LOS ANGELES--Although the PSP Go has proven less than popular, it could be argued Sony began a comeback of sorts at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo. At its press event last year, the company showed off some major exclusives, such as MAG and the award-winning--and top-rated--Uncharted 2. It also unveiled some sure-to-be fan favorites, including Team ICO's the Last Guardian, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Final Fantasy XIV. Then there was the not-so-small matter of the PlayStation 3's motion-control system, which emerged from the shadows via a tech demo.

Killzone 3 is likely to appear at Sony's E3 2010 press briefing.
Killzone 3 is likely to appear at Sony's E3 2010 press briefing.

Christened the PlayStation Move at this year's Game Developers Conference, the motion-control system will be a centerpiece of Sony's E3 2010 press briefing. Also likely in the cards will be a taste of the 3D gaming initiative, which the electronics giant launched this week, and a look at a highly anticipated upcoming 3D title, Killzone 3. Some of the wilder speculation in the gaming press also pegs a PSP 2 debut as being possible at the event, though Sony, having learned its lesson last year, is keeping mum on any surprises.

Come back Tuesday for a live blog of Sony's press briefing or watch a live video stream of it on GameSpot's E3 2010 event page.

[11:57] After being forced to enter the shrine auditorium a 1/2 the audience is suddenly being told the conference is starting.

[11:58] Cue thunderous montage showing Sony products and games.

[11:58] Little Big Planet 2, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, Peacer Walker.

[11:59] Heavy emphasis on Move--Kevin Butler clip makes not so subtle jab at Kinect.

[12:00] Enter SCEA president Jack Tretton, who walks out into a raised dais in the middle of the stage. He takes a jab at Microsoft's Cirque du Soleil performance, saying "don't worry I won't spit--you don't need any ponchos."

[12:01] Obligatory promotion of the PS3's feature set. Blu-ray, unrivaled gaming experiences, and "an expanding range of network services."

Sony's Jack Tretton takes the stage.
Sony's Jack Tretton takes the stage.

[12:04] He gives props to the PS3's multimedia functions.

[12:05] And then he introduces the big cheese, SCEA group president Kaz Hirai.

[12:05] He says that the next year will take "innovation and content to a whole new level."

[12:05] Says he wants to do for 3D what the PS3 did for Blu-ray.

[12:05] Promises 20 titles made for native 3D will be coming to PS3 by March 2011.

[12:05] Cue demo of KIllzone 3, which will be in native 3D.

The PS3 will have 20 native 3D titles by March 2011.
The PS3 will have 20 native 3D titles by March 2011.

[12:07] Guerrilla Games comes on stage to show the game off, and tells the audience to put on their 3D glasses.

[12:07] A Helghan helicopter releases troopers in jet packs, and an intense firefight ensues.

[12:08] One Helghan takes fire to his jetpack, causing it to fly out of control.

[12:08] More intense close-quarters combat, and one of the players steals a jetpack.

[12:09] He flies over a frozen wasteland, entering a derelict building.

[12:09] He searches and then flies over a ravine--I guess Killzone is a platformer now.

Some may call it a blurry camera; others would say it's the future.
Some may call it a blurry camera; others would say it's the future.

[12:10] The player uses the pack to rise above enemies' cover and deliver death from above.

[12:11] He also uses the pack to take cover on roofs and neutralize the enemies' height advantage.

[12:11] The jetpack trooper then helps a human dropship assault a raised position.

[12:12] Killzone 3 due out February 2011, only on PS3--and will be completely compatible with the PlayStation Move at launch.

[12:13] With SOCOM 4, that means there are now both a core third-person and first-person shooter in the works for the PlayStation Move.

[12:15] The Sly Collection will be in 3D--as will Grant Turismo 5, Shaun White Skateboaring, Tron Evolution, Crysis 2, and more.

[12:15] NBA 2K11, as well.

[12:16] Now one last 3D surprise…

[12:16] Montage of PS3 hardware.

[12:16] The new Mortal Kombat will also be in 3D, as will EyePet.

[12:17] MLB 10: The Show, Tumble--which appears new.

[12:17] Mortal Kombat shown off with graphic fatalities--definitely a hard M.

[12:18] Lights come up, Tretton comes out.

[12:19] Tretton dismisses talks of life cycles, saying its about the quality of immersive entertainment. Since it's the PS2's 10th anniversary, it gets its due. Nielsen says it's still the second-most played platform in the US.

