Red Dead Redemption 2's Release Date Updated On Xbox One And PS4

It's high noon.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 will launch on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on October 26, 2018. The announcement was made on the official Rockstar Games blog where the company apologised for a delay. The game was originally due out during Spring 2018, following an earlier delay from fall 2017. According to Rockstar, this new delay affords the studio extra time to improve the game.

"We are excited to announce that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released on October 26 2018," it said. "We apologize to everyone disappointed by this delay. While we had hoped to have the game out sooner, we require a little extra time for polish."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Red Dead Redemption 2 Delayed, New Release Date Confirmed For PS4 And Xbox One

It continued: "We sincerely thank you for your patience and hope that when you get to play the game, you will agree the wait will have been worth it. In the meantime, please check out these screenshots from the game. We look forward to sharing a lot more information with you in the coming weeks." Alongside the release date announcement, a selection of new screenshots have also been released, which you can check out below.

As previously detailed, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows protagonist Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang "as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive."

In May 2017, we got new screenshots showing off various environments, and prior to that, we got Redemption 2's first trailer. More recently, in September 2017, Rockstar released a second Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer teasing the game's story, combat, characters, and some notable moments from throughout.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to both PS4 and Xbox One; however there's no word on a PC version as of yet. The first Red Dead Redemption has not been released on PC, but Rockstar's last major release, Grand Theft Auto V, made its way to PC.

Interestingly, in December 2017, Grand Theft Auto V players discovered references to secret missions in an update that connects to Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar later sent GTA Online players an email in-game that provides a clue to help them pursue "rumors of a lost relic from the frontier." Completing this mission awarded players with a Double-Action Revolver for use in Red Dead Redemption 2.

One of the big questions surrounding Red Dead Redemption 2 is how the huge success of GTA Online will factor into it. Although Rockstar hasn't announced an online component to the game, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of the studio's parent company Take-Two, previously said to expect a "recurrent consumer spending" element to be included in most if not all of the company's games going forward. He left the exact form this model will take ambiguous, however.

"We've said that we aim to have recurrent consumer spending options for every title that we put out at this company," Zelnick said. "It may not always be an online model. It may not, probably won't always be, a virtual currency model, but there'll be some ability to engage on an ongoing basis with our titles after release across the board."

@ericthegreat: "If you want to offer DLC cosmetic bundles or additional game content down the road that is fine."

NO THAT IS NOT FINE unless these cosmetic items can be unlocked in-game for FREE as well.

Gamers should never start settling for not having all skins available to unlock in-game for FREE.

@ericthegreat: You and the other Gamers taking a hardline? no-one has even mentioned pay to win yet .. most likely there will be some for of MTs if they have an RDR Online element .. but the base SP game will no doubt be a great experience! This Game is going to have record breaking sales! and I for one will be getting it day one (whenever that day one may be) not for the MTs as I choice not to buy those anyway so don't have an impact on my decision - but for the story I liked RDR and on that basis will support RDR2! and I know I have control .. I always have .. no one has ever told me what to buy .. I but what I want .. when I want :)

@ericthegreat: Then you'll probably be skipping this game. GTA V was immensely successful due to their continued online expansion and shark card purchases. There's no way they'll cut it. If you consider the shark cards pay to win, then most likely that'll do it for you.

I personally don't care about the shark cards, I just hope they balance the actual earnings from online activities a bit better. The old activities were never updated to keep up with the rising expenses for new stuff.

Pay to win on multiplayer wouldn't deter me from buying this game anyway. The single player story with be well worth the $60 fee, just like the first Red Dead.

Sharkcards are Pay to Win. Nothing to even consider. If you think otherwise you're just at a fan boy and part fo the problem with games today.

@yourefakenews: "If you think otherwise you're just at a fan boy and part fo the problem with games today" - No just no - stop speaking like a 5 year old - we all have a choice and each to their own .. no ones telling you what to do or buy so don't think you have the right to do the same to others! I play GTA and never have bought a shark card .. but I don't go around bashing those that do .. clearly we have a choice .. you and I choose not to buy .. other choose to buy .. it's their money .. their choice! I haven't worked my ass off for years for some 5 year old to tell me how to spend my money .. my wife does a good enough job of that anyway! The problem with Games and Gamers today is that they spend too much time bashing their peers and fellow gamers!

@yourefakenews: Owwwww, the dreaded fan boy insult. What a well thought out insult that no one else ever seems to use. Really though, I'm not 12, so that insult is a laugh at best.

