Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

Sony has issued an encouraging but indecisive response to Microsoft’s invitation to unite the online networks of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One within certain games.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

It would be great if this happened. Come on Sony and Microsoft, come together on something. Not only would this help both systems, it'd even help game developers. I mean, some games I could see myself getting on one console, and my brother getting on another, so we could play that way.

This would be a great move for gaming as a whole, people would be able to have whatever console fits their needs and still be able to play online with anybody, win-win. Fanboys will be the only ones who may dislike this for seeing their beloved company cooperating with the supposed enemy, so another win-win for gaming for spiting fanboys.

A move like this could really help both companies in the long run. Plus, it'll make a lot of ppl happy. I know plenty of people who aren't really gamers but even they lament the fact that there is no option for connecting between Xbox live and psn

@bjklol: technically is not about only chatting between platforms, the consoles are for gamers, for chatting you can use Android, a laptop or any other solutions

@iohannfus2015: Not the point. People just want to play a game with their friend without having to purchase the same console.

It would be pretty cool to play cross platform between Xbox and Sony. It would certainly see a massive increase in users on any one game that supported cross platform, so that can only be good. I guess you still need the hardware/back end support servers/cloud etc.

However for the love of christ, can you imagine the console wars? It would be like if we took a snap shot now we're currently in the cold war era. Lot's of talk, abuse, threats, - no action as such just whiney bickering biaches going back and forth. Then to step back in time to WWII where you could actually play and beat your foe, be it a PS4 or XB1 player. The game sites may just go in to melt down.

As the old saying goes, ''If you can't beat them, join them''.

PS4 beat the sh1t out of xb0ne, so microsoft is waving the white flag.

Ultimately, if Microsoft just allows their XBOX ONE games to use the same gaming protocols as the PC games do (i.e. present themselves online as PC games) then how will Sony be able to stop their customers from engaging in cross-platform play with Microsoft's customers?

you want good hardware...go sony. You want good software engineer, good visionaries, good innovation and basically, the future, go MS.

Ive said it for months...these are likely the last consoles you see in their current seperate state. MS is taking steps after steps to transition gaming to ONE open network and on the PC.

@Kezzy123: You're perhaps the only person I've seen who understands the hardware / software split between Sony and Microsoft. Sony makes fine products, but they couldn't engineer themselves out of a digital paper bag. Software is Microsoft's bread and butter, and it shows.

Bigger pool of players, fine, but sadly, that also means bigger pool of hackers/cheaters (from PC). I am a PC gamer, but is sad how many cheaters/hackers there are, and how many developers don't take security seriously, unless, this will force the developers into tighten the anti-hacking, anti-cheating security/policy what so ever.

Sony, you are forgetting 360 was part of that too. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing they are leaving that part out.

That's not what I was saying. The 360 was also part of FFXI ecosystem, which you think they'd bring up.

@jvss27: PS+ and XBL are the monthly fees. I mean if you own a PS4 you don't need PS+ tbh. I don't own one but their biggest exclusives are single player games and they're all worth buying if you have a PS4.

This can only be a good thing it means games with smaller audiences will have larger pools of players to play with. for example the Japanese are a large portion of Metal Gear Online's multiplayer on PS4 (about twenty odd pages of servers) whilst the Xbox one community servers you can count on one hand most days. Allowing the two to pool together will benefit all.

And whilst we're at it we'd best pull this thorn out of ourselves; you're all dicks. Xbox, PS, PC, Wii U, every last one of you (and I) is a dick that someone dislikes (including me) so having the desire to not play someone because of their purchase choice is a shallow one. Get over and play some damn games because we all know deep inside that each platform is not perfect.

Microsoft didn't know what their consumers wanted and had to strip everything out the moment they announced it, Sony wouldn't know Database Security even if it broad-sided them with a baseball bat, Nintendo can't seem to make a console without totally screwing up the marketing so the majority of their consumer base thought their next gen console was an expensive peripheral. And finally steam is too busy hoovering up money to notice the large number of shite-shovlers pushing below alpha builds of what can't even be called games in the hope some gullible guy with excess change drops their money into it.
