Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

I'd love to cross platform play on my PS4, but not with Microsoft.

Tbh i don't like this.

MS is pushing Win10 too much. Their "new" UWP idea, which still has multiple unclear agendas is at the center of it.
We are not seeing "an invitation" to the Windows OS in general, we are seeing an invitation to the Win10 and UWP.

Trying to get access to the major part of the console market (MS + Sony's share) would allow them to increase their sales because the of the current trend (choose a platform that has more people in it) of the buyers.

While Sony is not stupid enough to sell their golden chicken (network), they are trying to be "open" with per-project cooperation, which would have benefit for them too (and not just MS).

UWP would allow more money for MS (30% iirc), and increased sales of software (due to access to a network with more users) would net them even more, even thou their console doesn't "earn it".

Simply put, MS is trying to net on Sony's success and trying to look as a good guy while doing it, when the actual truth is they are trying to damage their reputation if they don't share their network.

Just ask MS if they are willing to go cross-platform with Halo, and you will see their faces change color.

@noirtenshin: now that MS is on the other end they want Sony to play nice lol but i dont see open cross platform between MS and Sony ever happening. I was shocked to see Sony working with Steam

Sadly if you dont have exclusives you dont make money :/ which i understand but what i really hate is timed exclusives as if for example im going to buy a Xbox to play the new Tomb Raider...no i have a brain and can wait

Though i hope this GFWL 2.0 dies a quick death we already have too many PC stores for games

@Mokuba34: cross multiplayer has nothing to do with exclusive content. It has to do with allowing gamers from Xboxone to play against games on PS4 who own the same game. Before you had no real option other than to play with only gamers on your system.

Games would obviously still be exclusive to one system or the other. In all honesty it's a real shame MS and Sony don't combine forces on one system. Imagine how amazing that would be.

@OrgeLambart: oh you mean a monopoly of console when they dont have to add anything new to each system and just add small things to it and charge 50% more calling it a "Deal" NO having Sony and MS fighting with each other is BEST for gamers people wont spend money to innovate if they have no competition

Great example of this is local ISP like Charter cant go a month with out something breaking or getting too many people on the line it provides dialup because they are to cheap to upgrade anything as they have no one to compete with so you pay their price or have no internet

MS isnt going going to allow open cross multiplayer as they want people to buy their system this is nothing more than a marketing ploy to make Sony look bad when they say no much like MS laughed at Sony last gen

@Mokuba34: the PC is already far superior of a gaming platform, better everything, consoles get better exclusives, but those exclusives are spread across 3 systems. As for the whole adding new stuff to the system... WTF are you talking about, Xbox one and PS4 are already running on like 5 year old hardware (possible even older) The technological advances from the PS2 to the PS4 are quite minimal in the grand scheme of things, only reason it seems so great of a leap is the PS3 lasted about 8 years or something like that.

The breaking up of games across multiple platforms is just stupid and causes gamers to lose out on great gaming experiences. As for you talking about Sony or MS... meh, I could care less, I game on the PC, far superior experience in just about every way..

@noirtenshin: The Halo thing already happened: Halo Online, a F2P game available to Russians only. Some guys tried to mod the game so it could be played in NA, and MS went cuckoo-nuts trying to shut them down. It's just a free game too, and it's still on PC, so no harm done, but MS showed their colours right quick.

@freeryu: You just implied that M$ sees that they can milk gamers wallets with a F2P game. Unfortunately for MS they'll find that not too many PC gamers care about Halo anymore, and they certainly won't use the Win 10 app store to buy it.

@fedor: M$ can milk gamers with a F2P game lol. If Halo 5 came to PC for free req packs would sell like crazy. Every Halo game that comes out besides ODST I think PC gamers cry and beg for it. Halo 5 seemed the most likely to come to PC. Sony can do it too with Bloodborne or somethin.

I think it was 5 or 6 years ago that Sony proposed the exact same thing that Microsoft is now proposing and they got shot down hard. Back then, Microsoft was enjoying solid XBox 360 sales and were charging for XBL, while PSN was free. Valve has proposed the same thing several times and Microsoft's answer has always been no. Not surprising to see that they're the ones now promoting the same cross-platform play that they've always been so strongly against... I wonder why.

All that being said; I really do hope Sony bites, and they probably will seeing as they've always been open to the idea. The time has come for cross-platform play to happen. The only major hurdle I can really see against it is EA and their love affair with Origin.

@Mirimon78: they denied it because Sony's servers were complete and utter garbage. They were free for a reason, meanwhile MS had far superior servers and thusly didn't want Sony's garbage servers to have their gamers thinking it was MS's fault.

With that said.. meh.. PC gaming far superior to anything you can find on the consoles..

GameSpot, why are you trying to make this out like Sony and MS are going to be working hand-in-hand here? There's no need for Sony to say anything about MS just like MS said nothing about Sony at all. They said they will continue to work with third-parties for cross-play. That's all they need to say. They otherwise have no say on how third-parties decide to handle online activities other than providing them with the tools needed to manage PSN accounts on their own servers.

This article makes very little sense. You're trying to draw a line between two things that doesn't need to be drawn. This only has to deal with MS and Sony interacting with third-parties, nothing about interacting with each other at all.

@christophern4g: Are you serious? Anything that has to do with connecting to XBL or PSN needs the approval of Microsoft and Sony respectively. There can be no cross-platform play on those 2 networks unless both companies agree to let it happen. Activision, who is the biggest proponent of cross-platform play of the Big Three, has never been able to get it going for their games simply because Sony and Microsoft have never agreed to it. And it's not for a lack of trying on their part either.

They're a mega-corporation. It's not like they can just make snap decisions on these things.

Also, I find it odd that Nintendo seems to have been left completely out of the discussion. Do people in the industry already know the NX won't be comparable to the XB1/PS4?

@varmintx: Nintendo's next system will be on slightly less powerful than the Sony and MS system, but Nintendo will have Mario and all their other characters come out and dance around... plus more Aimibo's and a new controller that you can play with your shaft.. It'll be glorious, Nintendo thrives on making hardware that gives them profits immediately.. thusly the systems will always be weaker, even if they are comparable, by the time Nintendo brings it to market, Sony and MS will already be talking about their new systems which will be even more powerful than the current ones.

Nintendo should just hope out of the console market and license their games..

Sony may have reservations cause if everyone suddenly finds out you can cross play between PS4 and Xbox One then it might sway some people to buy an Xbox instead cause they can still play with their friends on PS4.
