Shadow Of War Review Roundup [Updated]

Shadow of More or Shadow of Bore?

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was a surprise hit when it launched in 2014, and we even named it our Game of the Year. Three years later, its sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, is about to launch.

It's already been the subject of controversy: DLC honoring Michael Forgey, a developer who passed away last year, came under fire after there were indications that a portion of the profits wouldn't go to Forgey's widow and children. Publisher Warner Bros. later apologized and made the DLC free for everyone. Shadow of War's microtransactions have also been criticized, as the first game didn't include them.

Now Playing: Middle-earth: Shadow Of War Video Review

Otherwise, however, Shadow of War seems to be going down well with critics. We awarded the open-world game a 7/10 in our review. "It tries to be larger than its predecessor … yet it leaves you wanting less," wrote Justin Haywald. "But at its core, it's a fun experience with brilliant moments that provide fascinating insight into some of the untold stories of Middle-earth." Read more in our full Shadow of War review.

GameSpot -- 7/10

"And that addition sums up several of Shadow of War's additions--things like the storefront and the menus and loot system don't make the game terrible, it just would've been better without them. It tries to be larger than its predecessor, there are more abilities, more weapons, more Orcs, yet it leaves you wanting less. But at its core, it's a fun experience with brilliant moments that provide fascinating insight into some of the untold stories of Middle-earth. I just wish it had known when to stop." -- Justin Haywald [Full review]

IGN -- 9.0/10

"Similar to the way Batman: Arkham City built on the foundation of Arkham Asylum, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is bigger and more ambitious in scope than Shadow of Mordor, with great results. The way it expands the Nemesis system with far greater variety and fortress sieges makes even better use of the stand-out generated characters, and its battles with memorable uruk captains remain challenging all the way through the campaign and into the clever asynchronous multiplayer beyond." -- Dan Stapleton [Full review]

Polygon -- 7.5/10

"If you can get past the microtransactions, Shadow Wars seems set to provide a much meatier extended playtime than Shadow of Mordor ever offered. But more than anything, that's my biggest disappointment with Middle-earth: Shadow of War: Everything about it seems to come with a caveat, some small annoyance or two that you need to dig past to get to the still-very-fun game underneath." -- Philip Kollar & Chris Plante [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.5/10

"Shadow of War fulfills the promise of its predecessor, completing a dark and violent lost tale set within the world of The Lord of the Rings. I was initially frustrated by the liberties that Monolith takes with this beloved fiction (which are plentiful), but I eventually abandoned myself to the insanity, and fell down the rabbit hole into a superb fantasy adventure. Monolith captures the thrill of power with aplomb; the way it simultaneously speaks of its dangers and corrupting potential is the real magic." -- Matt Miller [Full review]

Eurogamer -- No score

"Shadow of War ends up the very epitome of the difficult second album. A lot has been added in order to scale it up for a full blown sequel and much of it has been implemented with style and aplomb. As fun as the core is, however, it is often overshadowed by an onerous and self-indulgent story. What should be the game's crowning feature is instead reduced to an undeserved supporting role, like an exquisitely carved plinth groaning under the weight of a gaudy bronze bust of an elven wraith who's looking very, very serious indeed." -- Johnny Chiodini [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4.5/5

"For the most part, this is big spectacle and richly layered experience. The different regions are beautiful and varied to explore, while Sauron's forces are alway entertaining to meet and beat. If there are moments that don't quite click or things that fatigue a little it's because of that scale. There's almost an Assassin's Creed 2 feel of map spatter to all the markers for towers, collectables, bits and so on. I've not 100%-ed it but you’re easily looking at a triple figure time should you try. This isn't a game to get in for the weekend, it's something to buy and cancel plans for the year." -- Leon Hurley [Full review]

PC Gamer -- 73/100

"It all comes back to the orcs. They’re the reason I kept playing, even when I was losing interest in everything else. A motley, gruesome, ill-mannered crew of swines that are a constant joy to fight and befriend. And the increased variety and depth of the nemesis system makes for a much richer experience overall. I just wish the game wasn’t quite so overfed. A lot of developers think sequels need to be bigger and offer more to get people interested, but I’d prefer it if they were just better. Shadow of War is a great action game that feels like it’s yearning to break free from a prison of open world busywork." -- Andy Kelly [Full review]

