Resident Evil 4 Is Getting A VR Overhaul On Oculus Quest 2

It's not the long-rumored RE4 Remake, but we are getting a new virtual reality version of the action game classic.

Resident Evil 4 is coming back--but not the way you might have expected. The classic third-person action game is getting reworked for virtual reality, coming in as a first-person shooter for the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.

Capcom announced the new version of RE4 at its 25th Anniversary Resident Evil Showcase, where it gave a look at the gameplay we can expect when RE4 jumps to virtual reality. Where the original game was played from a third-person perspective, you'll take on the role of Leon in first-person, using the Quest 2's motion controls to do things like pick up and manipulate objects, aim and fire your gun, and slice through enemies with your combat knife.

Now Playing: Resident Evil Village Showcase (April 2021)

For the most part, the game looks pretty much the same--expect to fight through waves of its weapon-wielding Los Ganados enemies. You'll also have a little more versatility than Leon did in the third-person version of the game, with a gun in one hand and your knife in the other, which should give you some more options in a fight.

The showcase gave us a look at Resident Evil 4 in virtual reality, but it was a little thin on details about what to expect from the game. We do know when more information is coming, however: April 21. That's when Oculus, one of our best VR headset choices, is having its own Oculus Gaming Showcase, where it'll provide more looks at Resident Evil 4, as well as other upcoming Oculus Quest games.

Unfortunately, that's all the Resident Evil 4 news Capcom shared during the showcase event. There was no word of the much-rumored Resident Evil 4 Remake to follow up the successful Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes that Capcom released in the last few years. Some fans were hoping to hear more about RE4 during the 25th-anniversary showcase stream, but it looks like we'll be waiting a while longer, especially since Capcom has yet to even confirm an RE4 remake is in the works.

The Resident Evil Showcase was a wealth of information about the franchise. It dropped new details about Resident Evil Village, including a new trailer and details about upcoming demos, and the return of The Mercenaries mode when the game launches on May 7. It also gave a release window and new information about the upcoming Netflix animated series, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and teased a Resident Evil crossover event in Dead By Daylight.
