Red Dead Redemption 2's Release Date Updated On Xbox One And PS4

It's high noon.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 will launch on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on October 26, 2018. The announcement was made on the official Rockstar Games blog where the company apologised for a delay. The game was originally due out during Spring 2018, following an earlier delay from fall 2017. According to Rockstar, this new delay affords the studio extra time to improve the game.

"We are excited to announce that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released on October 26 2018," it said. "We apologize to everyone disappointed by this delay. While we had hoped to have the game out sooner, we require a little extra time for polish."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Red Dead Redemption 2 Delayed, New Release Date Confirmed For PS4 And Xbox One

It continued: "We sincerely thank you for your patience and hope that when you get to play the game, you will agree the wait will have been worth it. In the meantime, please check out these screenshots from the game. We look forward to sharing a lot more information with you in the coming weeks." Alongside the release date announcement, a selection of new screenshots have also been released, which you can check out below.

As previously detailed, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows protagonist Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang "as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive."

In May 2017, we got new screenshots showing off various environments, and prior to that, we got Redemption 2's first trailer. More recently, in September 2017, Rockstar released a second Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer teasing the game's story, combat, characters, and some notable moments from throughout.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to both PS4 and Xbox One; however there's no word on a PC version as of yet. The first Red Dead Redemption has not been released on PC, but Rockstar's last major release, Grand Theft Auto V, made its way to PC.

Interestingly, in December 2017, Grand Theft Auto V players discovered references to secret missions in an update that connects to Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar later sent GTA Online players an email in-game that provides a clue to help them pursue "rumors of a lost relic from the frontier." Completing this mission awarded players with a Double-Action Revolver for use in Red Dead Redemption 2.

One of the big questions surrounding Red Dead Redemption 2 is how the huge success of GTA Online will factor into it. Although Rockstar hasn't announced an online component to the game, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of the studio's parent company Take-Two, previously said to expect a "recurrent consumer spending" element to be included in most if not all of the company's games going forward. He left the exact form this model will take ambiguous, however.

"We've said that we aim to have recurrent consumer spending options for every title that we put out at this company," Zelnick said. "It may not always be an online model. It may not, probably won't always be, a virtual currency model, but there'll be some ability to engage on an ongoing basis with our titles after release across the board."

@cornbredx: The first one never got released on PC, so the "no PC announcement" doesn't really mean anything.

@cornbredx: or another 2 years like gta v. or not at all. it is becoming more uncommon for 3rd party games to skip pc, but rockstar is an uncommon company after all. if rockstar was keen on putting rdr2 on pc, wouldn't they have ported the first game by now?

@Xristophoros: They didn't release the last one in pc because the engine would have ran like shit just like gta4. Rdr2 will be on PC eventually.

@creepywelps: gta 4 ran like shit on all platforms... i had to stop playing it on ps3 due to the horrendous camera and unstable framerate. porting rdr to pc and optimizing it was possible -- they have all the resources in the world. they simply chose not to.

@Xristophoros: I remember the Xbox 360 being fine. But everyone knows developers didn't really know how the PS3 worked early on in its life cycle. Every multiplatform game was inferior for the first year or two.

@playstationzone: you shouldn't pre-order anyway.

Why bother? Just wait for it to come out, see if it's any good and THEN buy it. It's not like the game's going to be so rare you can't get it a week or two after launch.

“According to Rockstar, this third delay affords...”

Isn’t this only the second delay? Fall 2017 delayed to Spring 2018. Spring 2018 delayed to October 2018.

Was there an even earlier release window that got delayed to Fall 2017?

A delay on this game should have been expected. Not a biggie if we actually see it in 2018.

RDR is the most overrated Rockstar game ever made. Take as much time as you want, Rockstar. I'll wait. Hell, I'll wait long enough till RD2 is in the $20 bargain bin at Wal-Mart.

@ronaldmcreagan: @Xristophoros: To each their own but Red Dead Redemption was one of my favourite games from last generation.

I appreciated exploring it's world at my leisure, hunting animals, playing poker, treasure seeking via those maps you found, duels and the choice of being a villain or someone who upheld the law.

Sure, it wasnt perfect but it was held back by the hardware more than anything. As a starting point for a franchise Red Dead Revolver was lame but Redemption came along and improved on the original's formula in every way. I have no doubt that this will do the same again and will, most likely, have a map even greater than GTA V's.

@gotrekfabian: the moment to moment gameplay was sound, but the mission scenarios were recycled over and over again. everything became stale at the 10-15 hour mark. also, for a game that was so heavily driven by its plot, it fell flat in the story department as well. i was looking forward to a climactic battle between martson and williamson but it's like the writers forgot to finish the arc. after a long, drawn out chase sequence, i believe williamson fell off a ladder to his death? something along those lines. i don't remember because it was so forgettable. i do hope rockstar hired some competent writers from rdr2 and corrected this problem.

@Xristophoros: I don't remember any ladder death. The main story arc was Marston going after the gang members and then being offed himself at his ranch after he thought that it was over. His son, Jack, then took on the challenge of revenging his father's death and killed Edgar Ross (had to Google his name!) in a duel.

