Nvidia announces portable Android-powered console

New console dubbed "Project Shield" to stream games from PC, will be powered by Tegra 4 processor; company touts Nvidia Grid cloud-gaming platform.

Graphics card maker Nvidia got the ball rolling at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show by revealing a new portable gaming console/controller hybrid called "Project Shield."

The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.
The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.

The Android-based system runs games from Android's Google Play store and also allows users to stream games installed on their home PC for play on the Shield's screen. Games demonstrated during Nvidia's press conference included Hawken and the PC versions of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin's Creed III.

Project Shield is based on the company's recently announced Tegra 4 processor. It will have lithium batteries that last for 38 hours. In addition to an HDMI port, the system has a micro-SD slot, a micro-USB slot, and a headphone jack.

Attached to the controller itself is a five-inch, 1280x720-pixel HD multitouch screen that is based on a clamshell design. The system will also be able to output HD gameplay and video to a 4K TV screen. There is currently no word on "Project Shield's" price and release date.

Nvidia also pushed Nvidia Grid, a GPU that is specifically made for cloud computing and cloud gaming all across various PCs and smartphones, which was announced back in May of 2012. The card can push out about 240 Nvidia GPUs' worth of power, which is equivalent to about 700 Xbox 360s, according to Nvidia officials at the press conference. Currently, Nvidia's partners in conjunction with the card are Agawi, Cyber Cloud, Cloudunion, G-cluster, Ubitus and Playcast.

@Ladiesman17 Well since this is made by NVIDIA they're trying to allow it to be as compatible with their already built in PC market. I think it's a great idea and it certainly looks cool. But we'll have to see how it actually performs. I like it but I want to have one in my hands to play with before I can make a real judgement. Also it NEEDS to be cheaper than the Vita...NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

Looks clunky, but it sounds like a powerful piece of hardware. Any console that makes use of my Steam library is doing something right.

Well, I prefer the Vita. Playing PC games in a small screen? In case I want to play PS3 games in Vita, it's cool, considering many are even PS2 ports. But playing AC3 in a screen like that is not my thing. But will see if others like it.

@DiamondDM13 You can also stream PC games from your desktop to the TV and use this as the controller for Steam Big Picture.

@BestJinjo Well, I have an Alienware M14 in which I play PC games in, that I connect to the TV using HDMI. This is basically the same. It's even worse actually, because that controller looks horrible. My dear beloved PS3 controller. At least I can use it on my laptop.

@GamerMani I'd say you are American, just by that sentence.

Anyway, then why don't you tell me something in Apple and Google that's better than my current device?(Nokia N8)

Aside from faster connection speed, which is only natural since the N8 came out a couple years ago, it is expected for the iPhone that comes out every year to get improvements in the connection speed with every iteration.

@GamerMani And proud. Been using Nokias since the 3330, had about 10 different Nokias, never once had any problem ^^. And I'm not only, still only 21.

And aside from that, there is nothing special about iPhones, nothing that I don't have in my Nokias, why change?

@DiamondDM13 My point was that different devices exist because consumers have different priorities/needs. As you said, since you have a laptop, you do not feel that you need these other devices. Counter to your point is people who might have a smartphone + desktop PC and no gaming laptop.

Think about this: If you had a kid, you can get him a handheld console that also can stream PC games from my desktop PC to the living room TV. When I am not gaming on the PC, he can game in the living room. The desktop PC is not located in the living room. This devices bridges that gap.

I am not implying it will be successful per say, but the concept is interesting imo.

@BestJinjo Funny how you mentioned iPhone, I've got a Nokia N8 (Plus a N95 and N96), and I never once felt the need to get an iPhone. It just doesn't have anything special over my cellphone.

I also feel like tablets and mini tablets are just a waste of money, but that is because I've got a great cellphone and laptop, and I don't see why get anything in between them...

But people have they're own needs, so...

@DiamondDM13 Ya, I don't want to drag you into the technical mess discussion :) I agree with you that if you already have a gaming laptop, this device is not as attractive to you. It would be similar if someone who has an iPhone 5 and an iPad 4 saying that the 5.5 inch Samsung Note II is a redundant device. The way I see it is this handheld console bridges the gap between a desktop PC and a handheld console. It functions as both.

Titles will be playable through its own flip-up screen or streamed to a larger television or monitor with the help of a desktop powered PC. Project Shield also touts a micro-USB port for accessories, a microSD port and an HDMI video output port.

