Spot On: System Wars 2008

GameSpot asks industry illuminati to predict whether the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii will emerge as the holiday victor, and which will go on to be the ultimate winner in this generation of the console race.

The latest next-gen console battle is well under way. The Xbox 360 was the first to launch on November 22, 2005, in the US, followed by the PlayStation 3 on November 17, 2006, and the Wii on November 19, 2006. However, in Europe, things were turned a little on their head, with the Xbox 360 launching on December 2, 2005, followed by the Wii on December 8, 2006, and the fashionably late PlayStation 3 on March 23, 2007.

The previous console cycle saw the PlayStation 2 scoring a decisive win. Since it debuted in 2000, the machine has gone on to sell more than 120 million units worldwide and is the best-selling console in history so far. After overtaking Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast, which launched in 1999, it went on to fend off new rivals such as the Nintendo GameCube and the original Xbox, which both went on sale in 2001.

Part of the PS2's success was Sony's scoring of must-have console exclusives on the format--including Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the Kingdom Hearts series, and Final Fantasy X. Indeed, many people bought the console just to play Grand Theft Auto III and its two successors, Vice City and San Andreas, which all debuted on the PS2 before being eventually ported to the Xbox and PC.

In today's market, though, high-profile exclusives are fewer and farther between. Many developers are choosing to go multiplatform to recoup the rapidly increasing costs of producing games for the so-called "HD Era." These include traditionally PlayStation-focused Japanese publishers such as Capcom and Koei, which both have announced a strategy going forward to make all titles multiplatform.

What does the industry think? Which console has the best lineup of games this Christmas? Which is most likely to entice consumers to part with their readies? Will there be a console to rule them all?

THE PRICE IS RIGHT...AND THE GAMES

The Wii is the cheapest of the three systems at £179 ($250 in the US)--but its scarcity has led to massive markups on eBay. The PS3 and the 360 have both recently had price cuts, with the new 40GB PS3 costing £300 ($400) and the premium 360 costing £250 ($350). If you want top end, you can get the 360 Elite for £300 ($450) or pick up an 80GB PS3 in the US for $499 or a 60GB while they last in the UK at £349.

The Xbox 360, which has been out the longest, has probably the strongest 2007 holiday lineup, a fact that is somewhat to be expected. The library for the 360 is the biggest and currently adds up to well over 300 games. On the exclusive tip, the hugely successful first-person shooter Halo 3 generated more than $170 million in its first day on sale in the US and sold more than 5 million units worldwide by the end of November. The 360 also exclusively has the newly released sci-fi role-playing game Mass Effect, which has sold more than 1 million copies since its late November release, and the flight sim Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which boosted 360 sales in Japan.

Following on into 2008 and beyond, exclusives coming up for the 360 include Lionhead's Fable 2, the psychological thriller Alan Wake, the real-time strategy Halo Wars, and Silicon Knights' sci-fi action adventure Too Human, which is due out at the beginning of the year.

The PS3 has the fewest games out at the moment, with around 160 titles currently on the market. Recent games, such as Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, have made a stir and have been joined by the recently released SingStar, which gives gamers access to the SingStore to buy new tunes. In North America, the just-released Unreal Tournament III will be exclusive to the console until next year (alongside its PC release). However, the console's biggest exclusives are arriving next year, and they include Ubisoft's first-person shooter Haze and the long-awaited swan song of Konami's popular Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The Wii has just under 250 titles currently out, including the critically praised bestsellers Super Mario Galaxy, RPG Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Hot exclusives coming up include Suda 51's weird world of No More Heroes, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. However, two of the oldest games for the system--Wii Sports and Wii Play--remain among the top titles for the game, since they come bundled with the console and extra controller (respectively).

THE MAKERS SPEAK

Sony has had its fair share of bad publicity, which Sir Howard Stringer has called "unkind," surrounding the PS3. But according to upper management, those teething problems are now behind it. Stringer commented that the PS3 was "making a comeback already" and that production issues had been solved, adding, "We believe PS3, going forward, will be vital to our future and will succeed." The company also touts the PS3's powerful Cell processor as a plus to the system, along with the ability of the console to play Blu-ray movies at a price cheaper than most actual Blu-ray players.

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand's head of marketing, Warwick Light, said that in comparison, the Wii was not actually a next-gen system. He said, "Look at the tangible differences between processing power and scope for scalability between the PS3 and the Xbox 360. It is clear that the PS3 is designed to last until the next generation... DVD is current generation. Why would you support current generation?"

Microsoft has argued that Xbox Live and Xbox Live Marketplace are two of the biggest reasons to go with its console instead of one of its rivals. Xbox Live Video Marketplace recently launched in the UK, Ireland, Canada, France, and Germany and is already going strong in the US, where a wide variety of TV shows and movies are available for download.

