner in this race. Currently anyway. The ps3 is too complex for developers to program for. this slows down production of multiplatform resleases for other consoles. Sony will never beat the online service of microsoft, and even with Metal gear solid 4, that one game doesn't compare to all of the fantastic Xbox exclusive titles. Sony will have to do something drastic if they are to change this, but for now im happy with my 360

I agree with the people stating that the Wiimote is simply a gimmick and the gimmick will wear off in 1 or 2 more years. You have to have a balanced tie between console power and console gimmicks bit the Wii is all gimmicks and no power. Right now the XBOX360 and the PS3 deserve to be in the first place equally because it shows that Sony and Microsoft are trying their very best to take this industry more seriously. If Nintendo wasn't an under-achiever, it would have created some new character for the last 10 years and not just recycle and recycle every Mario/Zelda/Metroid game over and over and over again. IMO though.

"deadmanwaltzin so are you saying anything i said was unfounded? i think all my points are adequte. in the end xbox 360 is still using dvds.50gb vs 8gb? i dont think so." Compression and using several DVDs would still make it cheaper to produce than a single blue ray disc. I'd really like to see a game use 50 GB. That would be one huge game with hours and hours of HD movies. Might be useful as a storage media but it's pretty pointless for games and movies for several years to come atleast. That's why i think blue ray will fail as a standard. In the future when more space might be needed we would see something new that will succeed but for now Sony got ahead of the times and the world ain't ready for it . That's my prediction at least :p

I resently got a copy of Lost oddessy asian version which is in full english and works on NTSCJ and PAL 360s and i must say it beats Final fantasy in just about everyway, the person who developed it made the early FF's for the PSX, the battle system is slick and the story really pulls you in with alot of suprising twists along the way, i wasnt to keen on the main characters at first but as the story progresses you really get to like them and see how kick ass they are. I really feel sorry for people who are stubborn and are never going to get a 360 because they are missing out on alot of great games.

Kitsukage , you have a few things wrong. I also try not to consider myself a fanboy, but being an XBOX360 owner I gotta set you straight. 1. XBOX live is free. Demos are free, some updates are free. Yes you must pay a paltry fee less than $5 a month to play online over XBL Gold with others. But, every xbox 360 owner has access to xbox live silver which gives voice chat, freinds, messaging, demos, leaderboads etc.. to FREE. 2. XBOX is not a console purely for FPS, yes, it has ALL the most popular first person shooters, but it has excellent games for every genre. For example RPG - Oblivion, Mass Effect , eternal Sonata with Fable 2 and Lost Oddeysey also Square Enix does not have exclusivity with Sony. They are making games for XBX and Wii. Action/Adventure- Dead Rising, Assassins Creed Racing - Burnout/Forza 3. Square Enix is not exclusive with Sony (just look at FFX1, duh!) 4. Malfunction problems have been dealt with. New manufactured consoles have a cooler running chip so its no longer an issue. Every XBOX comes with a 3 year warranty in case these problems happen. Though I will concede if you turn your xbox from its side/ to flat while playing a game it can scratch( so dont do it!!!) So now, I hope you're a little better informed. I love my 360. Right now its kicking PS3's ass in the games department. PS3 games mostly suck. Nearly the only games on the PS3 with a 9 rating or above are also on the XBOX. Sony's current exclusives are mediocre.

the real ansswer to the console wars is to buy the system you like best. for me its nintendo i grew up on them and will continue to play their systems. Though i must admit the ps3 to me seems rushed. nintendo had a good launch title to go with and has some extremely good games after a year and the ps3 only really started to make a stir with a few games. i think theyll all jsut end up being obselete by whenever someone chooses to make another next gen system, soo really whats the point in arguing. theyll ALL be defunct in 10 years soo enjoy them well they last and dont give a damn about teh winner.

