Project Scorpio Website Removes Mention Of VR, Microsoft Responds

Microsoft confirms Project Scorpio will offer "high-fidelity VR experiences."

[UPDATE] A Microsoft representative told GameSpot that Project Scorpio will offer "high-fidelity VR experiences," though the company did not say why the line was removed from the site.

"When Project Scorpio ships later this year it will be the most powerful console ever built with a 6 teraflop GPU to deliver true 4K gaming, high-fidelity VR experiences, and greater graphic fidelity. We have nothing additional to share at this time," the spokesperson said.

The original story is below.

The promotional website for Project Scorpio has apparently been changed to remove "hi-fidelity VR" from its list of bullet points, potentially suggesting Microsoft's plans for VR may have changed.

This change was spotted by people on NeoGAF recently. The live version of the Project Scorpio website contains the image below, which touts the release date (holiday 2017) and some of the console's technical details such as six teraflops of power, 320 GB memory, and 8 CPU cores. "The most powerful console ever, featuring six teraflops of graphical processing power, true 4K gaming, and compatibility with Xbox One games and accessories," a line on the page reads.

No Caption Provided

This cached version of the page shows that "hi-fidelity VR" was at one time featured on the page. It's not exactly clear when this was removed or why. GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details on the timeline and reasoning. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.

Virtual reality was among the features that Microsoft announced for Project Scorpio when it revealed the console at E3 2016. The removal of a line of text on the website doesn't necessarily mean Microsoft is abandoning its plans for virtual reality, but it does seem like something is going on.

In November of last year, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he thinks VR will eventually "find its spot" in gaming--but it might not be soon. "We designed Scorpio as a VR-capable console. Whether that happens this year, next year, or the year after…"

"I don't think the creators in the game space have yet found--well, they haven't obviously perfected the craft of building VR games," Spencer added. "It's so early; I think we're a couple of years before we'll really see that hit mainstream."

Project Scorpio, or whatever Microsoft decides to call it, launches this holiday. Microsoft has not announced a price point for the system but has repeatedly referred to it as the "most powerful console ever made," and will surely be priced above the Xbox One.

In other Project Scorpio news, details about the system's RAM have emerged, while Spencer said this week that the system is coming along great.

HEY EDITOR DUDE!

"320 GB/s memory bandwidth" is a completely different concept from 320 GB of memory. I doubt scorpio is going to rock 400 times a normal amount of system ram for even a decent PC.

@sellingthings: I've got 32 in my rig. 8 is mainstream average though, that's all I meant. I guess I did mean 40 though, finger must've slipped.

@bigrob007: Yeah; I laughed at that too.

Even if it was an achievable increment, it'd be a $5000 system. ;)

@Pyrosa: I mean, there's at least one server board out there that can handle ~2TB of ram.

Maybe they are trying to distance themselves from VR from a marketing perspective in order not to confuse people.

Also the mainstream isn't so hot on VR right now and depending on their partners, maybe they don't want to be dragged through some of the negativity around it right now.

I don't think VR will take off, even if the home consoles support it a lot of people may game but its really only gaming hobbyist that these product interest at the current price. With both ps4 pro and XB♏ supporting some form of a 4k experience it makes more sense it invest that $600-$800 for a VR head set in a 4kTV instead

Hmmm, wonder what this means? Are they cooking something up or did a deal fall through and working on another deal or what?

@Gamelore: No loss... read the update. You'll be able to use VR, if that's the platform you plan on using it on.

It'd probably be good to wait for MS's response before putting out an article insinuating the absence of VR on scorpio ;)

@joshrmeyer: Respectfully disagree, the fact that Microsoft removed the mention of VR is news by itself. The empty response is less meaningful.

@sellingthings: As i recollect at their last presentation around December, 5 other companies-partners of MS announced new VR headsets(HP and Dell are two that i remember). Kind of the next gen of VR tech and around 299 price tags. Might be one or several of them. Who knows....

@sellingthings: For vive owners, I'd hope so... besides the controller for oculus, does MS have any stake in that unit? If not, I could see them supporting both (doesnt vive require more power though? Does scorpio have enough for their games?) We'll wait and see for sure

@joshrmeyer: I'd speculate more on the side of a deal with Oculus than with Vive. There's no reason it couldn't handle the Vive on a hardware level.

@sladakrobot: It's a thing for a few gamers at the moment, there are 2 problems, motion sickness and bad games...

Right now they are making all kind of games on VR and most of them are bad. If we wait a few years, not only the technology will improve but there will be more quality games to play. I'm personally really interested in having the Vive but right now I don't have the space in my room so I'll wait to have a bigger apartment and maybe until then a better VR set will be released.

@sladakrobot: I haven't tried it yet, but how could it be a bad thing? Bad for your wallet I guess lol... I'm hoping they do more multimedia stuff for it... to me, that's just as interesting as playing a game with it.

@sladakrobot: From video reviewers, the only bad thing I've heard is possible motion sickness on certain games. All seem to praise it though. Like I said though, I haven't tried it. I can see what you mean, and I think it'll be a great feature for certain games (resident evil) and games that required exploring and lots of walking (like that ethan carter game)

The trend of over promising and under delivering is still going strong. Remember No Man's Sky? Now MS has removed "hi-fidelity VR" and next they will remove "True 4K". What's next? The powa of da cloud?

If this has been removed it's a major negative for the newest cutting-edge console from one of the big players in the industry.

Yet at 2:03 of the video on the web site, Todd Howard still says he is thrilled to have a console that can handle Fallout 4 VR. Anyway, I wouldn't blame them for not advertising or pushing VR. It is this gen's Move/Kinect. Its deadshyte.

@cainetao11: so, you believe the head of some game developper has more decision power about a console's feature than the console's company itself?