Last but not least, Nintendo claims that it is not involved in the console war at all, but is merely doing its own thing and going its own way. David Yarnton, Nintendo UK's general manager, said, "We are not fighting our competitors, we are fighting apathy... Instead of trying to improve technology for its own sake, we decided to focus on those who weren't even playing games, who weren't on the radar."

Yarnton thinks that the Wii is "inclusive, not exclusive" and that it will drive sales outside of the usual "teenage boys." However, one thing that may hinder Nintendo's home run this Christmas is that even if everyone wants one, no one can seem to find one on the shelves.

ANALYSE ME

So how are game-industry analysts handicapping the ongoing console war? Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities believes that the PS3 is going to come out ahead in this cycle--eventually. He explains, "I believe that the Blu-ray functionality built into the PS3 has greater value to a wider number of consumers than does Xbox Live or the fun factor of the Wiimote... Had all three launched at the same time and price, I think the PS3 would have been ahead from the beginning."

However, Pachter puts his odds on the Wii winning this holiday season, simply because of the price. He told GameSpot, "Wii will win this Christmas, because of price. Xbox 360 will finish second, and PS3 a not-so-distant third, again because of the price."

Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets agrees that the Wii is likely to have the merriest Christmas. He said, "For this holiday, the Wii clearly has a lot of momentum." He stated that the console will end up on more lists to Santa because of its cheaper price and strong marketing and because it reaches a broader market than "traditional" consoles like the 360 and PS3. He continued, "Clearly, many consumers are showing that they place a higher value on accessible and straight-forward gameplay and less on high-definition graphics and leading-edge processing power."

However, Sebastian doesn't believe that the race is predictable beyond the immediate future, and he thinks that at this stage any of the three consoles could still end up on top. He said, "It's very early in the cycle, so calling a winner in the console battle may be somewhat premature... Looking ahead to the remaining years of the cycle, we could see a more distinct segmentation of the video game console market. That is, Nintendo selling into a larger market of casual gamers, while Sony and Microsoft battle it out over the traditional core gamers. In terms of market share, I think it's safe to say we will see an even playing field versus the domination of Sony the last time round."

DEVELOPING

All three consoles have their fans and detractors within the industry. The platform that seems to have gathered the most opinions on both sides is Nintendo's Wii, which has been at the front of the firing line due to its runaway success. Electronic Arts was one of the first companies to come out and say that it regretted not supporting the format more heavily from the start.

John Riccitiello, EA CEO, commented, "[This transition has been] harder because of the complexity, and much harder because, unfortunately, we bet a little bit on the wrong horse in focusing so much on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and to a lesser degree on the Wii. And let me assure you that almost all of us in the industry made the same judgment. So after so many transitions of guessing exactly right, we got this one a little bit wrong, and we're dealing with that now with strong investments on the Wii."

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada has gone on the record about his own opinion of the Wii. He believes the console has changed the gaming environment completely and called consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 "overengineered" and "too complex." He said, "There are too many specs--and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of gaming. These consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years, they will fare better."

However, not everyone has been so kind about Nintendo's little console. Sega's US vice president, Scott Steinberg, said that he was "concerned about the depth of the Wii pool." The Sega executive expressed concerns that developers would run out of ideas and that the console might be just a fad. He said, "How much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or five years from now, or 10 years from now? The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple of years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more about the PlayStation 3." However, Steinberg later "clarified" his statement by saying, "I'm not just putting the responsibility of innovation on Nintendo. It's on Sega and all the publishers and developers as well to carry that flag."

Possibly the most famous Wii skeptic is Developer 9 founder Chris Hecker, who gave his controversial opinion at this year's Game Developers Conference. He told the stunned audience, "Everyone loves the Wii. 'Oh, God, the Wii, we love the Wii so much...' The Wii is a piece of ****. Nintendo have uncovered the secret to Wii manufacturing. The way you manufacture a Wii is you take two GameCubes and some duct tape." He then continued on his tirade to accuse Nintendo of not caring about games as an art form and praised Sony and Microsoft for taking them seriously.

However, Hecker later issued a statement retracting his comments, saying, "I do not think the Wii is ****." Hmmm...

Gary Chambers, creative director at Introversion, told GameSpot his personal favourite is the Wii, because, "You can say the controller is just a gimmick or whatever, but I think it adds a lot to the console, and games like Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition are just fantastic. I can't imagine playing them on any other system. I'd love to develop a game for the Wii. I think there is incredible potential for some very unique games, even if it hasn't completely been realised by the industry yet."

