Nintendo Switch To Get Two New Models This Year - Report

Let the Nintendo E3 rumors begin.

Particularly when it comes to its handheld game systems, Nintendo has a long history of releasing revised models of its platform. Nintendo Switch will reportedly follow that trend later this year, when it's said to be getting multiplayer updated models.

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo will launch not one but two new Nintendo Switch models in 2019. One of these would feature improved hardware, while the other would be a pared-down version intended to sell at a cheaper price point.

Now Playing: Two New Nintendo Switch Models Reportedly Coming - GS News Update

One of these new Switch models will sport "enhanced" features, and it's designed for "avid" gamers. However, its specs won't match that of Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, WSJ said. The other system is described as a "cheaper option for casual gamers that Nintendo sees as a successor to its aging hand-held 3DS device..."

According to WSJ, Nintendo is planning to announce the new Switch consoles at E3 2019 in June, and then launch them "a few months later," in time for the holiday season. A Nintendo representative declined to comment when approached by WSJ.

A source explained to WSJ that the new consoles might not be what you expect. "You would be wrong to think the enhanced version is similar to what Sony did with PS4 Pro and the other is just a cheap alternative that looks very similar to some past hand-held machines, say, Sony's PlayStation Vita," the source said.

Intriguingly, the report goes on to claim that the lower-cost Switch model is doing away with things like controller vibration in an effort to cut costs. The report doesn't include any mention of price points for either console. The existing Switch is currently priced at $300 in the US.

And in another change, WSJ reports that Nintendo is working with Sharp on the displays for the new Switch models. The company reportedly bid to make the displays for the original Switch consoles but lost out.

As you may recall, WSJ was the first to initially report that Nintendo would release a new Switch revision in 2019. At the time, there was only talk about a single revision, and it was unclear exactly what form it would take. One thing that has remained consistent that this would be a mid-generation refresh that plays the same games, rather than a new generation of hardware.

Given E3 is now just a few months away, you can expect even more reports, rumours, and speculation about new hardware to continue to ramp up. And, perhaps not so coincidentally, Nintendo's share price has spiked since markets opened on Monday, following the report's release.

The Switch has been a big success for Nintendo. It sold more than 32 million consoles worldwide in under two years, which is more than double the lifetime sales figure of the Wii U.

Microsoft is also expected to announce new hardware at E3 2019, while Sony's rumored PlayStation 5 is likely set for a reveal at some point soon as well.

I was planning on buying a Switch soon, but now I'm not sure because I've heard a few rumors that the more powerful switch will be a dedicated console only, and won't have a portable option, and the cheaper switch will be portable only, with no TV output option. Looks like I'll just be getting the regular switch for now, and I guess I can always trade it in later if the more powerful switch supports both television display and portability.

Something like a more portable version of the switch would be great. I like my 2DS XL more because it fits in my pocket and is much easier to travel with, and the battery lasts longer. I'd love to see the newer Switch, however, replace the 2DS/3DS XL as a dedicated handheld and still play Switch or DS/3DS games. So, basically just a very high powered dedicated handheld console that is way more portable and compact than the current Switch pad. The 3DS is so freaking old it needs a dedicated replacement, and despite what people say, the Switch is NOT it. Two reasons why - 1. The Switch is not compact at all because it doesn't fold or anything, and the screen is too big. Also, the games library on Switch and 3DS are very different. Nintendo loves making the traditional Metroid, Mario, Castlevania, multiple Zelda games, Mega Man Zero, etc. games for their portable systems, which is something we never ever see on their main consoles. It takes years and years for just one main title franchise game to release per console, when their portable versions see 3, 4, or even 5 games in a life cycle.

It will be interesting to see what Nintendo announces at E3, which they should. There should be a few choices, including the original Switch if we're getting the very different new ones that I mentioned were rumored.

Do people still play the Switch? It has no good games other than Mario and Zelda, everything else has been Wii U ports or boring indie games. On top of that the battery dies after 2 hours, it's like the PS4 controller lol. The screen quality sucks and the controllers on the side are too small.... plus the most annoying thing of all, no bluetooth headphone support.

I was never impressed by the thing, it's another poor bit of hardware from Nintendo. What I want is Sony to make a Vita 2, but Nintendo to put their games on it, now that would be good!

@spo562: wow, i didn't think anyone could be seriously as stupid as you. if you were so well aware of it then why did you say xbox or ps4 when it clearly says ps4 pro and xbox one x in the article? sounds like you don't know your head from your ass. and since you can't understand basic english i'll just state that once again the article says ps4 pro and xbox one x, which you clearly didn't say at all, so go learn basic english please. nice try on your failed comeback! try harder, try again.

Love my Switch. however, If i cant transfer my saves for Dark Souls: Remastered or Skyrim(Have over 90 hours of gameplay in each game), i wont be upgrading. I play in handheld mode and my day one Switch has held up well. I also haven't noticed any issues with my battery yet.

This will be good for those who don't have a Switch yet.

I already have my home console with the XB1. If they want to shrink the Switch down to be Pocket Sized (about the size of a PS Vita, I'm thinking, I'd be completely okay with this and I think it would be the model I opt. I don't care about the whole docking thing, so the only thing they have to get right is the analog controls.

its specs won't match that of Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, WSJ said. Always got to be something with Nintendo. I am assuming that it will have to be stronger than the current Switch models. That would be ok, I guess. I still don't have one. If they had made Zelda for Switch only, I would have had to get one. I guess Nintendo VR is out of the question.