Its interesting to see that in the article, some believe that the PS3 will hit top mark, eventually. As a PS3 owner, I can say it has more appeal to me, than the 360 or Wii; main reason being, the one reason I'd have bought a Wii was released on the Gamecube, before it died, (by that, I mean Twilight Princess) and the 360 is a console more towards those with a mind for FPS or shooting games, since you can't really dispute the fact that a lot of 360 games that have been released are shooters. To point out, Halo, Gears of War, TimeShift and Call of Duty 4, albeit, the latter two were released on the PS3, as well. With that, Sony still have the exclusive addition of SquareEnix, which have done them well, throughout, as well as Konami, who despite their current predicament, (be it true, or a method to drum up sales) are still staying true to their effective routes. With that kind of faith, you can't deny that Sony must be onto a winning formula. Now when compared, the functionality of the PS3 is greater than that of the 360, anyways. I heard that 360 had malfunction problems when it concerned heat generated by the console, and a friend of mine has just had two games scratched to death by his 360, which he believes to be a problem with the console. I've had no problems with the PS3, thus far, and I've had it for about 5 months, now. Then there's the online dispute of the online "stores". Again, I don't really care much about it, unless there's a demo I want to download, of which I'd have to pay a yearly fee for Microsoft to be able to do. Sony, I'm pretty sure, are completely free on those grounds; not even costs to access your own connection on your PS3, or even your PSP. I know its only a small cost, but the 360 owners who rarely play, but want to download a demo before they buy as game likely wouldn't want to spend money like that. But like I'm saying, that's more towards preference. I'm a cheap person like that, so yeah.. :P That aside, I'm not into all this Blu-ray stuff, yet, so its just a little addition for me, at the moment, of owning a PS3. But I can say I'm feeling much more comfortable with the PS3 than I would be with the 360 or the Wii. For one, I've always forgotten controls for the 360 pads, when I've played it at a friends' house, and despite its compact nature, the pad is still more chunky than it should be. I'll probably sound like a fanboy of Sony, but that's far from the fact, because if there's enough games on a console that I like, I will, eventually, get that console.. but Sony has had a winning formula with its pads ever since the PSX. Like the Gamecube pad, you can fit your hand around it perfectly, whereas, in my opinion, there's too much to hold on a 360 pad. Though that isn't really a major issue; just down to personal preferences. Its up to any individual to decide on which pad is the best shape.. but happyunion, outright blasting that the pad is the worst design ever is a bad way to go about saying stuff. Did you ever see the rollerball pad for the Atari 5200? Obviously not.

Happyonion, you said who cares about HD. To answer your question, a LOT of people care about HD, regardless of what console or format they support. HD is the future, and for you to say it is just a fad is ignorant and stupid. As for "sony has crap games" you obviously don't even have a clue what's available on the PS3. Maybe they don't have as many solid exclusives as the 360, but to say all their games all crap is also ignorant and stupid.

The only reason this article and others very much like it is to draw in retarded fanboy comments, ensuring heavy traffic to the site. Y'all think you're gamers? We're the ones who are really getting played by useless articles like these. There wasn't a single useful observation made in this article that settles anything. People are just going to take what they like from this article and ignore the rest, as if they've made their own intelligent statements.

go dawg! right now, the ps3 is piss if you don't need bluray (which is awesome for movies, those who don't think so haven't seen it and/or are stupid). in a year or two the ps3 games will have increased enough for it to be at par or better with the 360 since the ps3 also is more powerful. wii will be outdated and replaced(!!!) within a few years and until then it targets a different market anyway. buy a 360 a year ago, and/or a ps3 a year from now!

Ok lets crunch the numbers. I have a wireless router and I buy a 360 Elite. Wireless adapter: 450+100= 550 Meh I don't mind. I want my movies with higher quality because my friend just got me and HDTV HD-DVD: 550+200=750 Wow this is digging a hole in my pocket. Doesn't matter though. I KNOW! I Wanna play online. 750+ (5 year minimum) 250=1000 And I run the risk of getting a red ring of death?.....Screw this. PS3 all these features for $500. yay PS3. Besides, only reason 360 has more games is because it came out November 05 and the PS3 came out a full year later. Screw 360.

Zelda isn't an RPG.... FAIL Metroid isn't a true FPS either (only in the Primes) Competition will keep one 'generic system that plays all games' from existing anyway... This article didn't do much at all.

Honestly I dont think there will be a standout winner. 360 and wii are for completely different markets. the ps3 though is competing with the 360 and losing. its a worthless overpriced fad. blu ray is never going to replace dvd and honestly who cares about hd well sum people do and theyd get a 360 because its got better online features, better games (the ps3 only has crap and games which r also on 360) and a better controller. WTF WAS SONY THINKING THEIR CONSOLES HAVE THE WORST CONTROLLER DESIGN IN HISTORY!!! the ps2 has better games than ps3 the only reason id get 1 would be 2 play ps2 games which would be a massive waste of $600. Other people who dont care about hd,want something innovative or are part of nintendos pretty well established fanbase would get a wii. the ps3 will flop leaving the 360 and wii to choose from.

ok, seriously, blue ray is the most bull **** fad ever to hit the earth, HD and "blue ray" will never take over regular dvd's anyone with any sense in economics could tell you that; the differences in qualtiy are barely noticable, and the price is outrageous, and i know, Blue Ray has got soo many damn movies, how many now like? 20-30!! wow that could fill a whole shelf... 360 is ballin' there's nothing that can compete, the wii is also doing extremely well, ps3 is just a flop

Some people needs to read the article before posting...not to mention some fanboys secretly inserting their own favorite console's pros in their comments without proofs.

