Square Enix has announced Rise of the Tomb Raider will launch on PlayStation 4 on October 11 in a new 20 Year Celebration edition. This version of the game will feature "a completely new story chapter entitled Blood Ties."

In addition to this, it will have new co-op Endurance gameplay, PlayStation VR support for the new Blood Ties chapter, all previously released DLC, extra outfits, weapons, and Expedition Cards. A limited edition art book will also be included.

All this content will be available for free to Xbox One and PC to players that own the season pass. This, however, won't include VR support. The season pass will be updated to include this content going forward.

A season pass does not exist for PS4 as all the extra content is included in the new version of the game.

"[Crystal Dynamics] is celebrating with all Tomb Raider fans, thanking them for being on Lara's 20 year journey with us," said Scot Amos, co-head of the studio. "The team has packed in surprises, new story, and the top-requested special features into this 20 Year Celebration edition.

"Blood Ties, a new premium DLC, beckons players to explore Croft Manor in a new story mode; then defend it against a zombie invasion in Lara's Nightmare. When Lara's uncle contests ownership of the Manor, Lara must explore the estate to find proof that she is the rightful heir, or lose her birthright and father's secrets for good.

"Players can then test their zombie-killing skills in the replayable Lara's Nightmare mode: a haunted Croft Manor where players have new challenges and must rid the Manor of an evil presence."

According to a press release, the PlayStation VR support lets players "unlock the mysteries of Croft Manor in first-person, while the new co-op Endurance mode lets fans team-up in the wilderness.

"Two players must team up to survive the harsh elements by day, as well as lethal threats from enemies by night. Fire takes fuel, food restores health, and every resource must be hunted, collected, or crafted. Battle to the top of the leaderboards, as others try to beat your longest survival run."

To celebrate the history of Tomb Raider, a re-envisoned version of the cold-weather outfit and the Hailstorm pistol Lara used in Tomb Raider 3 will be available in the mode. A classic Lara card pack will let players play as various iterations of the character from over the years, including the original Lara model that started it all in 1996.

Finally, the game will have a new Extreme Survivor difficulty: "This new difficulty level takes the toughness of Survivor and ratchets it up several notches starting with all checkpoints being stripped out of the game. The only way to save the game is forage enough resources to light campfires."

Take a look at the infographic below to see everything included in the Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration release.

Ouch. The Xbox crowd must be pretty ticked that they paid $60 for the base game, plus another $30 for the Season Pass to get what the PS4 crowd is getting for $60 (apparently according to Amazon). I, for one, will be all over this, but I have to say that timed exclusives benefit NO ONE but the companies publishing the game........

@DETfaninATL: Nah, it was a rental. :D

And any X1 owner can get it for $20 right now. The dlc were crap so far anyway.

@spicymeatball27:

Lots of fanboy opinions there, and not a lot of fact. Return of the Tomb Raider may be very good, but The Last Of Us and Uncharted 4 are the best games ever made on any platform. Play them on a PS4 and educate yourself. Watching a gimped Youtube playthrough won't cut it vs the sharpness and fluidity of native 1080p running direct to your HD TV.

Been there, done that 12 months ago, does not work here because some of the features you have not had access to and the game will be running at a higher quality than you experienced. But you don't care do you :)

@justerthought: "the sharpness and fluidity of native 1080p running direct to your HD TV." did you actually just make that statement. Wow just wow.

The Xbox one version of Rise of the Tomb Raider was 1080p so you're not going to get a rez increase and you're unlikely to get 60 fps - so you might get a slightly more stable 30 fps on PS4, hardly earth shattering.

But yes The last of Us and Uncharted are fantastic games and look beautiful, but I'm not sure what that has to do with the quality of this game....

@justerthought: if those are the two best games ever on any platform then I need to find a new hobby. TLOU is definitely one of the GOATs, but U4 is not. It's not even the best Uncharted.

@justerthought:

How can you say that The last of us and UC4 are the best games ever made for console? Many people liked Tomb Raider more than UC4 to start with. And I love Red Dead Redemption over most games and most people agreed it is the best game in the last generation of console. So, they might be your favorite and that's ok, but speak for yourself.

@sladakrobot: Let me clarify for you because either your math is terrible or you misunderstood what I was saying: If you own an Xbox and bought this when it came out, (and assuming full retail price on everything) you paid $60. Then if you also bought the season pass, that's another $30 bringing your total purchase to $90. PS owners are getting all of that content and then some and only paying $60 and all they had to do was wait a year. Big whoop. If was an Xboxer and I had paid $90 for all the content only to find out that PS players were getting it for $60, I'd feel pretty taken advantage of.

@DETfaninATL: Why we got to play the game a year early? I don't get your logic here. If I buy Call of Duty on release day it'll be $60 (I'm from England but I'll attempt to use dollars), if I then buy the DLC it'll an extra $30. If I wait a year to buy the same Call of Duty I'll likely pay half the price for the base game $30 plus the DLC for another $30. So that's $60, how much is this game with all the DLC included.... $60, funny that.

@psychomantis47: Its just playing the same content that's available in all versions but doing it in first person instead of third person. Content wise you aren't missing out on anything with either version.

Actually its up to anyone whether to buy it on release or wait for it to drop. In any case, ps4 owners, it seems that square enix is making it up already for quite sometime by releasing exclusives to ps4 without receiving funds from sony. Dragonquest, world of final fantasy, nier automata, ff vii remake, i am setsuna. It seems square enix is trying its best to please you anyways. In the end, i hate exclusives whether xbox or sony if it is a third party title. Even spiderman should not be exclusives because its such a popular superheroes.

@Keitha313: Holidays, man.

But I'm with you. All it means is that people say "Well, don't have time for all of these at once," we wait on some of them, buy them discounted or used. Space 'em out, they may well get our sixty bucks per.

@playstationzone: Someone can't read since its available on all platforms, not to mention if you waited to grab it on Xbox, you can now buy the base game and season pass for significantly less then the new $60 edition and get exactly the same content.

@fedor: The first reboot was overrated as well. Too many changes made the game play less like a Tomb Raider game, with focus on exploration/platforming, and more similar to Uncharted (hollywood action scenes, QTE close combat, more focus on shooting and less on exploration/platforming). Lara's personality was drastically changed as well into this whiny, moody girl with little self-confidence or self-restraint. Oh, and apparently she has no acrobatic skills in this "origin" story either.

It was not a bad game perse but it definitely didn't feel like a proper "Tomb Raider" game and almost everything the reboot and sequel does, the Uncharted series does it better. A shame really, as the two franchises were previously quite different in gameplay perspective.

@oshishinobu: gotta give it credit - it was holding my hand a lot less than UC4. A lot more combat, too. Not nearly as much climbing, and no ledge clipping. The story, however, was nowhere near as good as UC 4 or even TR2013.