[12:20] Since last year, there has been a big spike in PS3 sales as well. Yeah, a price drop will do that.

[12:20] PlayStation Move now up, which he says will be more realistic than other controllers.

Tron Evolution will be among Sony's 3D lineup.
Tron Evolution will be among Sony's 3D lineup.

[12:21] SCEA marketing head Peter Dille comes out to tout his wares.

[12:22] He said that the Move and 3D are proof that the PS3 is "future proof" since they are being introduced four years into its product cycle.

[12:22] He touts the Move's one-to-one tracking with the PS Eye and controller, which has three sensors built inside of it.

[12:23] Cue montage of Move's developers.

[12:24] Footage of scientists is intercut with Kevin Butler ads delivering thinly veiled jabs at Kinect.

[12:25] Sony finally has a good PS3 ad campaign, and they are playing it up. The LACC has a giant 50-foot poster of Butler plastered on the front.

[12:26] Dille says that the Blu-ray has so much capacity, they can often put two full versions of a game on one disc--the Move version and the regular version.

[12:26] Dille now promises to reveal some brand-new games.

[12:27] First game is called Sorcery, an all-new fantasy game designed just for the PlayStation Move.

[12:27] It will provide a "total sense of immersion."

[12:28] He pulls out a Move controller and navigation controller.

[12:28] The game is cartoonish fantasy, with a young sorcerer holding a wand in a dungeon.

[12:29] The demonstrator puts the game through its paces. Spells are cast by waving the move controller at the screen as though it were a wand.

Sorcery turns the Move into a real magic wand.
Sorcery turns the Move into a real magic wand.

[12:30] Spells are selected from a radial menu brought up by a button.

[12:30] Movement is controlled with the subcontroller.

[12:31] He prepares a spell to change him into a rat. The LED ball at the end of the controller changes colors to match the spell.

[12:31] He casts a whirlwind spell and sucks an enemy into a vortex by twhirling his wand in the air.

[12:31] He then combines it with a fire spell and creates a fire tornado.

[12:32] He casts an area effect spell by swinging his wand toward the ground.

[12:32] Demo ends.

[12:34] Dille promises that the move will revolutionize sports gaming as well. Cue the head of EA Sports development Andrew Wilson with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11.

[12:35] After calibrating the controller, he gets ready to take a swing. He said the controller can measure power and will be about one long motion "not just a flick of the wrist."

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is a natural for the Move.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is a natural for the Move.

[12:36] He hits a strong shot which goes into the sand trap. It looks like he's really swinging.

[12:36] Swings again--sand trap again.

[12:37] Third swing, he just misses the green.

[12:37] The onscreen action does indeed look like it is one-to-one in sync with the player.

[12:38] Fourth stroke, and it's in the hole. Where's Rodney Dangerfield to make a wisecrack?

Wilson's movement mimics that of a real golf stroke.
Wilson's movement mimics that of a real golf stroke.

[12:39] Tiger Woods will get Move compatibility via a PSN patch when the system launches this fall. It will also be on the "Move demo disc," which will presumably come with the system.

[12:41] Whoa, wait what--all new game, Heroes on the Move--which will feature Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper.

[12:41] Move will be promoted with the help of Coca-Cola, which will advertise the game.

Ratchet will be featured in Heroes on the Move.
Ratchet will be featured in Heroes on the Move.

[12:43] Out walks Kevin Butler--or more accurately the actor who plays him. He said he needs to get something off his chest and kicks Dille off stage.

[12:43] "So am I crazy or did I see 100 French acrobats prancing around the other night."

[12:44] "I think its time to focus on what's really important--the games." He pronounces his love for games with a series of wisecracks. "Gaming is about staying up to 3 a.m. to own a trophy that isn't real."

[12:45] "With PlayStation Move, your mom can make your mom jokes when she schools you at table tennis."

[12:46] "And we can all box with characters with important features like arms and necks." Laughter.

[12:47] Cue fake patriotic ad. "We all serve one master, one king. And his name is…GAMING. Forever may he reign!" Applause and laughter as Butler walks off.

Kevin Butler holds forth.

[12:48] Move launch details: EU Sept 15, NA Sept. 19, Japan Oct. 21.

