Nintendo Switch No Longer Getting Resident Evil Revelations' Physical Release In Europe

What a revelation.

Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil Revelations 2 are coming to Nintendo Switch on November 28, but it's only now we're learning the games will not be appearing on store shelves in Europe. Instead, the region will only receive the titles via the Eshop, with their physical versions remaining exclusive to North America.

Publisher Capcom indicated to GameSpot that releasing a boxed version of the games in Europe would not be viable. "Capcom has to take various factors into account when deciding what format to deliver our titles to our fans," reads a statement from the publisher. "These can include but are not limited to overall production costs, manufacturing times, distribution, and first party regulations. In the case of Resident Evil Revelations, we've found that unfortunately it's not viable for Capcom Europe to create a physical version of the title on Nintendo Switch for our territories, however we will be making this available as a digital release."

Even in North America, the games' boxed edition isn't quite complete. The cartridge contains Resident Evil Revelations, but you'll have to download Revelations 2 separately. That physical release costs $40 in the US. In the UK, you can grab the double pack from the Eshop for £40 or each game for £20 individually.

Resident Evil: Revelations originally debuted on 3DS back in 2012 and was subsequently ported to PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC the following year, before coming to PS4 and Xbox One earlier in 2017. The game stars popular Resident Evil protagonists Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, who are trapped aboard a derelict cruise ship infested with the zombie-like Ooze monsters. Its sequel was released as an episodic title for last gen, current gen, PS Vita, and PC in 2015 and takes place between the events of Resident Evil 5 and 6.

In other Resident Evil news, Capcom recently announced a definitive Gold Edition of the series' latest installment, Resident Evil 7. That package releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on December 12 and includes the base game along with its three DLC expansions: Banned Footage Vol. 1, Banned Footage Vol. 2, and the new End of Zoe. That day also marks the release of the delayed Not a Hero DLC, a free chapter that pits Chris Redfield against the "horrors that lurk underneath the Baker's mansion."

It's becoming worse and worse for those of us who prefer physical games. Even those of us in North America are getting an incomplete version of Revelations 1 & 2 if we buy physical.

Bad news all around. Not enough built-in storage capacity on stock Switches and Capcom having little faith in the long term viability of the EU Switch market. If purchasing an SD Card is required it'd be more 'Parent' friendly for Nintendo to bundle an SD Card that can hold a few games. 128GB should be standard.

@Hillsy_: Digital prices are more expensive in the UK than physical. If this got a physical release I'd say it would be £35 or £30.

I was not planning on buying this in the first place, but this is still a bad sign for the industry in my opinion. If it is indeed true when Capcom say "unfortunately it's not viable for Capcom Europe to create a physical version", this is suggesting that the digital only future may actually come around.

Before people resign themselves to fate and skip along into this dystopia, remember the current climate of microtranscations, loot boxes, poor servers, bad publishers, unfinished games. day 1 patches, drm and much more. In a future with no physical games these practices will only get a whole lot worse. The industry is already in a bad place because of these anti-consumer practices, and by taking away any form of resale, collectable, trade asset value of the product, they are free to screw you over with full blown "games as a service".

The day gaming moves fully digital is the day I will buy no more new games, especially not at full price. I already feel ripped off by nonsense like loot boxes and money grabbing publishers releasing buggy, unfinished games at £50 a go. But digital only for all games? Thankfully I have spent enough time in the world of business to know never to invest in something with no value in the real world.

@oceanvagrant: The only saving grace is indie games that directly oppose all the predatory business practices of AAA companies. No microtransactions or loot boxes, BUT only available digitally...

@oceanvagrant: I agree with you but there some people are just that naive, they don't believe those things. I see that all the time on reddit, facebook posts, and forums. They don't believe that microtransactions, digital download, and other things is killing slowly for us to have "choices" rather then "THIS IS ONLY OPTION". It is very sad

While I personally love getting my physical copies(as well as many out there.) I don't think something like this is going to necessarily sway those already interested in purchasing these titles away.

The fact that developers are saying things like "-In the case of Resident Evil Revelations, we've found that unfortunately it's not viable for Capcom Europe to create a physical version of the title on Nintendo Switch for our territories-" says a lot of where we are currently in the landscape of video gaming.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that in the future (at this rate the near future.) everything might only be offered digitally.

@Zero_Maniac: Nintendo, PS, and Xbox have diverged from corresponding generations. I suppose you can say Wii U, XboxOne, Ps4. Then Switch, XboxOne X, Ps4 Pro. Sorta a half step.