However, the developer admitted that although he personally liked the Wii, the PS3 was, in his opinion, likely to ultimately win the war. He said, "The PS3 will win this generation, just as the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 did before it. The Wii is doing incredibly well all over the world, and the 360 got off to a great head start, but ultimately I think the vanity of the modern gamer is going to win out and the PS3 is going to be the console providing the best visuals. As soon as the price drops to a range which the average person can afford, I think we'll see PS3 sales skyrocket right past the competition."

David Jaffe, cofounder of Eat Sleep Play and creator of Sony's God of War series, is also cautious on the Wii, believing that although it is currently the console du jour, things could shift in favour of another very fast. He told GameSpot, "It's easy to say today who the winner is, and that would be Nintendo hands down. But you're starting to notice the winds are blowing in other directions these days. Whether these winds will be strong enough to shift the leadership position in the marketplace is hard to say."

Famed game designer American McGee is more secure in his opinion. He casts his vote decisively for the Wii and told GameSpot in an interview, "From the beginning of this most recent (re)cycle, I've had my money on the Wii. In my opinion, Sony and Microsoft didn't do anything truly innovative this last time around--just your standard hardware upgrade. The success they've seen with online downloadable content was, by their own admission, an unexpected fluke. But Nintendo made a distinct statement about what constitutes a games console, game controller, and play experience. In a sense they removed themselves from 'the war' and created their own playfield." As to second place, he thinks that will go to the 360. He said, "This is mostly because I think Microsoft established a strong early lead with sales and content, and Blu-ray will ultimately fail as a standard."

ALL HAVE A PLACE

A fair few people chose to sit on the fence and show love to everyone. Miles Jacobson, managing director of Sports Interactive, told GameSpot, "I think all three machines are really good, and all of them are going to have exclusive titles on them that you'll want to play... I'm very fortunate in that I've got all three consoles at home, and they all get played. The Wii tends to get played when friends who are nongamers come round, the 360 tends to get played by me, and the PS3 tends to get played by my mates who are gamers because they haven't got one yet... The real winner in the console war is the consumer--how cheesy is that? Well, as long as they can afford to get all three, I suppose."

Jonathan Smith, development director at TT Games, has much the same opinion. He told GameSpot, "The 'console war' is over, and the winner is gamers, who now have more choice than ever."

Turbine Games executive producer Jeffrey Steefel agreed, saying, "What's interesting with the consoles right now is that they're so different. In the past, the console wars have been perceived as just nine versions of the same thing. But they really are this time, completely different, and I think each one draws a different crowd... So now you've got stratification of the consoles, which I think is great for the consumer. It's never existed before."

Ed Daly, studio head at Zoe Mode, also prefers a diplomatic approach. He said, "I hope that across different territories and with different audiences, all three can compete healthily, which is good for consumers and good for developers... At Zoe Mode, we've worked with Sony on Sony platforms, and I've never bought into some of the negativity around PS3. With the likes of Home still to come, I feel the ambition and vision of PS3 could exceed a lot of current expectations." But for Nintendo, "The hard question is whether Nintendo's strategy and Wii software sales can continue to succeed over the lifetime of this generation. Personally, I hope it does."

'THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE'

Some developers think that the current system war will end in a stalemate, with no single format being named a clear winner, contrary to previous hardware cycles.

Denis Dyack, president of Silicon Knights, put the idea forward during his talk at this year's Leipzig Games Convention Developers Conference. Dyack explained to the audience that he believed it to be inevitable that there would eventually be a generic "video game machine," much the same way as there currently are DVD players.

Dyack called the process commodification, and he believes "all technology, under any circumstance, becomes commodified." He explained that there was no clear winner in this generation's system war and that this was leading to problems for developers. He said, "Nintendo has come out of the gate much faster than everyone anticipated, but how about longevity? The 360 is doing well in America, but not so well in Japan. The PS3 is off to a really slow start but they have a good brand name, so the truth is, no one knows... And trying to make a game on all three systems is very challenging, and I don't know many, if any, people that are doing that right now."

After his keynote address, several other members of the gaming industry admitted that they, too, would sleep easier at night if there were just the one console to contend with. Electronic Arts' head of international publishing, Gerhard Florin, also advocates a single, open platform and commented, "We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible." However, Florin thinks this is a ways off, giving the timeline as up to 15 years.

Katamari Damacy director Keita Takahashi also agrees, and he told GameSpot, "I want to see only one major console being retailed on the market, and everyone actually making games for just one console, and bring the price of that console down from what the three currently cost right now."

JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS

2008 looks set to be a huge year in gaming, with a wider range of choice open to consumers than ever before. Video gaming is no longer a niche industry, and its sales are making a noticeable impact on economies all over the world.

It remains to be seen which console will come out on top, or if different consoles will trump different regions, or whether all three will manage to somehow peacefully coexist. Perhaps, even, as Denis Dyack predicts, one day soon the term "system wars" will be irrelevant as a generic "video game machine" comes to market, and developers will have to worry about developing for only one platform, ensuring that everyone with that platform has access to every game.