360 is doing great business for third party developers, which is key to console success. It's how the PS2 won last gen, and I think it's how the 360 will be dominant this gen. Look at UT3. Exclusivity didn't boost the PS3 sales, it just dragged the game sales down. I'll bet Epic is kicking themselves. One year after launch, Epic scores big on the 360 with an new IP, Gears of War. One year after launch, Epic flops big on the PS3 with an established, bug buzz IP, UT3. I think it says a lot about the viability of the consoles.

lets think about whos gonna be around in 5 years. PS3 pros: most powerful console, blu-ray discs, free online. cons: expensive and limited backwards compadability. i thinks its because they launched a new version of the ps2 and they want people to buy that. xbox 360 pros: strong games, large online service. Cons: still uses dvd so probaly wont be viable for much longer, online isnt free. Chris Hecker got it right about the wii. "How much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or five years from now, or 10 years from now?" said Scott Steinberg. hes right it lacks the power to play with the big boys. i think the ultimate winner will be the ps3 free online more power and next gen standard are gonna win.

i have a Wii, and play my gamecube games more than any of my Wii games, and im looking to get a 360 soon for live and halo 3. Why? because Nintendo needs third party games!!!! im getting sick of waiting, and the controllers are annoying if your playing a racing game, and i love racing games. Thank goodness brawl's coming out soon.

Im 360 all the way, and i dont have a problem with microsoft one bit, stop being paranoid about the company being evil and out to get you. Xbox live is a great service, dont even try to complain about online play costing, its fifty bucks u hobo, go out and get a job! Halo is the main reason im with microsoft. GIve the game a shot before u shoot it down, it is very unique and requires a completely different playstyle.

I m so use to of wiimote.. tire of those old fashion control sticks. And if I want to go graphic wise, I play my pc. Graphics are important and Grand Mastermind Game Producer Nintendo defintely knows that. They will come up with something very unique. for instance wii fit. trust me they will come up lot of crazy game ....

The Wii has great games, great gameplay, cheap price, free online play that supports games like MoH H2, and has lots of extra features like Virtual Console and Weather and News. But most of it's games aren't that good, and it has the graphics of an upgraded GameCube. 9/10 Xbox 360 has great games, awesome graphics, and great online play. But it crashes a lot, it's expensive, and you need to be a hardcore gamer with a lot of money to get the full boost from it. 8/10 Playstation 3...well...everyone hates it.

TBO, i don't really care who 'wins', we have lots of choice on the market and that's good enougth for me. My Wii is for the exclusives and for friends who don't do games, my 360 is for live and its exclusives as well. The PS3... is difficult :P since i don't really like it :P ... but i guess it has blu-ray and is for people who want top of line gaming and their exclusives. So everyone who says one console is better than the others, you FAIL with a capital F... We all have our different tastes and different consoles attract different types of audiences... but i guess some people can't just leave it at that can they? :(

i have all three systems, i like all three systems but for the 10 billionth time... PS3 - "all the good games are coming this year.." this is all we hear, YET they continue to be delayed, HAZE which i want more than anything right now... ANOTHER 3 months... 3/18... from what? 12/5? then 1/15... and you expect monster games, from companys like rockstar who always push things back, to finish games on time? MGS you think we're going to see Metal Gear ontime?! PS3 is an AWESOME, amazing, wonderful system, i love mine to death, but there is absolutely NOTHING to play, and until the game hits the shelves physically, STFU because EVERYTHING has been delayed countless times so far or has come out crappy on PS3 (see orange box review, UT3 missing promised features - "we'll update it later") while MS managed to get ALL the blockbusters out on time? hmm... i'm worried about my poor PS3, mean while, WARHAWK!!! PS props for Sony, you made a working system, i felt good about paying 500 bucks for it. Definitely has the most features, there is no comparison out of the box. also, i would agree its probably more future proof than xbox, (but doesn't mean it will last longer) XBox360... GAME GAMES GAMES, shut up about hardware, they will fix it for free in about a week, hit the gym lose that third chin and add another year to your life to play the wonderful system, i love it, it had a head start, the games are great, ONLINE is wonderful no matter what you say. i've had it since it came out, and nothing compares, WOW is what? 15 bucks a month for ONE game online, PS online has been free, but its never been good and its always full of hackers... mmm open software... see Socom 2... Microsoft isn't outta games either, there is a list as long as the PS3 one of blockbusters coming, HALO WARS ANYONE, FABLE 2? Wii can sell 2 billion system, good for them, i haven't played mine in forever. it sucks, the games are for 8 year olds and the controllers are annoying. If grandpa wants to play wii bowling to make it through the day, good for him. Super Smash is coming, thank god, but as usual, nothing else from third party... so Wii could be awesome, its cheap and it sells, but lets be real, who cares? do you really play it? I like it, i can't wait for good games, but we keep waiting, i mean Super Smash delayed?! for a last gen system? you mean they don't already know how to make Gamecube games? they are still learning that? concerned? you should be. get out the swiffer, it gets dusty real fast. I play games that are good, i don't care for what system... key word, GAMES... these days, Wii and PS3 you just don't see them... so keeeeep waiting, and thank god for UT and Warhawk