Sure, Shark Cards are pay to win, but there are different levels of that in opinion. Either way, my point was to the original commenter was that if they have a problem with Shark Cards, then I'm sure they'll have a problem with whatever real world currency for game currency system is set up for Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar and Take-Two made way too much off of it not to implement a feature like that.

Regardless, I'll still buy Red Dead Redemption 2 because the single player story will be a masterpiece and well worth the cost of the game. Whether the multiplayer is worth playing or not doesn't even factor into the decision.

Oh, let me stoop to your level. If you can't admit Rockstar makes great games, then you're just a hater and the problem with games.

Whew, that felt generic and cringy, don't think I'll be throwing out generic cookie insults any time soon. I've had my fill after that.

Low expectations for that one. Just release it before Black Friday cause I'm not paying full price for this MT-fest.

October 26th, huh?

Just in time to sweep every major award show and put it fresh in people's minds to take home that GOTY award. Coincidence? Hmmm...

@xnshd: I'm not sure that's true. Rockstar wins awards because they sink years and over a hundred million into their games. While some people may not care for their type of games, the games they make are very unique to them and have amazing production value and stories to them.

@xnshd: So, I'm not sure if you are denying the quality of Rockstar's games or just continuing to drive home that awards are sometimes rigged. To me, while the latter may be true, Rockstar generally puts out games that deserve to win awards. So they wouldn't need to buy them.

That of course that is not the case for all studios and games that win.

@thelostscribe: im saying there is bias toward certain devs. rockstar being one naughty dog being another same with bethesda and nintendo. for example if gta v would have launched same year as the witcher 3, gta v would have won all the goty awards even though there is no argument witcher 3 is a better game.

im not saying games from the companies i just listed don't release good games but im saying they get more praise and accolades just because of who made them.

@Epak_: It also helps when there are no strong games released in the Fall slot to compete with the Spring slots. As a general rule of thumb, if there is a very strong Fall contender, it will typically beat the Spring contender.
2011: TESV (fall release). Beating out Portal 2, Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3, to name a few. A very strong year in gaming.
2012: The Walking Dead (released sporadically through the year). Beat out weak choices like Journey, Mass Effect 3 and Halo 4.
2013: GTAV (fall release). Beat out Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us, AC4: Black Flag. This was a very good year for games.

2014: Dragon Age: Inquisition (fall release). Beat out Destiny, Shadow of Mordor, Super Smash Bros Wii U. Meh year.

2015: Witcher 3 (spring release). Beat out weak choices like MGSV, Mario Maker and other crap released that year.

2016: Overwatch (spring release). Beat out weaker choices like Doom and Uncharted 4. Weak year for games but it's hard to go up against the kind of publicity that the "LoL Killer" was bringing in at the time either way.

2017: BOTW (spring release). Beat out PUBG, Mario Odyssey and Cuphead, among others. Okay year for games but no real strong contenders outside of BOTW.

All results gathered by averaging over 70 different video game awards ceremonies and selecting the most common titles. Also, in general, the fall and holiday seasons bring out the best sales numbers and yes, game developers/publishers do often put their games out on the fall slot for sales and awards. Although, games do sometimes have to be released earlier in the year due to stiff competition in the fall and because people need to get paid.

FU R*!

This is not ok.

RDR2's release date pushes every other game's back every time it's changed.

The last AAA games that showed this little before release turned out to be disasters. Why would RDR be any different?

@proceeder: they showed very little of gta v as well prior to launch. that is just the rockstar way of doing things. remember how bad "doom" (2016) was supposed to be due to a lack of marketing and promotion? also turned out great. i agree that usually a lack of promotion prior to launch is a sign of bad things to come and is due to a lack of confidence by the publisher. but there are exceptions to the rule. on the other hand, pretty well any EA game is marketed to hell and turns out a disappointment lol

@Xristophoros: Actually, EA didn't show much of ME Andromeda or NFS at all.

Doom was the 1 excuse Bethesda used for not releasing review copies and it backlashed, it's a rare case.

I just don't understand all this blind trust in R*.

If a company cannot truly predict the completion date of a project without months/years difference, it is inept.

So the question becomes: Are devs at R* inept? Or, are they dishonest?

Regardless, none of the cases makes them trustworthy. R*'s structure has changed drastically.

Okay, yeah, make the game the best it can be. But I'll be honest, I am getting frustrated with what seems like EVERY major title setting a release date and then just throwing it back by several months as soon as that date draws near.

Not to mention the ton of money they are making off of multi player transactions. Yep GTA V is the Golden Goose for Rockstar, they deserve it as one of the few AAA companies that still put out a decent product and care about gaming as much as making money.