US Gamer -- 4/5

"The Nemesis System is an illusion, but it's one I still enjoy. I legitimately enjoyed building my own orc army and stomping over someone else's fortress ... Despite all that, Shadow of War does stumble into a bit of a grind in the latter part of the game and the Chests system could be tuned much better. As it stands now, it's transparent in wanting you to open your wallet and buy a bit of Gold. Those issues are what keep Shadow of War from being an absolutely amazing game, instead of just a great one." -- Mike Williams [Full review]

Easy Allies -- 3.5/5

"Many of the best moments in Shadow of War come from elements returning from the first game, along with a few squabbles between Celebrimbor and Talion that begin to give them some identity. Otherwise, orcs always take center stage. The combat isn't terribly difficult, but it's a lot of fun to rip enemies apart. The story isn't very satisfying, but it's amusing to assemble a cast of murderous Captains. Shadow of War is a successful update to a smart formula, but it lacks enough depth and diversity to keep us enthralled." -- Brandon Jones [Full review]

Yeah, I'll be waiting a year until it's half off for the complete version on Steam, like last time. No way am I supporting DLC and microtransaction sleaze and cut content.

@Thanatos2k: In all fairness, the first game had DLC campaigns as well. The loot-boxes/microtransactions are new, but they are quite overblown and 100% unnecessary for the player to purchase. Everything that can be found in the game can be found in the game without purchasing a single microtransaction.

@CyberEarth: That's horse shit, they made it more time consuming to grind and instead offer you the option to purchase shit to unlock the content...

We used to have cheat codes if you couldn't wait to unlock shit.

@Thanatos2k: As I said - some people value time more than money. And others value money more than time. Here, you have the option to choose. If you don't like the idea of MT, don't use them. I never use MTs, and this game has nothing locked behind a single MT. Forget they are there.

@CyberEarth: I don't use them. However, I am punished by the grind being artificially lengthened to exploit people who value time over money.

@Thanatos2k: "Punished by the grind", also known as "playing the fucking game".

You complain about a completely optional route to content AND having to play the game in the same argument. Well done. I swear, most gamers enjoy whining about video games more than they enjoy playing them these days.

@jerusaelem: If you could get everything by playing the game normally, they adjust it so you don't, making it so you either have to grind extra (not fun for most people) or pay for the "convenience."

If everyone got things by playing the game normally, no one would buy microtransactions.

@Thanatos2k: Except it's not lengthened. Do you have any proof? Can you substantiate with any design of the game where grinding wasn't a factor? Look at the first game. You had to grind your in-game currency if you wanted additional powers. Same thing here.

Like I said (and I've actually PLAYED THE GAME), it feels about right. You can get enough currency in-game for 2-5 loot boxes an hour. But hey, form your opinions prior to playing it, k? Because that makes perfect sense.

@CyberEarth: Former Ubisoft devs have admitted they've done it in the past. I'll take that over a clear shill commenter. I do hope you're getting paid for all the damage control.

Gamespot reviews Shadow of War equal to No Mans Sky (7/10). ok...

Need half marks for a bit of nuance, Gamespot, 8/10 and 7/10 are such different assessments.

@sofajockey: Gamespot didn't get paid for Shadow review. NMS should have been a 4. NMS was literally missing features and an incomplete game.

Only justification I can see, when other games with MTs got lauded (like oh... Destiny 2).

@sofajockey: Removing half scores was a disaster for reviews on this site. Basically their scale is now:

10 - Amazing

9 - Great

8 - Good

7 - Mediocre

6 or less - Crap

It's a bad scale.

Overrated game with terrible combat mechanics.

Dragon's Dogma is out for the PS4 and XONE now. It's a much better game. Get that instead.

@cboye18: Finally someone who gets it. Combat is dull. Just spam the counter button and you're basically invincible. No skill required.

