SNES Classics Sells 2 Million Units Worldwide

That's lot of units sold in just one month.

The SNES Classic is really popular. Nintendo announced today that it sold 2 million units worldwide, which is remarkable given that the $80 system only launched at the end of September. Clearly, there is demand for retro consoles, which is no surprise given how popular and in-demand the NES Classic was.

Presumably due to this incredible demand, Nintendo is re-launching the NES Classic in 2018, and Nintendo said about this, "We are hoping that consumers eager to purchase this system will wait just a short while longer."

A recently discovered trademark filing suggests that a Nintendo 64 Classic might be next. It remains to be seen if this will happen, but given the enormous success of the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, we wouldn't exactly be surprised to see that happen.

The SNES Classic comes with 21 games, including the previously unreleased Star Fox 2. GameSpot's review of the system praised it for being an "easy, accessible, and convenient" way to play classic SNES games.

The system outsold the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in the US during September, despite only being available for two days in the month.

Nice. Kudos to Nintendo. I was able to get one at launch and it’s pretty cool. I still wish that Chrono Trigger had been on there but oh well, I still have it on the Virtual Console and the PS1 version on the PS3 whenever I get the urge to play it. I wasn’t able to get the NES Classic Mini when they launched so I’m looking forward to their relaunch of that one.

@nintmda Glad to see stores are enforcing a "one per customer" rule.

Still haven't been able to get one.

Best buy customer service told me to get one from one of those selling apps if I really want one to play. LOL

This is just ridiculous.

Good for Nintendo. This retro craze thing is really translating into big bucks for all those companies that choose to spend the time investing in it. It's a genius move when you think about it; playing off of people's nostalgia. All the more reason to give weight to those rumors about a N64 classic in the future being something more than just gossip.

@dudebropartyyo: Yeap, I have already installed more than 60 games including Mortal Kombat 1-3, Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Country 2+3, Alien 3, NBA Jam and many others. I am having a blast atm playing local co-op! Nostalgia ftw!
