Resident Evil Village Isn't Named Resident Evil 8, Capcom Says

Capcom has dropped the numerical numbering to try and shift focus to the sequel's setting.

Since its reveal, it hasn't been exactly clear whether to include numerals in Resident Evil Village's title. In a recent interview, developer Capcom said it omitted the number entirely from the title to focus in on the game's setting. This is certain to stop people from calling the game Resident Evil 8 anyway.

Speaking with Famitsu (translated by Kotaku), Resident Evil Village producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Peter Fabiano were asked why the game's title omits the roman numeral for eight that was featured in the trailer.

Now Playing: More Story And Gameplay Details For Resident Evil 8: Village

"You could call the actual Village another character in the game, and we did that because we would like players to understand that", the pair answered, before expressing their hope for players to abbreviate the game with "Village" and not "RE8".

That's a tough ask, given that Resident Evil Village is a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7 and the conclusion to its story. Village will once again star Ethan Winters, who just can't seem to escape the world he was introduced to in the previous game. It will also see series stalwart Chris Redfield return as the pair seek survival in a new spooky town filled with all sorts of monsters, including werewolves.

Resident Evil Village is slated to launch on Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC sometime in 2021. There have been annual Resident Evil games for the past three years now, with a remake of Resident Evil 3 launching earlier this year.

@jenilya: They never actually said that, though. These articles are misleading.

Q. Which is the official abbreviation for the game: RE8 or Village?

A. There isn’t really an official abbreviation, but we’d just be happy if you remembered Village.

@Deltath:
It's highlighted at the end of trailer in the name. If they don't want people calling it RE8 then they shouldn't be promoting it as such, or they need to fire their marketing team. The letters are highlighted in such a way to show the roman numeral 8. So, yes, they actually said that. I don't know why you are on everyone's comments defending them so feverently.

@jenilya: I don't understand how you aren't getting what I'm saying, but I'll try to explain it one more time.

Of course they call it Resident Evil 8 in the trailer. Obviously they show off and highlight the Roman numerals. I never, in ANY way, shape or form said ANYTHING to the contrary. No one in their right mind would be debating otherwise and it's hard to understand how you would think I was doing so.

What I have said over and over is that they have NEVER said that they don't want people to call it Resident Evil 8. They literally have never said that. They aren't trying to get people to not say it's Resident Evil 8. They're not attempting to say it isn't the 8th main entry. This is complete fiction. In an interview, they were discussing what the official abbreviation was for the game and they said there isn't one. There isn't ever an "official" abbreviation for games. That isn't a thing. Resident Evil 4 isn't "officially" called RE4. It's officially called Resident Evil 4.

Abbreviations are a matter of convenience. They're saying you can literally call it whatever abbreviation you want to. REV, REVIII, RE8V, whatever. No one is wrong if they say whatever they want. They then added that they hope gamers remember the word "village" in relation to the game, because it's important to the plot.

How Gamespot has mangled that into them insisting it is not Resident Evil 8 is a mystery. No one at Capcom is trying to convince you it's NOT Resident Evil 8.

OK, well your original reply seemed to imply that CAPCOM said it. You were referring to the article I see that now. You would have made much more sense if you said the article is wrong instead of "misleading", and then writing your Q/A bit right after it that contradicted what you said the sentence prior.

They're willing to backpedal on official marketing because the village counts as a character to them?

Man, some people put way too much weight on the story in video games, especially a series that has been deliberately cheesy from day one, and that's saying something coming from a writer.

@Barighm: I appreciate commitment to story, but it's just confusing to back pedal now when they clearly had the VIII in mind for the Village graphic and presented it no less.

Werewolves? Really? Is this game just a spin off of the main games or did Umbrella now create werewolves as well because why not?

@skyhighgam3r: A parasite vs a virus. You should check out some videos on Youtube about how there's parasites or even fungi that can control insects like ants. They make them climb up high on some tree branch where they're easy pickings for a bird so the parasite can move on to its new host. But yeah, this is nothing like creating werewolves after some fantasy stories. And even the bacteria in your gut affect your behavior and thinking a lot more than you might think.

@mogan: But not because there is a T-rex. Because of actual gameplay flaws. Only delusional RE fanboys get hung up on how stupid RE6 is while ignoring how stupid the rest of the franchise is.

@Barighm: RE in general has always been campy and cheesy, mixed with dread. But RE6 replaced the dread with action, and dialed up the camp and cheese x100. To date, it is the absolute worst RE game of the entire series, and it isn't even close.

A man turning into a t-rex does not make the game bad, but it is certainly a good example of how ridiculous they got with that game.

