The Nintendo Switch is also releasing without any video-streaming services such as Netflix or YouTube. As with the Virtual Console, those features could be released later.

In addition to confirming the Virtual Console news, Nintendo shared some additional insight about how the eShop will work on the Nintendo Switch. First, users will need to download a system update at launch to access it. "The system update downloads in the background, is designed to install quickly and doesn't disrupt gameplay," Nintendo said.

Additionally, the eShop will have a "news feature" that will inform people about "the latest additions to Nintendo eShop, as well as providing information about upcoming games and other updates from Nintendo."

Nintendo also clarified more about how users can share funds across Nintendo devices.

"People who already have funds in their accounts on other Nintendo devices can access them using a shared wallet that works on Nintendo Switch as well," Nintendo said. "Once they link their Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account and then their Nintendo Account to their Nintendo Switch system, this functionality becomes possible."

Finally, Nintendo said that people can buy digital Nintendo Switch games through Nintendo.com; the games will then download at home or on the go, provided there is a Wifi connection.

The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3.

Why would anyone buy this thing at launch? Why would Nintendo even bother to release this thing so soon when they clearly weren't prepared? Why not wait until late this year or early next year and come out the gate shooting? So many head-scratching questions...

@moose3469: my guess is that they rushed it because nobody was buying Wii U's anymore. It seems common sense to wait at least until the holiday season for more features and games.

@xolivierx: I feel like the Wii U wasn´t rushed, it was just a bad product... It may feel a little rushed due to it arriving on the market earlier than the competition, but it was fully realized in games and features, at least to a similar degree to Xbox One and PS4 on the respective launch dates.

The Wii on the other hand launched with a super weak lineup, so I guess that´s kind of similar. Hopefully the Switch will get as many awesome titles throughout its lifecycle as the Wii did!

@doctor_mg: the Wii felt like a last minute attempt for Nintendo not to disappear from the console scene. It's like they bundled a bunch of crap hardware and software at the last minute and tacked in ''motion controls'' just so people would not see what it really is. They could not compete console wise, it was just mirrors and smoke. The Wii was certainly not what Nintendo enthusiast were expecting.

Pretty much the same thing with the Wiiu. Same thing but in ''HD''. They both felt like lazy attempts not to be forgotten.

@chiefwiggum16: This, all signs point to an awesome piece of tech, with a Game of the year contender at launch. When has that EVER happened? (I'll answer for you, NEVER)

There are plenty of playable games here, and I would argue just as many as the ps4 and XB1 launch, but thats all subjective. Zelda, Setsuna, Shovel Knight, 1-2 Switch will be coming home with me, and I cant wait.

@chiefwiggum16: I guess that´s the target audience: People who don´t own a Wii U and are craving for the next Zelda. Everyone else should wait.

Well, that certainly makes me feel better about cancelling my preorder. The virtual console is my main reason for the newer Nintendo consoles anyway so I can just wait until they implement it.
