Resident Evil 7 Has Sold More Than 5 Million Copies

The horror game has sold quite a few copies in the year since its release.

Resident Evil 7 launched in January 2017 to critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its atmosphere, appearance, and narrative. Over the past year, it's also done well commercially: Capcom revealed recently that the game has passed 5.1 million copies sold.

In a blog post about Resident Evil 7 winning Best VR Audio at the 2018 Game Audio Network Guild awards, Capcom also shared that the game has hit a pretty significant sales milestone. It's hit 5.1 million units sold across PS4, Xbox One, and PC; according to Steamspy, about 550,000 of those are on Steam.

Now Playing: Resident Evil 7 Video Review

These are very good numbers for the game, but it's worth noting that RE7 has currently sold fewer copies than any other mainline RE game besides Resident Evil 3, according to data compiled by the Resident Evil fan wiki. The previous installment in the series, Resident Evil 6, has sold close to 10 million units since its launch in 2012.

In other RE7 news, Capcom just recently released an update to the game that boosts its graphics on Xbox One X. It now can run at 4K and features HDR support. In addition, be sure to check out our Resident Kinevil video series.

Resident Evil 6 and some parts of RE5, really turned me against the series - I am glad I didn't pay for RE6 - I got a refund or I would not even bother looking at 7.

Now that 7 is pretty cheap, and alot of patches, $30 seems just right to jump back into this series. I wonder if I was the only one who saw the new release of RE7 and went, 'nah, I will just wait and see how well it reviews first'.

The first person kinda reminds me of my favorite series Fatal Frame........ whew. goosebumps.

I love RE 7, but I kinda felt it was short. I hope they make a much longer 1st-person shooter for RE 8.

@kachal: Horror games shouldn't be super long. Anything over 8 hours is too much.

Not perfect, but certainly the right direction to go in, closer to a real Resident Evil game than the awful (imo) action era. Still, 7 feels too much like Resident Evil "Lite" to me. For 8, they need to expand the environments, let us roam more and figure things out, like the legendary first 2 games. It will also need more enemy types, and much, MUCH better bosses than in 7. Honestly, the "chainsaw duel" with Jack is one of the worst bosses of the entire series. Seriously, wtf was that?!

@good_coop89: A change in pace that was absolutely necessary and one of the standout moments of the game.

It deserves it. It's one of the best horror games out there.

Resident Evil 7 was absolutely brilliant and deserves far better sales than that. 6 was absolutely terrible, it astounds me it could sell double the amount. But I guess a pure and honest horror game isn't going to appeal as much as a third person shooter.

@graffitiheart: It was good, but not brilliant. Thanks to the 2nd half mainly, which was boring. The ship especially was so awful, I just remember wanting it to end already.

The 1st half fantastic, but after the mom fight it just felt boring, the "zombies" were dumb, and poorly designed.

@inebriantia: Don't pay attention to graffitiheart, he enjoys trolling so much he can't even be bothered to make sense most of the time. I like his name, that's why I let slide his insubordination.

That said, I completely agree. The layout of the Old House is laughably simple and after returning to the main house and procuring the cards the game turns into an ultra deterministic First Person Shooter with awful controls. Inventory and resource management go completely ignored and the character switch ensures all player footprints are equalized for a significant portion of what's a short and non replayable game. By the time one reaches its awful ending, Resident Evil 7 becomes a disgrace on all accounts.

Edit: And don't get me started on the DLC! I get acid reflux just thinking about that. ?

@asnakeneverdies: The length is actually perfect for that style of game and I enjoyed both playthrough I did. The Zoe DLC is highly entertaining too (the others not so much).

@sirdan357: I'm not sure what style of game you're referring too, but this seventh iteration is on the longer side when compared to the classic titles, especially when considering the optional tapes. And it feels even longer due to exposition being delivered through hybrid interactive cutscenes.

I only point out that it's short because there's nothing substantial that can be improved upon, by a sensible player, during a second playthrough on account of how contrived and linear everything is. You'll experience exactly the same every time, outside of some digital setpiece having some flashy, but ultimately inconsequential, change.

By this point, I've completed the main game about six times across two platforms. Quite a lot more playtime if you factor in hours from partial playthroughs. You could say that I got my money's worth, in terms of wasted time, but I would rather have had my reasonable expectations met to a greater degree.

That said, I found the paid End of Zoe DLC to be the worst of the two, even if aesthetically more interesting than their free offering, Not A Hero. Edit: Added some stuff, and rearranged.

7 is good, not great. It took up the admirable task of doing something different but in the end didn’t do it well enough to justify its own existence.

And the gold edition? This game is the shortest RE game ever made.

At least those two DLCs and the last two with Zoe and Redfield can extend this game a little.

iv met a few people who thoght this game was VR only, and did not have a VR headset so did not play or buy it. idk how far spread that is but its the best RE since 4 IMO 5 and 6 where kinda meh, not bad games just not highly entertaining.

Meh, difference is that RE6 has been selling for 9,99$ for years pretty logical it sold more copies so far than a game that just had its 1st price drop a couple of months ago.

Give RE7 some time, now being 29.99$ it will still keep on rolling!

@silv3rst0rm: Even at $9.99 it's still really, really hard to believe it sold more then RE 7. Because I remebered a lot of people calling RE 6 utter trash when it came out (Especially this web site).

@illegal_peanut: The "sales" (which was mot likely worth a penny) coming from humble bundles and the likes must have helped...

Now that I think about it, that's exactly how I ended up getting RE6 along many other games for about 6$ for the whole package...

(If this counted as a RE6 sale then it's almost a scam...)

@aross2004: I'm worried it will stay in first person, but go back to the action format. So now we just have a first person zombie shooter.

@Barighm: I think it has branched off in different directions. Revelations 1 & 2 are 3rd Person perspective and I would guess the RE2 Remake will be in 3rd Person perspective as well.

Huh... I'd have thought they'd sell more by now. Maybe it's because there are so many people who don't want to give it a chance because it's "not Resident Evil enough", even though it's the most Resident Evil since the first game...

Mmm, some might have seen the first-person view and thought "not Resident Evil enough" though some might have been burned by the last game. The latter's understandable, I wouldn't say Capcom is consistent when it comes to quality.

@kstaggs3: I know it's a long shot but I'm reaaaaallllyy hoping we will all be surprised at this year's E3 with some kind of confirmation of RE2 remake. I think if that happened it would be a major talking point from this years festivities.

In regards to Resident evil 7 I'm glad it's doing well (even though it hasn't yet met the sales of previous entries.). There has probably been no other survival horror game that has captured the feel of the old resident evil games other than 7 (honorable mentions to Revelations and The Evil within 1 & 2.) and truthfully (as controversial as this sounds.) I wouldn't be opposed to the 8th Resident Evil title using a similar first person approach as it was done so well in 7.