[12:48] Controller is $50, navigation controller is $30

[12:50] PS3 bundle with console, Move, PS Eye will be $400. $100 bundle with Move, the PS Eye, and Sports Champions.

[12:50] RUSE, Singstar Dance, echochrome II, and EyePet will all support Move.

[12:50] Cue Move montage to--yes, seriously--Bust a Move.

[12:50] Also, those bundles will include the Sports Champions minigame compilation.

[12:51] Now they're mixing in "I like to move it move it"

[12:52] Montage shows TV superstars, SOCOM 4, and a Time Crisis game, amongst others.

[12:52] Montage ends, lights come out.

[12:55] Now its on to the PSP, with Tretton back on stage. He says the PSP is the only portable platform for the serious gamer.

[12:58] Tretton back out, and holds up Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker as an example of a great core game on PSP.

[12:58] After briefly mentioning the PSP-camera game Invizimals, a trailer for God of War: Ghost of Sparta unspools. Developed by Chains of Olympus shop Ready and Dawn, the game will be an origin story for Kratos.

[1:15] Now it's on to third-party support, with EA being called out as a big booster of all things PlayStation.

[1:22] He escapes the behemoth, only to face a still-huge creature in some ventilation shafts.

[1:38] Tretton comes out to show a dedicated Gran Turismo 5 trailer, saying "we are finally going to get our hands on Polyphony's masterpiece." He does not give a date.

[1:39] The trailer is indeed near-photorealistic, with the cars shining and skidding. If you like Top Gear, you will want this game. It even has a runway test course that looks like the celebrated auto show's.

[1:40] COMING NOVEMBER 2, 2010. Finally.

I wonder how much they paid the person that made the Playstation Move logo, seeing as how they put so much effort into it! The Wii, for me, is the clear winner this gaming generation, though admittedly I spend most of my gaming time playing PSOne classics on my PS3 I never had time for back in the day. I like the prospects of "Kinect" better than I do the Move, just because it seems like a somewhat fresh idea, rather than BLATANTLY copying someone else in their design. I love Sony, but they have made some rather odd, non-innovations this gaming season, and it's too bad, because as good as it is now, it could have been the best ever.

They keep saying the MOVE has buttons. Sony is uneducated as usual. Kinect can be used in conjunction with the regular 360 controller. M$ already said a controller could easily be added to Kinect in the future if a particular game really needed one.

Someone made a point a bout a Kinect costing 210 = 1 Game + Plus Unit. Ok.... Don't buy it. Besides 1 Move full kit is $80. 2 = $160. Add a game $60... Wait 2 moves +1 game = uuuhhhh oooooo that is $220. Please don't use price as a reason to be a lose. 90% of us purchased a console at launch. That means we either purchased a $799 PS3 or a $599 X360.... You really didn't care then, why moan and cry now. I know I waited a year. Before my purchase. I waited till Wii was $200 before I purchased it for my parents even though I knew it was a PS2 with Motion control. Let get back to the conference there are awesome games coming out and we are here focusing on a glowing ball on stick and no controller world. Kill Zone 3 bring on the cheers!!!!!!!

@ SuperYeti22 It's probably going to be just for party games. But then again, people will just consider the wii if it's cheaper.

I like the move, but I hate how it looks(And I'm not a fan of the price). That blue ball makes it look like a baby's rattle/d1ld0. But the functionallity looks promising. I'll be sure to check it out. Move, Wii-mote, Kinect, WHY DO COMPANIES GIVE MOTION CONTROLS STUPID NAMES?!?!!?!?

How would you play COD with Kinect, lol? To run, you have to run in place, to shoot, you use your finger like second grade,( kevin butler, lol). To turn left, you lean your body to the left. WHat if COD will have Kinect support and you have to do all those things. I would get more entertainment watching the player run in place than watching the game itself.

All of you whining about not being able to play normal games on the kinect just stfu. Just consider it as almost another system. It's not like its replacing the 360 and all games will be like fun little Wii games. You still have the 360 and all the good hardcore games will come out for that.

25% of Sony's event was ads and low impact videos. Twisted Metal 3 was the killer app. Move doesn't look worth $50-$100 if you already own a Wii. I can't accept that there will be many people who use their wallet to disagree with me.