@zyxahn: Not necessarily. It will probably just have more bells and whistles, and more memory. Don't expect any new games to only be compatible with the newer version of the switch.

I like the idea of new Nintendo Switch revisions. The Switch Pro will help Nintendo survive when PS5 and Xbox 4 arrive. Hopefully Nintendo will go all with the Switch version for Avid gamers. $400.00 USD cram us much upgraded tech for this price point. While the version for casual gamers appears to be a more traditional Nintendo handheld system. But with a design that keeps the familiar Nintendo Switch form factor. This will be a huge hit in Japan. It would be cool if the return of a traditional Nintendo D pad returns for this model. $199.99

This should be an easy success for Nintendo and the current version of the Switch should quietly die out when the 9 generation of videogames commences. Nintendo finds success by not "Pulling a Nintnedo"

WSJ doesn't even mention a source.

Or anything to count on. ...and so we hope and speculate.

Nintendo usually ditches E3, so I hope they do something soon.

Will it even have the power of the original Xbox One is the real question... and why not make a version that is a bit more powerful and is a console and not a handheld for 250-300ish dollars. Oh well..

@texastitan123: Because the branding and value proposition of the Switch are play anywhere. There's no reason to confuse the market on this.

@megagood2345: Okay have that version that cost $150 more than it should for branding, but why not have console version for the folks that don't want to pay for hand held. Keep the same $300 price tag, but significantly boost its power. I am just talking about consumer option. Microsoft has it right when it comes to that at this point.

Nintendo's gaming handhelds will always sell well since they are the only ones in that market.

The only 'pared-down' version of a Switch that I'd buy would be one that didn't have any of that handheld bullsh*t. In other words, a Switch that doesn't switch. Just a console. But, sadly, that's never going to happen.

@thedarklinglord: I mean, that is the Switch already. I literally never take mine out of the dock, it is just a console for all intents and purposes for me. No one is making you use it handheld.

@Poodger: But how much could they shave off the price if they didn't have to include the LCD screen? While they're at it, they can keep the detachable Joycons, since I'd never use anything but a Pro controller, and they wouldn't need a separate dock if the system was built to just sit under and be directly connected to a TV. I'm still being asked to pay for handheld features that I have no interest in ever utilizing. I just want a decently priced box that will let me play the handful of Nintendo games that I can't play anywhere else. I can't bring myself to spend $300, plus another $60-70 for a Pro controller, just to play maybe half a dozen games.

bwa haha a "pro" version, I can see that coming, but an even cheaper option? really? how about an option without removable controllers or a dock.. oh wait, then it's just a Gameboy (and there could be a market for that, too!) lol

if they do, i rather have a "xl", like the overall size of the wii u's gamepad. if it's a upgraded dock, make it rival the ps5 sytem specs.

@fildosaggins: well, some hacking scene could use external hdd on the "switch" (dock/undock) so, i don't see why nintendo can do it, what i suggesting. either a update or make it new.

that for the current dock to read and output to 1080p, that's why the "switch" tablet have internal cooling fan inside when you dock it. the "switch" is like the shield tablet/k1, you can use a mini hdmi and choose mirror mode or console mode, but it heat up very quick, because it has no internal fan.

they would have to, if they want the next gen. game engine to work with. before you know, those game engine might support real time ray tracing. but this is nintendo, they hardly "1-up", sony and microsoft.

@Sound_Demon: it say here: "One of these new Switch models will sport "enhanced" features, and it's designed for "avid" gamers. However, its specs won't match that of Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, WSJ said."

i doubt the tegra x2 going to match the regular xbox one and ps4, nvidia probably need to make a tegra x5 or up just to close the gap on the original xbox one or ps4 for the "switch" pro, so by time it already to late.

there fore, a dock with laptop spec. with rtx 2080, 8-core cpu and a internal 1 tb harddrive (for 4k gaming asset) with at lease 16gb of ram with a hdmi 2.1 specs. would be their best bet to rival a ps5 or the next xbox system.

play the "switch" in handle held, look great, but on a 4k tv, you might noticed it a little bit, but when 8k tv become a main thing, it going to be like a play a wii in 480p mode on a 4k tv.

i don't mind if the dock does supersampling for non-pro enhance games like the ps4 pro and xbox one x does on a 1080p tv or have the system output 1080p on a 4k tv.

@Sound_Demon: no, it said the rumored new Switch would not rival the One X or the Pro. there's a difference. the new version could very well be more powerful than the current Switch. the Switch is using NVIDIA's Tegra X chips, and they already have Tegra X2 available.

but yes, the dock does little to boost anything.

If it's anything like what they did with the 3DS where they came out with a "new" version that certain games were only playable on it and not the standard 3DS, I'm gonna sell my current Switch and give Nintendo a giant f you. If it's just a standard upgrade like the Pro or X, then I'm fine with it.

@greaseman1985: Yeah, having exclusive games for an upgrade model is stupid. Even though it was only for two or three games on the 3DS it still wasn’t right.
