New Star Wars Movie Solo Has Worst Opening Weekend In Recent Franchise History By Far

So low.

The newest Star Wars movie, Solo, opened this weekend--but it was not the hit that Disney and Lucasfilm would have wanted. The movie is tracking to make around $101 million in the US and Canada over this Memorial Day long weekend, according to Entertainment Weekly. That would put the film easily in the top spot, but it's well below what projections said it might make. Industry watchers said the film was expected to pull in between $130 million and $150 million for its opening.

Solo made an estimated $83.3 million in the Friday-Sunday period, which gives it the worst three-day opening weekend box office figure of any of the new Star Wars films by a very, very large margin. Here are the three-day domestic opening-weekend figures for the three previous new era Star Wars films.

Now Playing: Solo: A Star Wars Story Review - A Well-Crafted Side Story

  1. The Force Awakens ($248 million)
  2. Rogue One ($155.1 million)
  3. The Last Jedi ($220 million

Solo made around $65 million in the Friday-Sunday window from international markets--including China--which is not the greatest.

The record-holder for the four-day Memorial Day weekend is 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which made $139.8 million. Solo was projected to potentially dethrone that movie, but it came nowhere close to doing that.

Being a spinoff movie, Solo was never going to be able to make as much as The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi. But the comparisons to Rogue One are noteworthy, given that was a spinoff as well and it did considerably better.

According to EW, which supplied all of the box office figures, Solo cost around $250 million to produce. The budget likely incurred an extra cost beyond normal, as Disney fired directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord just 11 months before the movie came out. Oscar winner Ron Howard was later brought on to take over.

Solo is the first of the new Star Wars movies to not open in December, and it comes just five months after the release of The Last Jedi in December 2017.

Despite Solo's slow start, Disney is of course moving forward on more Star Wars movies. The next one is Episode IX in December 2019, while Disney is also reportedly planning standalone films for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lando Calrissian, and Boba Fett. Just recently, we learned that Logan director James Mangold may be directing the Boba Fett movie. Additionally, Disney hired the creators of Game of Thrones for a new Star Wars film series, while The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is making his own new trilogy of saga films after JJ Abrams' Episode IX next year.

Below you can see the full Top 10 box office report for the May 25-27 period in the US and Canada, as relayed by EW.

  1. Solo: A Star Wars Story — $83.3 million ($101 million four-day)
  2. Deadpool 2 — $42.7 million ($53.5 million four-day)
  3. Avengers: Infinity War — $16.5 million ($20.1 million four-day)
  4. Book Club — $9.5 million ($12 million four-day)
  5. Life of the Party — $5.1 million ($6.5 million four-day)
  6. Breaking In — $4.1 million
  7. Show Dogs — $3.1 million
  8. Overboard — $3 million
  9. A Quiet Place — $2.2 million
  10. RBG — $1.2 million

Wanna know why these new Star Wars movies SUCK (and by new, I'm going back to the JarJar Binks days and everything after)?! Because of their not-so-hidden political agenda and political correctness!! The reason Lando/Billy Dee Williams worked is because he fit the role of a smooth scoundrel who happened to be black! The reason Mace/Samuel L Jackson DIDN'T work as a black jedi is because he was jammed into the role for social reasons! He was a black guy who was a Jedi, and not a Jedi who happened to be black. Nevermind that I couldn't BUY into his role because of his previous work on Pulp Fiction and other racist remarks he's said in the past! That's the same reason JarJar Binks was a disaster! Because Lucas (and now Disney) felt they HAD to fill cultural gaps so that everyone felt included in the Star Wars universe. Just as the "Asian" aliens did. Just like Rey/Daisy Ridley did. Just like Finn/John Boyega did! These characters were/are FORCED upon us because Lucas/Disney felt they needed to convey a message of inclusivity in the universe! I mean, what's next? LGBTQWTF aliens? A lesbian female lead? Look, I don't mind inclusivity....but it has to appear genuine and natural. Not forced by some PC liberal bitch (with the last name Kennedy, what a shock!)! That's why the original Star Wars episodes worked (that, and they weren't released every year)!! We didn't look twice at Leah being a strong woman, because they balanced her character properly. Now you have 80lb females without training killing males three times their size, despite female Jedis never being part of the original concept. I'm seeing this in the videogames that are coming out too!

I'm tired of having politics and social issues forced into every goddamned thing I do/watch/see/read. etc. ! We go to movies and play video games to get AWAY from all this PC bullshit!

Solo mat not have had the greatest opening ever, but it was still a helluva lot better than the Last Jedi. I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

I don't give a shit that a bunch of annoying people didn't go see this movie. I'm going to see it just as soon as I can watch it in comfort at home. When you are sitting watching a movie do you really care that it didn't perform financially as some ding dongs in a boardroom wanted?

Alden Ehrenreich was extremely miscast in this role. He comes off as a soft wuss-bag rather than being sardonic and gritty. He may not look like Harrison, but that is not the point. He doesnt have the mannerisms at all

The reason this movie bombed is because the fans are speaking with their wallets. This isn't a disney issue, Marvel is run well, and Star wars isn't. The fans want Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy gone. They openly talk poorly about the fans and shove their political agendas right in our faces. And before anyone says that Marvel does the same thing too, You're right, marvel does address inclusivity and political agendas, but they're done in more subtle ways, and the movies are still dynamite.