@Barighm: Yes, RE6 is very clearly terrible because the game design and the writing are bad; it being even dumber than most of the series doesn't help, but if that game was fun to play it might still be good. Unfortunately, despite hundreds of developers pouring millions of dollars worth of work into RE6, it just sucks top to bottom.

@Atzenkiller: Why would Umbrella create a virus or parasite that can turn people in zombies (also a fantasy trope)? Besides, you know the head werewolf will end up with tentacles and at least a couple giant eyeballs, just like every RE boss. Werewolves will probably be the first stage of some new virus that makes people beast-like and crazy, and then you'll find the underground lab, where all the more advanced stages of monster are. Honestly, I think werewolves will fit right in.

@Atzenkiller: It was originally a spin-off, Revelations 3 in fact, but then they liked the game so much they decided to make it a core title. Now they seem to have changed their mind again for some weird reason.

If you don't want people to call it eight, then don't put VIII in the frigging title. They did this to themselves.

Then they really need to change the game's description on the official website...

QUOTE: "The next generation of survival horror rises in the form of Resident Evil Village, the eighth major entry in the Resident Evil series."

Seriously, see for yourselves, that's the very first sentence of the official description on the website.

Also, that's really comforting... Shows just how much faith they have in the game.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: One member of the Japanese team literally was asked if there's an official abbreviation for the name and the guy said "no, there's no official abbreviation, but we hope players remember Village". That's it. That's the entire basis for several news outlets claiming it's not a numbered entry and Capcom is "insisting" it's not VIII. One site reported it this way and everyone is referencing that, rather than the original interview.

It's pretty clear with the information that's been floating around with this game and the "other" resident evil that's being worked on, that they can't decide which one is #8.

This actually isn't new for Resident Evil though. Code Veronica was being developed as Resident Evil 3, with "Resident Evil: Nemesis" being planned purely as an offshoot of Resident Evil 2. Which is pretty evident given the amount of asset and location re-use in that game.

Marketing though, and realizing they'd probably sell more PlayStation copies than Dreamcast made them change it.

If I'm not mistaken, there was rumors that the first RE8 being worked on got completley scrapped, and this was set to take it's place (Hence the "VIII" in the trailer) It's interesting that they'd walk that back AFTER it's announcement though... they must be pretty confident in what they have going for 8 now.

@Deltath: The trailer specifically highlighted "VIII" in the exact same fashion that 7 highlighted "VII". Now they are saying it's not number 8.

They flat out showed it as #8, and now they are saying it's not. If that's not walking it back, I don't know what is...

@skyhighgam3r: Somehow you're not getting this. In NO WAY, SHAPE or FORM did they ever say it's not 8. I'm telling you, the article is OBJECTIVELY and FACTUALLY wrong. They're misrepresenting a quote and talking a single line out of context from a single employee and then inaccurately stating what was said. No Capcom employee EVER insisted this wasn't Resident Evil 8. No Capcom employee said they prefer to call it Resident Evil Village and not to call it 8. They just said there isn't an official abbreviation. The guy was basically asking if he should abbreviate it as RE:V or RE8 or REV8 or whatever and they said there is no official way to do it. It's whatever the gamer prefers. That doesn't mean anything regarding whether or not it's the official 8th entry. That wasn't even a topic of discussion. It was never mentioned. It was never implied or insinuated. No one ever said anything even remotely of the sort. Technically, most games don't have "official abbreviations" anyway. That's rarely a thing. Fans argue over whether Xenoblade Chronicles 2, for instance, should be XBC2 or XC2 because there's no "official abbreviation".

If they were trying to say that, you'd be right. It would be walking it back. But no one is saying that except this terribly inaccurate Gamespot article and the source article they're copying.

@skyhighgam3r: Yeah, RE8 was originally this whole different thing, more like it was a very safe same-y type of game, but it was scrapped in favour of a formula that was supposed to be different. That's the game they're doing now, but they decided to make this game the "8" and that game...something else.

Anyway, this is pure marketing BS. The only reason they want there to be an RE8 this year is because they feel like there have been too many games since the last proper RE title, so they're looking for a reason to slap RE8 on ANY game that can be connected to the franchise.

@skyhighgam3r: It should also be noted that another leak also stated that Revelations 3 was being worked on and it would take place on a secluded European village but then it also got scrapped. Also if you think about it, RE:Village also fits Revelations III, as REV III.

@glez13: Revelations 3 was never scrapped. This game is it. Its actual code name in production this entire time was Revelations 3.

You might be right about them going back to the Rev3 designation. Maybe they didn't anticipate the amount of backlash they got for going all Van Helsing, so they're trying to change it back.