They all have a pretty good chance of being console of the year but it depends on peoples opinions on the games. it also depends on the systems playback such as gameplay, graphics, and hardware. and Money. wii so far has money, and gameplay. the 360 has good graphics, and alot of good shooters, alot of hardware i might add. and for the ps3 its cost is high but i heard sony was going to fix that, but its advantages are graphics, free online play(for now), and MGS4.

I can't afford a high speed connection. Maybe I should sell my ps3. Any buyers? .....Anyone? No, I should keep it. I'll use the $500 paper weight again some day. But then again, I'm a little tired of stealth and racing games.

A one console world is like communism: a good idea, but due to human error it would probably fail. With no competition between brands to create better machines and games, companies would just slack off and create a bunch of s***** games because they would still make money( kind of like most 3rd party Wii games).

A (one console world) would be fantastic, I hope I live to see it! Whether you are a PS3, 360 or Wii fan I don't think anyone with half a brain can deny that this would ultimately benefit "US" the gamers. I'm no lover of any brand, and the idea that I have to buy a "certain" console just to play a "certain" game has always rubbed me the wrong way. One console, many developers = a much better experience for gamers at a lot less $$$$! As far as the PS3 having better visuals than the 360...lay off the drugs! I have personally played both consoles and see NO difference in visual quality. Both consoles are about the same when it comes to this. I also totally disagree with HardcoreBunni's assessment, it is not necessarily the hardware manufactures but the developers who are responsible for game content & quality. If we were living in a (1) console world this would give developers a lot more say as to the specs off the one console being released in relation to the power of the development tools they use to produce these games. This would even (most likely) slow down the new hardware cycle that developers have been complaining about for years, allowing them to exploit the power of the current gen tech and make some $$$ off of it before the manufactures try to jam new tech down our throats at ridiculous prices!

The wii will easily win the sales war because of it's price theres no doubt about that, Ps3 has the upper hand on the visuals but the 360 easily wins with the quality of the games, such as fable 2, too human and now gears 2.

With Blu-Ray now the next gen standard for HD films and games. Also with HD tv's price drops that have hugely encouraged home owners to go out and take the plunge into HD programming. The PS3 is pretty much a must-have media item. Its got built in wireless and streams DIVX and XVID films from a pc network and updates its firmware constantly to beat out any BluRay player for around the same price. So people who arent even into games will be getting a PS3. With its High End cell processor, its got the longevity to go on for years innovating game graphics technology. And as a second system. If you have a good PC, you have the very best choices open since you will eventually get all the XBOX360 games on a pc, and for much cheaper or even pirated by then. XBOX360 has one thing going for it, and that is its got a great multi-tasking operating system built by the makers of windows so everything is unified online, its much like a PC. Eventually SONY will learn to unify their PS3 operating system, and integrate it more dynamically online. Then they will have every ACE over the Xbox.

I am a PS3 owner (Hopefully soon a PSWii owner :D ) and I believe that all the systems are amazing. If all the companies joined together, Sony could contribute realistic graphics, Microsoft could contribute great online experience, and Nintendo could contribute creative, fun games. But we all know that it will (sadly) never happen. :(

Of course you'd want a stand-alone wireless adapter and not a built-in one!!! Such things are often very cheaply made production-wise and could sometimes break. Would you like to have your Ps3 sent in for repairs when it happens or just exchange the adapter???? Yup, thought so. 360 solution is better.

Personally I think the PS3 just hasnt got good enough games. The 360 has more 90% rated titles than both the wii nd the ps3 put together...doubled! But it doesnt really matter who wins because the games will keep rollin off the shelves with so many multiplatform producers now, and I agree with Miles Jacobson and the fact that as long as you enjoy it its alright. But I cant wait to play Fable 2, Too Human, Gears of war 2 and GTA4!!!!

I under stand what your trying to put out spartanlaser. The 360 definitely had it going but in the near future, the PS3 will definitely come out on top. Given, take a look at how long the PS2's life span. Its still going! No doubt the PS3 will have a solid ten years ahead. Never the less, when you speak of games, the PS3 will get its exclusives in 2009. Its off to a shaky start, but a solid straight win in the end.

I think that the xbox 360 will do the best because the PS3 had a bad start and there arent many games for it and the wii does not have enough gaming power but it makes up for it in creativity. If the wii starts making more good games like SSB Brawl then it will be this generations winner. But the xbox 360 is the best all around system (although the red ring of death). It has the most fun games, good graphics and is priced pretty well. I hope that one system does not "win it all" but that the market will continue to stay competetive so that we consumers pay for the game and not the name.

i feel sorry for sony as they've priced themselves out of the market, and also because of a conference a while ago with kojima (spelled right?) was asked if MGS4 would be on 360 and he replied "no. well, not yet." with a sly grin. and when i do see someone buying a ps3 its always pre-owned so that can't be good. i think wii has stolen the win from 360 and ps3 is at the back, all good consoles just some VERY bad errors on sony's side. also the PS3s breaking down is a cause for concern.