@Xristophoros: I felt that Dutch's suicide was a good way for him to die. Rather than a simple duel it was good to see him repent his sins even if it was merely due to him being cornered.

@ronaldmcreagan: i agree. no scratch that... gta 4 is the most overrated rockstar game bar none. that game was so bad i had to stop playing after just a few hours due to a horrible camera system and framerate and sheer boredom. as for rdr... it was overrated as well. the mechanics were good, but the game was very repetitive with its mission design. it took way too long to get going and the storytelling was completely forgettable with no payoff regarding the Bill Williamson story arc. there was no emotional impact whatsoever in what should have been the climactic showdown between them.

@Dragon_Nexus: Not necessarily. We gamers need to understand that if we want this industry to move forward, we need to support developers. And publishers. And that means paying them enough money to justify the investment in creating new games.

Don't be naïve. People will put their money where they see potential for return. That's me, and you, and share holders, and everybody else. $60 for a game is really not much at all. Actually, when you consider inflation, it's worth much less that when the Xbox 360 first came out. Modern AAA games cost a bloody fortune to be made. More and more with each console generation. And not all succeed. It's risky business to make things worse.

You see, EA stocks have just gone up amidst declarations of MTs coming back to BF2. I know this sounds like such an unimportant fact to us gamers, but there's a direct correlation between publishers stock prices and quality/quantity of games.

Dude, someone has to pay the bills. All of it. And make some money along the way.

@gfantini: And yet it's interesting that they never put out the information on exactly how much money it costs to make these games. We get told "It's, like...totes expensive, guys." and we believe it, but there's no hard proof to go along with that.

Not to mention, games aren't exactly $60 now. If you buy the base version of the game, sure, but there's always a deluxe version. and probably a premium version above that. And a season pass. And day-one DLC. And microtransactions. And loot boxes.

I just think that if it costs that much to make a product and ends up requiring it to sell ludicrous amounts just to break even...perhaps the way you're running the business is not sustainable?

Plus EA told its shareholders that the removal of microtransactions will have no impact on their bottom line, so they're maybe not as required as we're lead to believe.

@Dragon_Nexus: Dude… the number is $ 1.68 billion. Do your research:

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/57475/ea-earns-1-68-billion-microtransactions-fy2017/index.html

The industry will be sustainable while it is sustainable. That's exactly my point. You say that "perhaps the way you're running the business is not sustainable". Again, you make a point pro MTs. If selling a AAA game for $60 is not sustainable, then maybe microtransactions (if done right, of course) is the answer. Or one of the answers. You mentioned other ways yourself, like deluxe editions and DLC, but you sound like you're against them. What the hell is wrong with those either?

@gfantini: Or maybe design the game in such a way that it doesn't cost the Earth to make.

If McDonalds made this new hamburger that cost $10 to make but could only sell it for $5...maybe they should look at why the burger costs $10 to make instead of then charging $1 for each sauce packet you want and for every paper bag you use for takeout.

@Dragon_Nexus: "Or maybe design the game in such a way that it doesn't cost the Earth to make."

Right. The case in point here being Red Dead Redemption 2. Make it awesome, but make it cheap. Right... I see you have no clue at how the gaming industry works these days, do you?

So what's wrong with your hamburger analogy? Apart from the fact that it doesn't work so well for burgers as it does with games?

@gfantini: I strongly disagree. There have been plenty of AAA games that have some from startups. Big studios and big money are not necessary what drives quality and innovation. Over the history of gaming that has been mostly done by smaller companies and startups. Having a big publisher and and a big budget does not equal a good game. It's also time for the developers and publishers to continue to innovate and develop other revenue streams as well. Yes, modern games are a risky development, but publishers and developers need to continue to think outside of the box and not continue to try to hold on to conventional revenue models. I'm all for publishers and developers making their money, but there are moral ways to do it and immoral ways. At the end of the day the consumer will speak with their wallet. The market drives the stocks and not the other way around.

@bosay831: Bro, read again what you just wrote. You contradict yourself in all manners.

You position yourself strongly against MTs and suggest "other revenue streams". You go as far as saying developers and publishers should "not continue to try to hold on to conventional revenue models".

Man, what are MTs if not exactly what you suggest as a solution to the gaming industry?

You see, I said in my first post that there are good and bad ways to implement microtransactions. Yes, there are definitely immoral ways to use it, but we have no idea if this will be the case with RDR2. My initial point is simply this.

Look, there are great games out there from indies and startups, but there's NO WAY IN HELL we'll get a game near as close in scope as Red Dead Redemption if not from gigantic publishers such as Take 2. With VERY FEW exceptions.

Of course money doesn't guarantee quality. Nothing does. And yes, small companies can become big, but we'll only see games like Read Dead from them after they grow up. Not before. Again, with VERY FEW exceptions.

Now, how many AAA games comparable to RDR have come out of startups? Or been self funded? Or successfully kickstarted? And how many have been funded by big publishers? How many?
