SNES Classic Edition Pre-orders Available Right Now In The US [UPDATE: SOLD OUT]

Here's your chance to secure one.

Update: Sure enough, the SNES Classic has sold out. We'll report back as other retailers bring their SNES Classic pre-orders online, though keep in mind we don't yet know how soon those will be coming.

Original Story: The Super NES Classic Edition is available for pre-order right now in the United States. You can place an order through Walmart's website, but hurry--it's possible they will sell out quickly.

Now Playing: 6 Games Missing From The SNES Classic Edition

The micro console was announced In June and a round of pre-orders became available in Europe soon after. However, there has been frustratingly little word on how or when those in the US would be able to pre-order. If you miss out on this Walmart availability--or simply prefer to shop elsewhere--it seems likely that other retailers will offer pre-orders prior to the system's release on September 29.

No Caption Provided

For $80, the SNES Classic includes a total of 21 of the Super Nintendo's best games. One of those games is Star Fox 2, a title that was never officially released to the public. You can see all of the SNES Classic games here.

Last year's NES Classic Edition was notoriously difficult to come by. It sold out well in advance of its launch, and additional shipments were gone virtually the second they became available. This resulted in prices skyrocketing on the secondhand market. Nintendo ultimately discontinued the system before demand could be satisfied--a situation that many fear will also be the case with the SNES Classic. Nintendo has already said its current plans are only to offer the system until the end of 2017, but it claims it will offer "significantly more" units this time around.

I really don't understand how anybody would want one of these aside from collection purposes. I have an android tv box which i use as a retro gaming hub. It can play 1000s of games with the emulators from google playstore for a fraction of the price.

@noones-my-name: You just answered your own question. People who want these are collectors. There's zero value in ROMs.

@JustPlainLucas: Yeah very true, they are more for collectors. But i dare say emulators are more versatile with save states, filters etc.

@superklyph: Actually I said it can PLAY thousands. But I will say I doubt a tear gas grenade will come crashing through my living room window followed by a SWAT team.

@wafflekings: I never knew anyone who had actraiser, never heard of this game until roms were a thing. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it was a popular game. Chrono, pilot wings, turtles, un squadron are more legitimate requests in my opinion. Also disappointed us version doesn't get mystical ninjas. That was way ahead of its time but aside from myself never knew anyone who had it.

@7tizz: they've been doing this for thirty years. Artificially short supply and then let the newspapers tell everyone how scarce it is. Of course this backfires on them as soon as they run out of drawing fanboys will buy anything they put out. Then mysteriously supply appears

@bickle2: Really? You think people want things more because they are hard to find? In that case, I have a closet of rare beanie babies to sell you...

@Daveof89: you've given a wonderful example, I want you to look at how in demand it has scares those beanie babies were 20 years ago. Nintendo thinks they're a toy company and not an electronics manufacturing, they think that fads are good for business rather than just pissing off their potential Casual customers. Scarcity drives fads. Doesn't matter that will be a steady supply in 18 months

@JohnCrichton:

It's not false scarcity if it's actually scarce...

@doctor_mg: Perhaps 'false' may have been the wrong word. 'Fabricated' scarcity is more accurate.

@dirthurts: either Nintendo has the most incompetent manufacturing team in the entire electronics industry, or they've been producing artificial shortages for the last 30 years.

@dirthurts: Which this does, since there is a well documented 30 year pattern of behavior. If Nintendo still doesn't know how many systems to make after 3 decades, something Sony and. Microsoft have zero issue with after the initial launch bump, it's incompetence. Or the far more likely trying to keep their in the news with repeated sellouts and "they'll be here Sunday" stories. They send out a handful of units and repeat. Why people can't see this is truly beyond me.

@bickle2: People like dirthurts have low intelligence and are slaves to cognitive dissonance. Anything they can't comprehend is immediately directed to the ''crazy conspiracy theory'' part of their brain.

Either that, or he is a fanboy making excuses.......probably a lil of both.

@visforvictory: Nintendo is a cult frankly, and thankfully a slowly dying one as more and more people start realizing paying full price for decade old hardware from a company that will never understand the modern world is silly. Is Mario Kart good? Yup. $500 (look at your receipts kids.) good? Nope. It's the same reason why Zelda has outsold the console by about 30%. The cult are the ones who buy, and when they finally got theirs, mysteriously Switch will go into regular supply and interest will dry up outside of the event titles

@visforvictory: A much dumber man's apple. At least their stuff works properly, isn't kludgey, and has the specs to run the law test mobile apps.

@dirthurts: is this system made differently than the nes classic? If not there is no reason they couldn't continue to produce those instead of quickly moving to another product they won't be able to make enough of and with the n64 classic possibly coming next year not sure what the end game is here. It's certainly not to sell as many products as possible for a profit like most businesses would want to do. Not sure if it's a full blown conspiracy but it's definitely a hype builder. If their were going to be enough of these for everyone alot of people wouldn't be talking about nintendo so much right now.

@muppetbabymastr: There is one very good reason. They licenses for the games likely expired. You contract these things for a limited time, and after that they license no longer permits the use. A greedy company probably saw the success of the system and refused to renew, realizing they could make more than 2 bucks a pop on their game.

It's rarely a matter of hardware.