Happy that Assassins creed revamped the gameplay, could never get into any of the previous games bevause of the lame combat.

@crusadernights: Have you played this game? I have (mine came today).

So... yeah. It's much better than the 1st game in terms of combat.

You also can't "spam" the counter button. If you counter and miss the timing on it, you'll get hit.

@nibbin1191: Maybe based off the first game?

Personally, I enjoyed the first title, but didn't think it was mind-blowing or anything, (felt ass-creedy, but in Middle Earth).

That being said, I enjoyed the first enough that I'm still looking forward to playing the sequel.

Seems like this latest installment is getting generally favorable reaction from the critics. From the reviews I've read so far I don't think it has had the same impact on people's minds as its predecessor but that in no way is any indication that it is somehow poorly developed in comparison.

With that said I wonder if it will be swallowed up by the competition not only this month but for the rest of the year. Seems to me that many people are holding out for some of the other big name titles to come.

@videogameninja: I think competition might be Shadow Of War's biggest problem. At least that's big part of why I'm not buying it right away and the other is I'd prefer to start with a "complete edition" with all the DLC. Just this month in AAA games there's also Mario Odyssey (which some people will buy a Switch with), AC Origins, Wolfenstein 2, Evil Within 2, South Park, Forza 7, GT Sport, and the PC release of Destiny 2. That's a hell of a lot of $60 games that appeal to a lot of different audiences in one month.

In a month that packed a game that stirs up controversy for everything from microtransactions, to changing LoTRs canon, to possibly handling charity DLC in an unethical way has a pretty big hill to climb. By the way I'm not saying the way they handled that DLC definitely was unethical just acknowledging a lot of people do. I do think making it free was the best way to dig themselves out of that hole and they probably should've just done it in the first place.

@videogameninja: "From the reviews I've read so far I don't think it has had the same impact on people's minds as its predecessor"

Not surprising and is almost expected. The first game benefitted from low expectations. That's not to say the game was overrated but it took people by surprise as an actual game of the year candidate. Don't think there were many people anticipating that pre release. Looking back, outside of the Nemesis system, I'm not sure the game did anything extraordinary or new it just did most things well. For a licensed game that wasn't developed by a big time, well known developer that was an impressive feat in of itself (similar to Arkham Asylum).

With this sequel, the game is on everyone's radar and most are expecting an improvement in almost every area. The game won't get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to flaws and shortcomings.

Competition is big too. I haven't been able to get too excited for any game this fall because there are so many coming out. Not enough time or money for them all so I'm using a wait and see approach to see which one(s) I'll end up buying. I still have a backlog of games from earlier in the year as well as other games I've been waiting to buy (such as Horizon Zero Dawn).

@scottyp360: Couldn't have said it better myself. The first game benefited from the fact that no one had any real expectations going in. People were pleasantly surprised when those expectations (or lack thereof.) were completely blown away.

Hype/expectations are such a double sword not only in this industry but in many. While it can garner interest and swell people's anticipation it can also do the exact opposite, namely leaving people walking away from an otherwise impressive game saying "yeah, it was OK I guess.".

@videogameninja: 100% agree. Happens all the time. If something receives high praise there's bound to be people that are disappointed and feel it's overrated. The opposite happens as well. Something is labeled a bad or terrible but there will inevitably be others that find it's vastly underrated, maybe even going as far to suggest there is a conspiracy to intentionally trash the product.

The older I get the more I try to control my emotions and expectations with products (games, movies, music, etc). I'd rather have lower expectations and come out impressed than to have extremely high expectations and end up disappointed.

@scottyp360: videogameninja You guys pretty much nailed it. What made the first one great was the novelty of the Nemesis system. Now, with the competition, and lacking any real new innovation (besides a more bloated system), its a pass for me now. Holding out the Evil Within 2. I'm sure as a pure Survival-horror game it should excel- and its the season. Also- the combat in SOW is getting so stale. Its crazy how ones perception can change after playing superior combat systems (Souls-Borne games, Nioh, etc...). The new thing is based on more tactical combat- which is why I think BOTW and AC:Origins used such systems.