@sleepnsurf O rly now? With no controller, how do you run? Duck for cover? And after football and I want to play a game, running in place isn't my idea of fun. How do you shoot when there's NO DAMN TRIGGER?! How do you reload? How do you aim? And the camera sees you, but it doesn't see what YOU see, it doesn't know wtf ur aiming at."Sony should be ashamed that they did not push the envelope with something more intuitive" You clearly wouldn't know what innovative means if it slapped you in the face. Innovation is when you improve on a technology that already exists. PSMove is a HUGE improvement on Wii-like remotes, and Kinect is a improvement over the PS cameras. I agree with @icekids here, you see, the move actually has these buttons for the important things here. Have fun flailing playing casual games on Kinect, while we PS3 gamers (the real gamers) play hardcore games (real games) on the PSMove! MUWAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

some the people who post on here are absolutely insane. they talk without knowing all the facts. lets get things straight starting with price. the kinect cost $150 bucks, add a game at $60 and your talking about $210. i just heard over on ign that move will support the duel shock controller so you don't need to buy the sub controller. so now if you get the $100 bundle all you need is additional move controllers.

Looks fun, but the contols and lack of full body movement via mapping, just makes the control system an upgrade of the Wii. The main focus for me would be the 3D and the immersion into the games. This will be the selling point. The problem is I wouldn't want to buy a 1st gen 3D TV when there are so many good non 3D bargains appearing. It will be a few years till I see how the market is, how it settles and then tech like this will be so much fun in 3D. For me it leaves the Kinect. Microsofts advertising has been a bit poor so far with very simplistic games, but the fitness programme that will be coming out really shows the full body mapping that the Kinect provides. With some creative developing we should hopefully see some amazing games coming out for it. I'll keep my eye on both as I really appreciate good innovation. Hopefully with these technologies we'll see some new gaming ideas rather than constant sequals and the growing trend of DLC to fill the void.

Not impressed whatsoever! Who wants to hold 2 maracas in your hands when you can have your hands free with kinect. This is an EPIC FAILURE. What kind of progression is this. It is just a flat out copy of the wii. Sony should be ashamed that they did not push the envelope with something more intuitive.

@ icekids I guess your question was how would I play Modern Warfare 3 on Kinect? I wouldn't. I think any game that has a controller would let the people using actual controllers have a huge advantage. I kind of take my hardcore gaming seriously since I run a gaming clan. Same thing for Move, you'll see how quickly people stop using Move for Killzone 3 when they go to play online and the controller lags and they get slapped around by people using a controller. Fact is these are casual devices, no matter how the companies try to dress them up. The media functions on Kinect just interest me more, the ability to control dashboards, movies, music, volume and media in general without a controller appeals to me. That's why I'd get it. Also as a hardcore gamer, I need a break sometimes from all the killing and trash talk. So party games or games where I can relax with friends, toss back a few brews and have a laugh playing some of the games we saw. I am not against Move, but I think they will need to offer something more interesting then they did, since I can already play better Wii games with the same style controller Sony has their work cut out for them. Microsoft on the other hand has some interesting tech and people will want to just try it out for themselves. I see them offering a slim 360 arcade/Kinect bundle for $100 less then the PS3/Move bundles so that will help things.

@Packgator Good point - the games for the PS are better than the ones showcased for the Kinect. I was just focusing on the technology. Hopefully better games will come in time...

I dont understand how $80+ Dollars for one controller is cheaper than one $150 camera that multiple people can use at once. Do the math people. The Move is a rip-off.

@The_crapgamer you said everything i would have said if i felt like typing all of that! but as far as getting anything like the move or kinect (natal sounded better in my opinion) i dont think i would since i have both a ps3 and 360 i think i would get the kinect since the majority of my friends are on live and i like forza 4. killzone 3 would be interesting on the move depending on how the controls are mapped... but we will see

@ icekids Bro what shows did you watch? Kinect was by far the device that picked up movement the most accurately. Move was a bit better then the Wii demo yesterday, but Move doesn't have the Games to pull off a straight up Nintendo ripoff. As for the types of gamers the companies are going after, I saw one hardcore game working on each, Killzone 3 on PS3 and Forza 4 with the Xbox 360. All the rest were party games. It's clear both companies went after casual gamers. I also would feel sorry for anyone using Move in an actual online game with lag and opponents using controllers. Controllers gonna win everytime. @ alexatkin I agree, the two games on the same disk seemed like overkill, it's not needed. I own a Wii as well and many of those games give you the option to either play the game with a controller or the motion controller. So it's just Sony trying to hype Blu Ray even more. The new Slim Xbox 360 (Currently sold out everywhere) is whisper quiet, They removed the duel fans and put in one whisper quiet one. As for installs, I agree, it was annoying on games like MGS4 when you play it and have to install every act and it takes like 5 minuets each, I would honestly rather switch out the disk.

