Sony Is Publishing Nintendo Switch And PC Games Under New Label

Unties is a new publishing label from Sony Music.

A division of Sony is to publish video games for, among other consoles, Switch, the company has announced. Sony Music Entertainment has launched a new publishing label called Unties, whose upcoming projects include a game, titled Tiny Metal, that's coming to Nintendo's hybrid console as well as PC and PS4.

Unties has so far revealed three more projects: one for PS4 and two listed for "PC / TBA," hinting they could come to other platforms later on. Sony Music says the label has been set up "to unearth high-quality [indie] titles … and utilize SME's vast entertainment business wisdom in order to expose them to as many consumers as possible." It went on to say it intends "to free creators from the myriad ties that bind them when it comes to publishing their games" and "make free, limitless publishing a reality."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony To Publish Nintendo Switch And PC Games Under New Label

No Caption Provided

This isn't the first time Sony has published games on non-PlayStation consoles: Sony Online Entertainment previously published games such as PlanetSide 2 and Payday: The Heist on PC. SOE, which was separate to the PlayStation brand and Sony Interactive Entertainment, was later sold off and renamed Daybreak, no longer a part of Sony.

It's interesting, then, to see Sony--albeit, again, not the PlayStation or SIE division--entering the multiplatform publishing business once more, this time on a rival company's console. For more, check out some images of Tiny Metal above or a trailer here.

Sony, Sony, Sony........what are you doing? You're supposed to CRUSH this damn competing toaster; NOT help it out!

Hmm...well, as long as you give it awful titles like Titty Soldiers, I suppose it's OK. That can only hurt them. But don't hand over the good stuff! What you should be doing is get Zelda to PS4, dammit!

All these clickbait headlines. Sony Music is as much an association with Sony's Playstation as the Seattle Mariners are to Nintendo's Switch!

So they’ll publish games on different systems but won’t support crossplay?

@sladakrobot:and made sound chips for the SNES before that. This is neither of those though since it's Sony Music- think of it like the Seattle Mariners, now only a minor ownership by Nintendo, making games, people could twist the headlines to say that Nintendo is now making games for Sony. These clickbait headlines do that...

@jimclirad: It's not clickbait, and I don't see how that analogy works. This IS Sony doing multi-platform, which is kind of interesting at the least.

Hell, Microsoft's released at least some games on Nintendo's portables too...and they were actually good games! (Don't know if they have since the GBA and DS though...?)

@lonesamurai1: It looks like a good tablet/phone game.

(There are dozens of Advance Wars clones out there; bite-sized "strategy-lite" titles intended to be played on the toilet.)

So basically just another publisher who has nothing to do with PlayStation trying to convince small indies that it's better to sign with "Sony" cause it'll sell more games, pretty much their sales pitch to musicians. Do they keep 75% of the profits too?

@alaskancrab: It's not another publisher, it's Sony.

I think this is kind of neat/interesting, not sure why people are pretending it's not what it is.

Don't know if this is even new, at least for P.C.

I recall playing Everquest II which was 'Sony Online Entertainment'. The Nintendo Switch thing is interesting though and would like to see what becomes of it.

@kaminobenimizu: Until they feel it's impacting their market share. In MHO the Switch is the perfect compliment to the PS4. Through both I get so much fun.

@darkelf83: Nintendo's handhelds have always been perfect compliments to any generation of consoles. Their games always had that "on the go" vibe. And now they have the ultimate handheld by far that nearly all 3rd parties love.

I wonder if they'll ever do a pure home console ever again, or just put out more powerful Switches over time.

@kaminobenimizu: I'm all for more powerful Switches. I've never been a handheld gamer, but the Switch is great on the go. I was so excited about the rumors of it being a hybrid and very happy to see Nintendo taking the different path.

@slypher9: Not just Japan. Nintendo handhelds sells like crazy everywhere. It's the home console sales that dropped in Japan. Anyway, the portable PS3/360 device many dreamed about is finally on the market, and making them happy. And surprisingly, it managed to get DOOM and the latest Wolfenstein.

It's off to a surprisingly good start.

@kaminobenimizu: Yeah, it really is. Just the games THIS year the lineup's pretty strong, and thing is the *3DS* has actually had as strong a year as ever (maybe one of it's strongest years), so imagine how long the Switch is going to go for, when it's bajillions of times more powerful. (Not that the 3DS is actually "weak" save by comparison to the last two generations of consoles...it's still impressive in it's own right.)

@wolfpup7: That's why I sometimes say Nintendo is done with handhelds for a time. The Switch is less expensive than what the 3DS used to be, yet still far more powerful.

GB/GBC>Portable NES

GBA>Portable SNES

DS>Portable N64

3DS/N3DS>Portable GameCube/Wii

Switch>Portable Wii U/PS3/360

All they have to do is wait to have enough money to release a really unique, yet powerful home console, or go the Switch route forever (which is far from bad).

Since the difference in power from PS3/360 to PS4/XB1 is not as big as the leap from PS2/OXB to PS3/360, Nintendo closed the gap in the handheld realm in a big way. We might even see the Souls series on Switch if lucky (content unique to switch would be nice, like a Bowser fight).

@proceeder: Atlus, who is owned by Sega, makes Persona. Sony has nothing to do with the franchise.

@derangel: All you said in the first sentence is true. I don't know if the second one is.

There should be a reason why Nintendo gets Persona knock-offs and the cannon get released on PS.

P.S.: Q isn't cannon. It's a mistake, an error, it should never have existed...

@proceeder: Why is it a mistake? I started it a while back and it seems good, and it got good reviews.

I'd assume it hits Sony's systems because they're the "main" system in Japan. Would be nice for it to hit Xbox/Windows/Switch though...hell, Persona 5 would actually run fine on Switch since there's a PS3 version that's supposed to be fine, and Switch is "last gen +" that would have no problem (if the coders are solid).

I am wondering if they'll be holding online multiplayer on the PC versions of the games they publish hostage for money like they do on PS4. If they do, I'm going to try to make an effort to avoid their garbage. If they don't try to pull that kind of garbage and avoid implementing abusive DRM, I'm hoping they'll port some of other titles to PC instead.

@super-khalid89: Nintendo has been failing since 1889 (yes, 1889), since it has been failing for soooooooo long, do yourself a favor and stay far away from it, as it can die any second now you know?

Meh. I'd be interested if they funded Switch ports of popular PC indie games but that's about it unless they have an awesome game up their sleeve.
