Sony May Finally Allow PSN Name Changes

Stuck with an embarrassing or outdated PSN ID? You may be able to change it (maybe).

For reasons that remain unclear, Sony has never allowed anyone to change their PSN name. But now, a new survey making the rounds suggests that Sony may finally allow you to.

The website PushSquare has obtained a Sony survey that states that Sony has been "exploring the possibility of adding a feature to PSN that lets users change their ID." According to the survey, players would be able to change their PSN ID "multiple times" for free, though only once every six months. Under the proposed system, if you changed your name and wanted to revert to your original tag, you would have to get in touch with Sony's customer support team.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony May Finally Allow PSN Name Changes

The survey, at least the information relayed by PushSquare, does not mention any details about whether or not more name changes would incur a fee, or what that fee would be. By comparison, Microsoft lets you change your Xbox Live Gamertag once for free, while additional changes incur a fee. Given that it has taken Sony so long to finally (maybe) let you change your PSN ID, it's nice that the company is apparently not planning to charge for this service.

Bear in mind that this survey is not binding, as a line states, "We can't be sure whether this feature will be added or not, but we can be sure your opinions on the matter will be heard."

At PlayStation Experience in December, PlayStation boss Shawn Layden said he hopes that by the next PlayStation Experience in 2018, he won't have to answer more questions about PSN name changes. The suggestion here is that the ability to change your PSN name may finally be available by that time; PSX is historically held in December.

Sony's explanation for why you cannot change your PSN name has bounced around a bit over the years. In 2014, Layden explained that it wasn't a technical issue keeping the feature from being implemented, but instead it came down to Sony's efforts to prevent trolling. In 2015, PlayStation's Shuhei Yoshida said Sony's engineers were looking into it but were unsure if it would ever be possible to deliver the feature.

@killercondoms: The reason a lot of us want to change it is because we made it when we were under 13. For example, mine is is KristoYeet. Understand?

@vlonexeon: Oh I get it, some people just aren't very creative and have Ids that are quite lame or as you said were young when making it so at the time it was something you found funny or interesting but now that you have matured you've out grown it or simply want a change.

Actually some corrections. Sony allows Japanese accounts to change their display ID. Then you also have the fact that Sony themselves can force change a PSN user ID. One guy had "Satan" in his name or whatever and people reported it so they gave him a new name. Now because the system was never designed for a name change this completely fucked up his account. All his trophies from the original name are gone from his new one. His leaderboard rankings in various games were messed up. I think he might have had some problems with a couple game save files.

Why are people so confused about why it's not an option currently? The network was built without that functionality, and it was clearly done in such a way where you can't just add it in. It would require massive backend changes to the network, which would have a massive ripple effect and could break any number of other things. I'm sure Sony wants to upgrade the network anyways, since it was essentially cobbled together for ps3. At this point it's just inevitable

I'd pay $10 for a name change. But I guess they would have to allow it first. ;)

@WautraetsM: Love how you ignore the fact that Nintendo didn't even allow you to choose a name until the switch. Only over a decade after they joined the online community. Anything to push your fanboy love for a game company, right. At least my PSN name is my choice, unlike forced friend codes.

@WautraetsM: the reason it has not been implemented yet is because sony did not plan the ps3 network architecture efficiently back in 2006. they did not have the foresight to easily allow psn name changes... a lot of that old code evolved and improved, but the ability to change psn names has always impossible to do unless they gave the network a severe overhaul and somehow found a way to implement it. they must have spent tens of millions on this feature by now and it looks as though they have finally managed to correct their infrastructure to allow the change.

nintendo has its own problems. no cloud saves in 2018. required friend codes in 2018. the worst implementation of voice chat ever seen...

"Under the proposed system, if you changed your name and wanted to revert to your original tag, you would have to get in touch with Sony's customer support team."

Just like that? Would someone be able to get back his/her previous ID from, let's say, one year ago? Would the old ID ever enter an "up for grabs" list?

Hopefully the next survey will be about adding sorting options to the PS Store download list.

@E_J_S: If they'd let you change it once every 6 months then you wouldn't need to "get back" your old ID. Just change it again, as long as it's still available. But who knows how long they take to make used names available again.

And as was already mentioned in another article here the next PS4 fw update is supposed to add functions for your games library, including the option to hide demos and beta clients.

@banhammer: I just forget names. Yeah my Xbox account is tied to like 200 dollar worth of stuff (when purchased during sales and stuff, might actually be more right now), but like 90% of that stuff I don't use and probably wouldn't even remember missing

In a way I just like to start fresh every now and then. Old consoles and devices forced into it, now there are options but most of the past is just clutter that should stay in the past

@ltjohnnyrico: Why do so many people feel the need to constantly change their online name? Is it a mood based thing? It's just an online id, hardly relevant.

@Atzenkiller: No idea .. i don't think the people requesting the feature want to constantly change their names .. maybe just being given the option to do it at least once might be enough! Still its a feature that should probably be there!

@ltjohnnyrico: I think its just folks who created a name way back and as time has passed just want it to be something different now. Not necessarily change it all the time.

PSN usernames (and other consoles.) are like tattoos. I bet there are many out there that after a few years kind of wished they had picked something different.

@dragoonmike: yeah?? well my PSN name is DarthRevenX and i honestly can't consider myself a SW fan anymore.....i want a name change, just cus the feature isn't anything you want don't mean it should be right for everyone.....

note how my PSN name isn't some crappy 666 or xXx BS, it's just a name, I threw the X in there in case I wasn't the only one to use the name cus I didn't want a number.....not being cliche was my main goal, being somewhat original was my other goal....

maybe when they roll this out my name can become something like SpockIsGod or something lolz but more likely I'll go something Green Lantern mythos.....pfft Spock is god LOLZ :]

@dragoonmike: On the PlayStation Share blog this subject has 31,194 yes votes out of 35,851. It is the second most requested feature, and the single longest requested feature. You don't have to see a reason for it, enough people do for Sony to know they need to at least try.

@pumpkinmancer: Well, obviously they didn't consider it important enough so far. But I also don't see what would be so difficult about implementing it if so many people are asking for it. Well, big international companies tend to be very slow in many things, especially if it doesn't directly concern profits.

@Xristophoros: Dude, how did you come up with all this crap? They probably spent tens of millions on this? Are you serious? Any company that would throw away so much money for no reason would go bankrupt quickly. This stuff really doesn't make as much effort as you seem to think. Tens of millions, man...

It's all just a matter of if something's worth focussing on. If it was, as it is worth it for MS to provide backwards compatibility for the Xbone, they would have done it a long time ago. But it seems that it's worth doing for them now. The technical stuff is hardly the issue here, I'm sure Sony is more concerned with the legal stuff and other irrelevant crap that big international companies think about that doesn't really concern anyone else. That's usually the main reason why simple stuff like this takes so long to implement.
