PS5 Price Point Will Be "Appealing" For Its Specs, Says Sony

There's still no word on exactly what it will cost, but Sony offers some reassurances.

Sony revealed more details on its upcoming next-gen PlayStation console the morning of October 8, including confirmation on its name, PlayStation 5, and some info on the fancy new PS5 controller. Here's everything we know about the upcoming PS5 so far.

Sony infamously announced the high price of the PlayStation 3 in a cavalier way, a move it looked to avoid with the PlayStation 4. Now that the company has begun to share the early details on PS5 well in advance of its release, the subject of cost is of course on people's minds. With no release date announced (and its launch not exactly being imminent), Sony isn't ready to share a price at this stage--although it is trying to assuage any concerns about cost in light of the advanced hardware it packs in.

Now Playing: PS5 Release Window & New Controller Announced - GS News Update

Those PS5 details were shared by Sony's Mark Cerny in an interview with Wired. What was published didn't cover price, Wired writer Peter Rubin did broach it during his discussion with Cerny, and he shared their exchange on Twitter. Naturally, Cerny was coy about saying too much about the topic, but he did tease the system will launch with an "appealing" price tag. "I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set," he said.

Of course, Cerny's response leaves a lot of wiggle room, and his comment about the console's "advanced feature set" suggests it won't be cheap, although we likely won't know just how much it'll cost until closer to launch. As for when that will be, Sony hasn't yet announced a release window for its next console. Last May, however, head of PlayStation John Kodera said the new system was three years off, so it presumably won't arrive until 2020 at the earliest.

In addition to confirming backwards compatibility, Cerny revealed that the PS5 will use an AMD chip with a CPU based on the third-generation Ryzen, as well as a custom version of Radeon's Navi graphics chips. The system is also said to support 8K and includes a customized solid-state drive for quicker load times.

Beyond that, Sony didn't share many other details about its upcoming console, and it's unclear when the company will reveal more information. For the first time since entering the gaming market, Sony is skipping this year's E3, so any more news about the system will likely be reserved for its PlayStation Experience event or new State of Play streams, assuming the company plans on revealing it this year.

So, four hundred and ninety nine US dollars, or five hundred and ninety nine US dollars? I bet they'll figure it out once they find out what Microsoft will be charging.

Well, if three years was said in 2018, wouldn't it be 2021, at the earliest?

i say around $400 to $500 u.s. dollar.

since it uses amd's tech, it'll be cheap and weaker than nvidia's.

The price will be appealing to me...in 2027 when I buy a PS5 at a reduced price and when all the GOTY editions for the good singleplayer exclusives are $20-$30 :D

The problem with the PS3's launch price was that it was late to the market and difficult for the developers to code for which didn't yield any differences between the cheaper Xbox 360 that launched first and had better looking 3rd party games. It wasn't until later in the life cycle of the PS3 that games started to really look superior. Additionally, $599 back in November 2006 was a lot of money, things were still recovering from the really bad market crash of 2001 - 2002.

If the economy continues to do well into 2020, if they launch the PS5 then, I think they can easily do $599 and the PS4 Pro kind of proves that point since people were willing to upgrade mid-cycle. I think they'll position the PS5 as cutting edge and will dual launch games for a couple years on the PS5 and PS4/Pro allowing for those that don't want to pay the premium to wait 2 years when the price comes down. It's all about value and the economy. I already spent $400 to place a 1 TB SSD in my PS4 Pro, so obviously my investment was $800, the fact that this is already included is fantastic.

If they have the specs and developer support, which they do, I think they can launch at $499 - $599...guessing maybe around $549 where they take a slight loss. Trust me though, if they can state that they have a more powerful system than Xbox's next console, then they'll have no problem selling. The Xbox One was less powerful than the PS4 and was more expensive due to the Konnect, we all know that was a losing strategy. One last point, they definitely can sell at $599 if they've found a way to do FULL backwards compatibility (PS1 - PS4) through emulation on the PS5 hardware, that would sell the system alone.

@Gatorjosh14: I think its always a poor idea to go over $500 for a game console. That is not a consumer friendly price, especially when the tech bells and whistles your throwing around will be foreign to most people.

I personally would pay between $600-$800. I actually don't mind paying more if it would mean more bumps in specs. I mean, we are already paying upward of $1000+ for a phone now and we really don't need a thousand dollars phone...

But that's just the 'lil ol' me

@Sepewrath: i mean, I did pay $1000 for launch X1 and X1X upgrade. Maybe if the launch hardware were more expensive and the specs were amazing from the get go, there would be less enticing to have a mid cycle hardware update?

Just a thought.

@tonyleo01: but you could literally build a multi purpose, gaming PC with great specs using that money. There has to be a line drawn, I would never be okay paying 800, I'm hoping for at most 500 bucks.

@gamerforlife96: Take out the higher end graphics(4K), Ray Tracing and some lighting techniques, slow(60+) the frame rates down and you get the same game just not looking as good.

You can, and you can even buy a more expensive one from the get-go, but the point is that with $600 you can't do much, you'll still have to invest more...

I won't pay for anything higher than $400...and how are they going to make a console twice as powerful as a PS4 for that price? And if it's not super powerful, then what is the point of buying one when PS4 exists? Are they going to pull some BS and just stop making PS4 games just to force users to buy a new console that's barely better than what they already have?

@vega2505: You guys clearly have no idea how development works. It's not always the company. Devs want to make cutting edge games too, you know, but they're not going to do it for a console that can barely manage it. We're already seeing games that can crash PS4's and X1's and push Pros and XX's to the max.

@vega2505: simple PS4 is 1.84 Tflops while Pro is 4.2 Tflops of power. It would be very easy for Sony to make the PS5 with 2x more power than ps4 and even pro. For $400. XB1X has 6Tflops PS5 will easily have 10Tflops for $400. But the SSD and memory is what will bring up the price some.

@Ravenlore_basic: What do these numbers even mean? It just sounds like DBZ power levels and means nothing to me. You might as well say the new consoles will have more googlymooglies than the previous ones.

@vega2505:

If it's going to be barely better than the current one, than it won't be too expensive. If it's going to be way better than the current one, then it will be more expensive. And them stopping the creation of games for the older console is pretty much a given, not straight from launch but in the next couple of years surely. No game company will keep producing for two consoles continuously...

@livedreamplay: millions of people agreed with you. And will do so again when PS5 launches.

PS3 which was a total screw up sold millions. PS5 will be faster less bottlenecks from memory and IO to SSD= less slow down and more fps, ray tracing so better graphics, and better audio...

For me I'm going to wait, but for millions of gamers this is what they wanted and Sony is giving it to them.

Sure PS4pro will play these games at 900p 30fps and less graphical fidelity but thats for people who are willing to wait.