I have both the 360 and a wii. I personally prefer the 360 for games as they are more inclined towards my style of games. My belief is that nintendo has already won. They are the ones raking in the cash because of the wii. Based on sales numbers it will be out of PS3 and 360 which will all come down to exclusives and the success of Blu-Ray. If Microsoft wanted to they could create a Blu-Ray player though as they have the money to burn so blu-ray functionality is still a possibility for the 360. Only time will tell here though but I'm personally hoping for the 360 to beat the PS3.

Interestingly enough, I've read quite a few comments here about "everyone knowing teenagers are the main consumers of games" and this being a reason the Wii will fail in the long run. Funnily enough, one teenager also commented that he had a Wii but would be buying a PS3 or Xbox 360 as soon as he got a part time job when he was 16... And there he hit the nail on the head without realising - teenagers AREN'T the main consumers of gaming, not any more anyway! It's us in our 20s and 30s who are the real targets, the people who grew up on gaming so are still keen on it, but more importantly, WE CAN AFFORD IT! Hence why any teenager who writes off the Wii is just doing that typical teenage thing - assuming life ends at 20 and everyone who's older doesn't know what they're talking about :-)

Halo is not finished. Bungie has been hinting at future projects in the series, Peter Jackson's Halo Chronicles are coming, as well as Halo Wars. Its really kind of pathetic that the only game Wii owners have to look forward to is Brawl (which comes out tomorrow, provided it isn't delayed in the next 12 hours), while 360 and ps3 owners are getting Fable 2, Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2, Force Unleashed, and everything awesome...

well i have a wii and i heard from a friend that blu-ray officially won the war on hi-def... so i know that 360 will start to fall ps3 is ok but it's too much of the same feel to me staring at the screen blankly and pressing buttons... all that changes is better graphics and thats cool... the wii is ok too but it's all too different on the hands and just about the same and the visuals... 360... well all thats keeping it alive is halo but halo 3 seems to be the last of the series so it seems that it's time is just about over...

I don't understand why the 360 is so under rated. Have any of these people played on xbox live at all. Really. Xbox live is years ahead of its time its the ultimate online multi player experience. The wii is the most inovative console since atari it has so much potential. If i want to watch blue rays I'll buy a blue ray player not a PS3. Sony is going to need something really amazing to happen to win my support this console war.

I agree with Dion4ever. The Wii is a great console as well as the other two and if you want good graphics go watch a movie. But I think the Wii could have been much better than it already is. I hate the fact that Nintendo portrays the wii as a casual console for anyone to pick up and play. I mean there should be casual games for everyone to enjoy, but since Nintendo wants to appeal to everyone they should also be focused on the core gamers like us. Those are the youth, with the majority of them being teenage boys (and even girls) who like HARDCORE GAMES. Nintendo needs more hardcore titles and although I am not the kind of guy who focuses on graphics, this is the next generation and Nintendo should step up their quality on the visuals. I mean look at the 360. Games like Bioshock, Mass Effect and Assasins Creed are so fun and enjoyable to play and with their beautiful graphics and visuals you really get the realistic feel and atmosphere that a good game needs. Nintendo should have also included a hardware with more features like the PS3. I swear if Nintendo made more hardcore titles that utilizes the remote in such a way that the fun would be endless and if the graphics were much better, then the wii would have dominated the market. I dont understand why Nintendo cant seem to see that teenagers are the majority of the worlds gamers and if they realize that I know Nintendo can make more AAA hardcore gaming titles. Of course I love the wii and what it has to offer but I really hope that at least they can make more hardcore titles. That would really change a lot of skeptical peoples prespective of the wii's game library. We can only hope that the wii delivers in the years to come. oh yeah and MasterNuts the Wii is NOT a toy. Games like Metriod Prime Corruption, Twilight Princess and Brawl are games I would play for many years. the games that a family is more likely to play are games like Wii Sports and Brain Age and those dont appeal to me. I also think that Nintendo shouldn't rely on thier classic first party's so heavily like Mario, Zelda, Metriod and other series. They should produce more enjoyable, innovative, and deep games with a new concept. The 360 has made many new titles that have become big hits like the aforementioned games. I think that all the Wii first party titles are awesome and when Brawl comes out the wii and the game are both gonna start kicking so much a** around the world but we need more hardcore titles. That would add to the library of the Wii and make it all the more worthwhile for EVERYONE.