@KBABZ Kinect for $150 with 4 player support. Move for $340 with 4 player support. Guess who won? Seriously, comparing any system purely on price is stupid. As for the "Blu-ray can hold both versions of the game", I call BS. The largest part of any game is its assets, which would be identical on both versions of the game. The major difference would be the game code which takes the least space, no way it needs all that space. Its infantile Sony are still playing the "every game needs a Blu-ray" game when its been proven time and time again that games which wont fit on DVD comfortably are a minority. I would much rather have an instant-on experience where you stick the game in and play it immediately, than be forced to sit through a painful install. Sure I love how the PS3 is quieter than the 360 thanks to not having to spin a DVD super fast, but the new 360 Slim may have fixed that too.

I think Sony had a decent conference with all their exclusive games and content, but I wasn't that impressed with move. Now it seems like their a bit behind Nintendo IMO Who knows maybe it will be better than Wii but I was more impressed with Sony's exclusives.

"Dille says that the Blu-ray has so much capacity, they can often put two full versions of a game on one disc--the Move version and the regular version." True now tell that to the greedy publishers who sell unlockables for DLC so that it remains true. I don't want to buy the next Super Hard Mode or Extra Ultimate Weapon for any game for an extra bucks that should had being in the game beforehand.

@amaan4ever, yes i think the starter pack comes with move controller and a sub controller and the ps3 eye cam. but you will need another move controller for some games. some use just one move, other you need a move plus the sub. and some you need 2 move controllers. if you want to have 2 players at your house that could be another 120 bucks. for 2 move controllers and a 20 dollar sub controller. plus each move controller uses 3 light bulbs. not sure if the move controller uses batteries or you just replace the bulbs but that could be a extra cost

The way I see it, the Wii uses a motion sensing remote. Kinect uses your body as a motion sensing remote along with some voice recognition software. Move actually puts you into the game along with a motion sensing remote. Even though I'm unlikely going to purchase either Kinect or Move, I can see the Move having a longer life. Aside from the Move, Sony's presser was just as good as Nintendo's. Kevin Butler stole the show, and Infamous 2 (along with Killzone 3 and GT5) look awesome. Great E3 all around.

I find it funny how people are saying that the Move is inexpensive. Are you all seeing the same information as me? Yes, the starter kit mat be $100, but what about the other 3 controller sets you'll need for your friends that cost $80 each. Though I am not sold yet on Move or Kinect, at least the Kinect will support 4 players right out of the box. On a side note, MS and Nintendo kept their presentation civil and focused on their own company, did Sony really have to take cheapshots at the competition? Seems like they know their motion control (with buttons for precision....made me laugh) is really nothing more than HD Wii style gaming. Also, I don't think having a smartass kid in your ads is the answer to increasing PsP sales.

Which piece is the "Navigaition Controller" exactly? @KBABZ... or if you already have a PSEye, it's only going to be $80! Nice work Sony, but what about cross game chat? It's not a big deal to me, but I know thousands of PS3 users would love to have it.

Well E3 was pretty much a failure. I was hoping to see information on ground breaking new games and instead we get Halo 7, Killzone 12 and LoZ 50. All the motion control stuff has promise but none of the games are overly interesting. Ultimately a yawner, an E3 made for casual 10 year old gamers.

Wow, now Sony is telling people to "bridge the gap between casuals and hardcores"? That's what Nintendo's been trying to tell people for years and NOW Sony is going to give into that philosophy? This is such a turning point. At least now Sony fanboys can understand since it's coming from someone they actually care about. I loved what Butler said about gaming. "We all serve one master, one king. And his name is…GAMING. Forever may he reign!". The days of ignorance and fanboyism could very well be over. And I love how gamespot didn't put a few more quotes from that section of the show. To me, those were the best parts of the conference.

Overall, amazing conference though. Biggest surprise for me was easily Gabe coming on the stage - it was a very akward appearence initially, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what 'Steamworks' integrated into PSN will be...