I own both PS3 and 360. The Ps3 is the better console but the 360 has better games. By better console i mean it's FREE to play online, u don't have to buy something to get wireless internet connection and PS3's controls have rechargeable batteries that come with them. Xbox 360 control + rechargeable battery pack $100 AUS PS3 control - $80. Online for xbox 360 cost $80 for a year. i know it's not much but it's free for PS3. And $160 for an add on for 360 so u don't need a cable to connect to the internet is just stupid. but aside from all that it does have the better games :)

I like the whole 'console war' thing if one brand dominated (e.g. the pc) in popularity look what happens to the price, I have an xbox 360 myself, mainly because I wanted to play xbox live with my mates. But I'm glad the PS3 is around or I'd be a few hundred £ out of pocket most likely. Oh yeh, and he's right, the Wii is ****. Great novelty value for the first few minutes though...

All the consoles are doing well, to various degrees. The winner of the console war is the consumer. Though just one system woudn be nice, rather than having to buy three to play all the good games.

It all comes down to what you like, I love my PS3 for its light, easy controlls, Games like God of War and free online connection. I like the 360 for BioShock and halo, but personly I dont realy like the Wii, how many sport games do Nintendo think they can make before it goes stail? I just dont see how you could play games like Prince of Persia on a Wii

I own xbox 360 only and play ps3 often at friends house, the xbox 360 its a lot faster in many multiplatform games but i think a ps3 is a very good machine with a lot of potential, getting logical if we were in a perfect world the xbox will be the winner because its games play the same as the ps3 but with better graphics and frame rate and has got stronger exclusives, but since we're not in a perfect world ps3 could win because of the brand name that was what sold the previous sony consoles. The wii like the other guy said really is a piece of crap sorry... i can't support something that its against evolution cant support same graphics sound and capability of last gen hardware put a motion sensitive control in a gamecube and voila you have a wii ..

Networking issues on XBL? I don't think so. The 360 never has and never will fail. All who say otherwise don't own a 360 and don't deserve to play games.

IAMFEAR13 Ok, maybe it's me, but has anyone else noticed it's mainly 360 fanboys that bash everything else? I don't know. Some little Sony fuker had to pop his head into the XBL forums just to take a jab at networking issues we've been having on LIVE.

sosolidsnake19 i completely agree with the "one console for everyone" vision. while it sounds like communism it would bring all the best IP's to a single platform so everyone could play and enjoy them- imagine halo, gears of war, metal gear solid, final fantasy, zelda and mario all on a single console. on the other hand a little competiton such as the console wars raises the bar for hardware, technology, online services and games which in turn means more gaming goodness for people. here is my perfect vision: the evil M$ goes bankrupt so the ps3 gets all of it's exclusive games such as.... well you know and then nintendo joins forces with the ps3 and allows them to use the wiimote as a peripheral for some games which in turn would result in motion-sensing goodness with stellar graphics. everyone is enjoying metal gear mario and they forget the horrible M$ and the disappointment that was the 360 and the dreaded RROD Correction, moron, it IS communism. That said, anyone with a basic high school education in government will tell you that hurts innovation. Competition is what drove Sony to come out with Blue-Ray. Competition is what compells Microsoft to sink millions of their own capital into publishing Blockbuster games. And regardless of what that Nintendo managers says, COMPETITION is what drove them to design that gimicky little wand they call a remote. It is not only foolish to push for a single console, it's unethical. And to wish that MS went belly up is a horrible thing to say. Not only does wishing bankruptcy on a company conceding to your own defeat as a competitor. it shows you're nothing but a run-of-the-mill fanboy fuktard. And I don't know why you want to call MS evil. I can't go on testimonies, I can only go on what I've seen. And both me, as well as my dad, have gotten good service from MS. I don't think their evil. Methinks you just suck at life.

I don't see how any console except the Wii so far has won from purely a business standpoint. Wii hit it's B/E point almost from the GO. Microsoft and Sony are still waiting to hit their B/E points. Granted they have deep enough pockets to wait it out, I guess. I have the Wii and the 420 ;) and I love them both. So, I think in the end the consumer actually wins out.