Well the Wii has a good concept but i see it more like a family toy, not like a gaming console, ive currently tried only the 360 and the wii and i have to say regardless of the graphics i prefer the xbox games mainly because a lot of them are maturer and more complex (for my taste) also there is a bigger range of great games for now in the 360. Also i dont think the Wii take a huge step forward in gaming, its a good idea but i think is not great, they are getting close to something really good but i could never play GoW, Mass effect or Bioshock with the current Wii's controls, and also most of the WIi games are about using the damn cursor as an aim or whatever. When it comes to multiplayer, its hard to find someone within your family that likes to play 360 games, making you stick with xbox live playing with people you really dont know (you know it!), from the other hand the Wii can be an exelent activity for a family reunion, i can tell it because ive seen it , everyone in my family liked it and played it, not like the 360, but when you become a gamer watching the same tennis match like a hundred times makes you get really bored. So in conclussion i think the Wii its acomplishing 1 of Nintendos statements about introducing new people to gaming with the easy controls and simple games, but when it comes to serious gaming the Wii is out, 360 have a lot of great 3rd Party's with exelent titles, it may not revolutionize the gameplay but until nintendo can make their Wiimote fit 100% in gaming im prefer to stick with the standard controller. (I didnt talked about the PS3 cause i havent tried it :))

Sammojo, you call the statements fanboyish, but you are no different. What he means by overengineered and too complex is that Sony and Microsoft put music, pictures, files, media clips, downloads and more that it is so focused on a computer rather than gaming. The statements are right in most ways, Sony and Microsoft just made a hardware upgrade, the only thing different from the PS2 is better online access, an XMB, wireless controller and better graphics. Same thing goes with the Xbox 360. However the Wii on the other hand may not have improved so much on the graphics, though it still has improved, it has made something completely different. While the PS3 and Xbox 360 focus on their graphics, the Wii brings out good gameplay. But don't get me wrong PS3 and Xbox 360 are awesome. I love all the consoles, have a Wii and a PS3, which is in Sony's hands currently getting fixed from a HDD corruption. But like I have said to a few people before, if you want good graphics just go watch a movie.

"...called consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 "overengineered" and "too complex." He said, "There are too many specs--and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of gaming. These consoles are mismatched to today's environment." This is so wrong. Its called a manual and since when do you need a "deep" knowledge of gaming. You don't 'need' a high-def TV, and saying that they are "too complex" is just a cop out, it means nothing and has no implications. The Wii is not a better hardware than the others because it is easy and simple. It is a better concept, but saying the hardware is better is ignorant and fanboyish. The only reason it is doing well is because of the new concept and controls and the fact that it appeals to non-gamers. "The way you manufacture a Wii is you take two GameCubes and some duct tape." This statement is mostly true, except you just need to add a new controller. The hardware is basically gamecube x 2. The Wii is a good console, but they did have to trade off graphics and features for low price and good controls. Had the Wii come out with the same visual quality in its games as the other two consoles, and the same number of features, then yes, it would probably have been the best console by far, but it didn't and so now gamers must make the decision between graphics and features, or fun controls. The Wii is the cheapest yes, but you get what you pay for. As for the 360 vs the PS3, who knows at this point, but I plan on owning both...

@Okassar Ur a new-gen gamer and thats a shame that you have to act one! pretty graphics! whooo oooo pretty graphics! I still play pac-man to this day! why? cause its fun to play! Personally im getting a little tired of first-person shooters. Thats why I strongly support the Wii! Sure its a fad and its suppose to be a fad! Didn't you read what Nintendo's intentions with the system? They don't want to be in this war. it just so happens people like bar owners, office managers, heck even senior citizens home are buying the wii! why? cause its very easy and fun to play! you can't hold your ps3 controller like a bat and swing can you? I missed the good ol skool gaming!

PS3 IS going to come out with some new exclusive titles and ideas. However they don't have the advantage. Sure, Blu-ray has won the new format wars. But think about it, PS3 don't have the advantage. What if (and legally they can do this) Microsoft decided to come out with a new 360 bundled with the new CPU chip that won't burn out your system along with more memory, possibly packaged with a game AND install a blu-ray player selling at the same price as the PS3? who will the cumsumer pick up? As for Nintendo, I got my Wii on the first day before picking up my 360 because Nintendo has always been a household name for most families and even though their graphics is slightly better than the GC, its still considered next-gen because of the new gaming experience with the wii-mote! I mean who would of though you can slice and dice like as if you had a sword? Can you image a light saber battle with your wii-mote? can you do that with your PS3? Well thats just my opinion. Don't get me wrong I'm not hating on the PS3 thats just how I see it for now. And most of those analysts has some really strong point. Both PS3 and the 360 are just like its previous predecessors just with a new powerhouse. You play Halo 2 on Xbox. point and shoot the same way with Halo 3 on 360. On Wii you literally point and shoot!