@BestJinjo I don't understand much of those GPU things. But I did forgot to mention, I play AC3 with all settings maxed except for Anti-Aliasing. Same for FC3. I play DX11 but there is one or 2 settings that I use in Normal, the rest is at Ultra. But I'm pretty sure AC3 runs at higher than 15 fps. I can't recall at the moment, but I believe the game has a setting for that. And I go with 60.

@DiamondDM13 The latest model of the M14x with a quad-core CPU, 1600x900 monitor and GT650M is $1330:

http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-m14x-r2/pd.aspx

That GPU only has 384 cores, 128-bit memory bus with only 80GB / sec bandwidth. To get playable performance on a 1080P HDTV in FC3, you need GTX660Ti with just 2xMSAA. That's not even maxing out the game:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/12/17/far_cry_3_video_card_performance_iq_review/5

GTX660Ti has 1344 CUDA cores. So how exactly are you maxing out FC3 on your 384 CUDA core GPU?

Assassin's Creed 3 gets just 15 fps at 1920x1080 VHQ on a GT650M.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Assassin-s-Creed-III-Benchmarked.84628.0.html

That's what I mean. A $1,300 laptop is crazy underpowered for modern games. That's why for a lot of PC gamers with desktops, the choice of going with a powerful desktop + a device that allows to stream PC games a TV in a separate room/floor is cheaper for gaming, and has way more performance.

@BestJinjo I don't know about that. It runs AC3 and Far Cry 3 at Max settings perfectly.

But yeah, that is true, not everyone buys high end laptops. But buying a Gaming PC plus this controller might come more expensive than just buying a PS4/720. And you don't have the inconvinience of the HDMI cable, which is my main problem with the laptop.

@DiamondDM13 Right but what about people who don't have gaming laptops but have a desktop gaming PC? I think the point is it's a portable console that doubles as a controller for streaming PC games from your desktop to your TV. For instance, my gaming desktop is on the 2nd floor of my house. I am not going to build a dedicated HTPC and get another $400-500 GPU in it just to have a PC to access my living room TV. Getting a laptop with HD7970GE / GTX680 level of performance will cost more than $2 grand. My desktop has 2 HD7970GEs. So really you are talking about a device that lets you access your desktop wirelessly and stream games to the TV in another room of your house and retains the full performance of a large desktop tower that most people don't want in their living room for aesthetics/inconvenience reasons. Your laptop is a good compromise, but it's not powerful enough for latest games, especially not Crysis 3, Metro LL, and so on coming out.

Kind of excited to see if this market picks up steam... gotta admit, the older I get the more silly I think Ive been being a stickler for tradition... I just want my games delivered in a cheap and easy way. I don't totally understand where its all going yet, but Im intrigued.

Wait, i didn't get this. Is this thing kinda like Wii U tab? Where you turn on the main PC/Console and you can play it elsewhere within its range? That wouldn't be so bad if i could play multiplayers game With 1 PC and 4 of this things....

@punu40 No it has a full fledged CPU and GPU on its own. So you can play Android games as a portable console. Also, you can stream PC games from your desktop directly to your TV using this device and play PC games on your living room TV. So it's not like Wii U GamePad since the actual controller is more powerful than PS Vita itself.

It's a quad-core A15 CPUs + 72 core Nvidia GPU inside that pad:

So it either plays the same games I can play on my phone, or instead of sitting at my PC playing a game on mouse/kybd, I can stream it via local wifi to a tiny screen and play on a gamepad across the room. Well, it's a no-sale to me :)

If that's their idea of a gaming pad then they ought to stick to graphics cards... the size of the original Xbox pad and the crappy thumbstick placement of the Dualshock... double fail.

@svaubel It's not a screen on a controller. It's like a more powerful PS Vita with a screen that also lets you stream PC games from your desktop. Unlike the Wii U, the controller is a console inside too with a quad-core CPU and a 72 core GPU.

I do not like the joystick placement but at the same time I guess it's they only way they could put it together to be able to close the screen. Make it identical to the 360 controller and you have yourself a customer.

Although specs look uber-great, I cannot say the same thing for the controller, however it can be fixed someway I guess. Its size also look like a problem becuase playing games via streaming started becoming popular on tablets and even cell phones as well. (Onlive had a good start but experienced difficulties afterwards) Just attach a controller and you are to ready go. In short concept looks nice but it needs some refinement before its release. That's my thought.
