Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

Sony has issued an encouraging but indecisive response to Microsoft’s invitation to unite the online networks of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One within certain games.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

The ball is clearly in Sony's court now and they can't hide behind the "MS doesn't want it" curtain anymore. The idea was always MS didn't want it because people pay for Live. Now that curtain dropped and Sony has no excuse to not work with them regarding cross platform play. If it's "for the players" then this will happen.

@sargentpsgamer: This could be a very clever corporate power play by MS, don't take it as a saintly move yet.

@kyelo: I'm not and can see MS perhaps trying to take a low swing, but Sony does it too. Whenever cross platform was brought about Sony always tried to be the "good guy" and blamed MS for it. Sony is always "open" to it. Now it is served to them and they are steering clear? Address it or don't, that's all I'm saying.

@sargentpsgamer:

That's what they did though. They said their open to cross plat play and would talk to any publisher or dev wanting to do it.

MS said it was up to the devs as well.

You can't give a blanket yes for all games because MS only does it for Windows 10.

M$ is trying to keep people from buying a PS4 due to the fact that PS4 has a larger user base and is optimal for online.

@wanderingknight: How on Earth is PSN optimal for online if it suffers more from stability issues than XBL?

@dogmapyramid: People are gonna go by how many times XBL was "down". Can't send messages=XBL down. Same thing for both consoles. They never really go down, only time one went down really badly was a few years ago with the PS3.

They should have some way to tag a person if they are playing on Xbox, PS4 or PC.... Just so we can keep the communications in pvp games civil.

@merwanor: "Just so we can keep the communications in pvp games civil." I know you were joking but all 3 communities are toxic af. At least on console you have kids yelling at you and its pretty funny, but on PC you have grown men calling you n***er and other slurs lol. Just got done playing CS GO and its so toxic its ridiculous. Rather have it toxic than civil tbh :/

The statement isn't unclear, they said they've already been doing it since the ps2.

I didn't own a ps2 so I don't know if it's true they've been doing it this long but it should be easy for gamespot to look up.

@lrdfancypants: No. GameSpot asked "will you work with Microsoft and allow cross platform play" and Sony simply jumped to the few games that have PC players in it. They didn't answer the question, thus it is unclear if they will allow Xbox to PlayStation play.

FF on PS2 only cross plays with PC, not Xbox.

@sargentpsgamer:

MS is only going to allow it on games that are on win 10.

Sony is supporting it on other versions of Windows.

One thing everyone is leaving off is MS said it was also up to the devs. Same as Sony.

@yukushi: I wouldn't say Xbox One isn't doing that badly, it's just the fact that MS wants to focus Windows 10 more so then ever. Remember that consoles like Xbox One will still benefit for those who don't game on PC or just wants different experience when gaming on there favorite consoles.

Sounds like someone didn't do their research before trolling.

I'm pretty sure the lowest level MS employees prob earn a month what it'll take you a year to earn and you're here bashing a console box online while they make money...talk about frustration xD