Wii won last year, 360 won the year before that and ps3 is goingto win overall...i mean look a the ps2....its lasted 7-8 years and still standing strong with a HUEG and MAGNIFICENT collection of quality games. Also, this is just me you all may think im speaking crap, but i think in the end, all consoles are all just slowly evolving into computers..... i mean, the wii, the 360 and ESPECIALLY te PS3 all have hardrives, the ps3 and 360 have awesome graphics, the wii has a freaking wireless MOUSE for god's sake!!! And then you've got the PS3....its practically a super-computer.... I put 2and 2 together and i think that these companies (even though microsoft already makes computers) will all end up producing computers....but not the type of computer you sit on with the tiny screen and type up work reports and bi-annual superflex account submission thingies, but more like pure gaming computers.. well thats just me....:P ....you all have your own opinions :)

In the console wars the continuing issue of which system is better always comes up. Which system will ultimately win out is the second question always asked. My answer for both questions (seeing as I have all 3, and feel my opinion is therefore valid and non Bias) is Xbox 360 by far the best system despite its design flaws, and its Red Rings of Death as well. Simply put in the end the idea of a gamerscore was one of the best ideas in all of gaming easily the best idea since eliminating cartridges and using CD's. SOme people might downplay the gamerscore and something meaningless which in the end of course it is. However I feel that the gamerscore allows you to achieve something beyond just beating a game. Take Call of Duty 2 for example, how many people would attempt to play this game on Veteran if it wasnt for achievements? Beyond what I have already stated the other systems have their positives and negatives. The Wii is really fun for all the "Wii" games, however if Smash brothers and Mario Kart using the motion controls it will be a complete waste, hopefully nintendo will get the idea and allow you to attach a gamecube controller, or a control pad to your Wii wand. It is just insane having people waving there arms all over I would much rather have a wireless controller like that of PS3, or 360. Or even make gamecube wireless controlelr that works with the Wii. Again though Wii will continue to have the best exclusive games, like Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Metroid, Zelda, and any other Mario game. Which is why nintendo will always have gamers that buy their system and are faithful to nintendo. So in conclusion: Wii Positives: "Wii" games, nintendo exclusives, also built in Wireless connectivity, Wii also acts as a gamecube, free online (but what good is it). Wii Negatives: Frustrating Controls, Lack of real controllers, No online gameplay, The cost of the Nunchuck and then the Wand by themselves is ridiculous it should be 1 package, in addition have to buy component cables is a little bit stupid as well. The PS3, the hardest system to figure out. Great graphics, Built in Wireless, Blue-Ray player (for the price of a Blue Ray player alone the PS3 should be considered a great deal), HDMI port, Internet Connectivity from your TV. Huge Memory Bank with 60 GB. Automatic system updates, the PS3 controller is still the best, and the self charging is now a blessing. These are all great features but they are missing 1 thing: GAMING. If it is supposed to be a gaming system make some good games, there is not one game now that Grand Theft Auto is on XBOX as well that you can say I need to get that system for. Madden is still better on PS2, so thats out. What are the exclusives? Banjo Kazooie? I mean really is that worth it. Overall my opinion puts PS3 as #3 in this mix of the console wars. Xbox 360 great graphics, poor design, small memory with 20 GB(Now you have to spend 550 to get an elite which is ridiculous), great online gaming, no wireless, no HDMI (for us original buyers), The HD DVD add on is now obsolete with toshiba giving up on HD TV, Halo 3 is a great Exclusive, and again achievement points are a big selling point, However the Red Rings kills XBOX being able to blow the other two systems out. Xbox marketplace is set up nicely and if they come out with Goldeneye which is a rumor it will give XBOX another big jump. However everything "extra" you have to pay for with xbox which sucks you dry. The other systems all have things built in and all have many good "freebies." Hell after writing this blog its made me realize XBOX isnt as far away as I thought and if it wasnt for the achievements the playing field would really be pretty damn evem between the systems.

The 360. Blu-ray is finished, though, and all of the big 360 titles seem to port to the PC. I'm not confident I want to stand by the 360 anymore.

So, EA will focus more on the Wii now will they? About time! Let's see some half decent ports of benchmark games from the world's premier games developer such as FIFA and Burnout for once. FIFA 08 for the Wii was truly woeful, for example. I am a proud Wii owner, but I firmly agree with everyone who has stated that the Wii is 'just a fad' and 'it will stuggle in a few years time'. At the moment, there simply isn't enough depth in the games released for the console. The best games are classic Nintendo franchises, half the games mention 'Mario' in their name and the other 240 or so titles on the Wii are games for kids who are barely tall enough to reach the TV to play the console. Having said that, I have never had more fun playing any games console than I have done playing the Wii, and it has great potential for some truly amazing games, such as first person shooters. Metroid Prime 3 did wonders for that idea, exhibiting arguably the best graphics and gameplay in a Wii game, combining it with an intricate and simple control system. Furthermore, it is nice to see that Nintendo are targeting a different audience and in conjunction with that, attempting to get video gamers off their arses and burning some calories instead. However, no matter how many people they get playing video games, teenagers will still be the primary 'consumers'. Microsoft and Sony realise this. Once the euphoria has died down, the Wii will struggle for ground. In my opinion, if you desire to own a Wii (providing you can obtain one), you would be best also obtaining a PS3 or an XBOX 360, depending on your personal preference (and your financial condition. I myself plan to buy a PS3 once I can find a part time job when I turn 16. I won't buy an Xbox though, I just hate them for some reason), or even keep your 6th gen console. Otherwise, you will soon tire of the repetitiveness the Wii induces. For teenagers, the most important customers, online play, great graphics, and mature titles, are for the win!

Im pretty sure the PS3 will sell more units overall in the end, fidelity to their home brands wont allow any American product to sell, while we welcome theirs as we are used to it by now. As far as which system wins thats very relative. Having no shares in either 3 companies i couldn't care less which one sells the most units in this or that part of the world, the only place it has to win is in my livingroom. So far my 360 has been the best gaming investment i ever made as i loved all its exclusives and all the multiplatform games i play were superior on it. This may all change, there may be no games on the PS3 now and only Mario Galaxie on the Wii, but theres bound to be more in the future as i am certain i will end up with all 3 systems in the end. Its just that right now i don;t want a BD player and there is not one game out or anounced for the PS3 that i want to play. As for the Wii i really liked Galaxie but thats it and its far from justifying 300$. With the hours i spend on my 360 and their not so reliable hardware i think i might end up having to buy a second 360 before i see a reason to buy a PS3, but with the games comming this year having to buy a new 360 would still be worth every penny.

ps3 outsold 360 in january already. their overall units wont catch up for a while though, the 360's year head start gave them a huge advantage as well as a huge downfall (extreme hardware issues to the point of the console no longer working). i'm sure microsoft has bsed a bit by counting the consoles that they replaced under warrenty instead of just the ones SOLD, but sony and nintendo would have done the same thing. its gonna be closeer and more well rounded this year

"ShaunFroggatt I resently got a copy of Lost oddessy asian version which is in full english and works on NTSCJ and PAL 360s and i must say it beats Final fantasy in just about everyway, the person who developed it made the early FF's for the PSX, the battle system is slick and the story really pulls you in with alot of suprising twists along the way, i wasnt to keen on the main characters at first but as the story progresses you really get to like them and see how kick ass they are. I really feel sorry for people who are stubborn and are never going to get a 360 because they are missing out on alot of great games." some are just against the x360 without giving it a chance and just hop on ps3 saying it is great because a few companies refuse to branch out. i have my x360 for 2 yrs and guess what it never gave me any problems. no overheating or loud noises. some of you are not taking care of your system. no one i know has any problems with their x360!! i am glad capcom saw the light!

I own both a 360 and a PS3 (can't find a wii in the stores) and I love them both, and love both companies. the 360 is better right now for online gaming, but the PS3 wins hands down in almost all areas in my opinion. The PS3 backward compatibility on my 60GB is near perfect (I've tested about 60 games but I cant believe sony removed this backward compat model... bad bad move) while on the 360, it's on a game for game basis which is tragic. Not nearly as good. Second, the wireless internet on PS3 is flawless, on 360, I needed to bring a cable to it since I didn't want to buy the add on, and xbox online hasn't been kind to me with connectivity at times. The 360 is too loud when playing the 360 games. The blu-ray player on the PS3 makes it truly a bargain as a piece of hardware, and I should know since I design microchips some of which go in these game systems. It looks phenomenal and now that bluray seems to be winning its amazing functionality for the system. From what I can tell the graphics on the PS3 looks a bit better, and I like the built in HDMI. One wire, simpler. Also the upscaling for PS2 games is truly amazing and worthy of the purchase alone for serious gamers since the PS2 had world class games. The PS3 processor isn't just amazing, it's an evolution of the nature of computation (parallelism) which will have amazing implications far in the future, just wait. PS3 so far has online capability for free. If that continues when the system really takes off, then wow. To be fair, the PS3 should be superior since it's come out later then the 360, but I must admit it wins me over. I'd prefer all my friends make the move to PS3 once their online revs up. As a hard core gamer, the PS3 is truly beautiful. As long as the games come, and truly leverage the capabilities of the PS3, I can't see how this system won't be seen as a piece of art.