@samrvdman: Since when is $101 million dollars a bomb. Thats just for the weekend. Plus the other Starwars movies usually open around Christmas dont they? A much better time to go to the theater than Memorial Day weekend. Inclusivity is a political agenda now? You need to get off the internet for a while. Go outside or something. Lol.

@externalpower43: I love ignorance. The amount for opening weekend, not 4 day is 83.3 million, Disney was expecting way more than that. So in the shareholders and investors eyes, it is a bomb. Sorry you don't understand that. 83.3 million for a movie that cost 250 million to make, that is part of a multi-billion dollar franchise that they bought won't cut it. Especially from a franchise as big as Star Wars. Disney expects higher sales. And i said inclusivity and political agendas, there was an "and" in between. Star Wars has always been diverse and inclusive. But when you have directors and the head of lucas film saying, "we don't need white people, and we don't need our male fanbase" and shoving politics in our face, you get these results. I love how someone with a differing opinion is out of shape and stays on the internet for too long. Keep being ignorant!

@samrvdman: Brother, I CAN'T agree more! I'm just glad I'm not the only one seeing this!! I absolutely REFUSE to see the last three movies they made (four with this one)! My impression is that they're trying to force their political ideals of gender equality down our throats! I'm sorry....but I don't want to see a stronger-than-a-man female, cast into every freaking movie!! Leah was tough but she wasn't about to go around fighting males and winning every time! It's just not realistic!! i'm seeing this EVERYWHERE I go. Spartacus (the 90lb waif and former slave Navea, was seen vanquishing well-trained gladiators three times her size!). Fear the Walking Dead (Madison, a 50yo 100lb housewife, appears to know everything about everything, from guns to military tactics, to explosive ordinance deployment, to weapons management, to taking down men twice her size), and the list just keeps on going!!! I'm sorry, but it's utter bullshit!!!

@AloeVera4: That's definitely part of it, but it's not the biggest issue. Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy are not qualified to be running this franchise. And i especially don't want their twisted views being forced down my throat. I don't care if the main character is a woman, i care if she's a Mary Sue, which Rey is. I care that Rian Johnson wrote a fucking terrible script with multiple plot holes, poor character progression, and just anticlimactic answers. I care that Rian Johnson said ridiculous comments like, we don't need more white people directing or calling Mark Hamill a "motherfucker". I don't care who is directing, but they should be the most qualified. I don't want to hear kathleen Kennedy saying, we don't care about our male fanbase, which is like half of their fanbase. I also dont want to hear how Lando is now a Pansexual and is banging a robot lol. These 2 videos below explain it pretty well.

@samrvdman: So Disney should direct their movies to your particular liking's? If there are millions of civilizations in the universe they most defiantly would be incredibly diverse. I think it would be ridiculous and boring if every alien in the galaxy was a hetero douche bros.

@externalpower43: It's ridiculous how many ignorant comments you can make, just when i thought you couldn't out due yourself. It is their movie, and they can do what they want, but I doubt Disney wants their 4 billion dollar cash cow to go down the toilet because of poor management. You must be calling it 'Merican Sniper cause you think i'm some dumb hick, but the only one making dumb and ignorant comments is you. Disney has dwindled their Star Wars fan base because of poor management by Kathleen Kennedy, poor direction and writing by Rian Johnson, and forcibly inserting politics. They alienated their fans with how awful TLJ was, it lacked focus, direction, and character progression; it was a huge misstep to say the least. Then they told their male fanbase to screw off. Then they said they don't need anymore white people. If you're a man, they've insulted you, if you're white, they've insulted you, if you disagree with their politics, they've insulted you, if you disagree with their views about sexuality, they've insulted, and finally, and most importantly, if you disagree with how they've written an unfocused narrative, rather than writing all 3 scripts at once, and have tarnished the old characters, while writing new, boring, and undeveloped characters, then they've insulted the fanbase as well. Probably, not the best way to treat the fanbase, especially if their the one's buying merchandise and paying to see the movie. You make it sound like i'm some ultra-conservative, all i'm saying is respect the material and the fanbase, don't shove politics or personal agendas into the film, and focus on writing the best, coherent scripts, with properly developed characters and plot lines....

I'm sure people will pounce on TLJ because everyone loves to complain 24/7 about that movie 5+ months later, but there's other factors that contributed more to this. Weird release schedule for one, I'm still kinda surprised they released it in May instead of December. Then you had blockbusters like Deadpool 2 and Infinity War looming around where usually Star Wars films have little competition. Then there's also production issues and pretty lackluster marketing.

It's a shame, Solo was actually pretty good.

Heh... Nice to see the fans are reacting as they should to The Last Jedi.... Wasn't sure how many of the people talking about boycuts were actually gonna stay true to it.

It's kinda funny though how GameSpot conveniently forgets to mention the huge fan backlash to The Last Jedi, and how that could have A LOT to do with why SOLO is bombing... and how they've in general refused to acknowledge the existence of the backlash and only writes positive things about it... How they're ignored the pettiness of the big guys surrounding the movies (Rian Johnson, JJ Abrams and the antichrist of Star Wars herself, Kathleen Kennedy)

I like GameSpot, and it is my go-to site for nerd-news... but holy **** they have seemed like paid-to-be-positive kind of people.

I've still not seen a single The Last Jedi article where comments haven't been turned off, for unfathomable reasons :P I might have missed some, but I haven't seen any

I knew as soon as Disney acquired the right to the Star Wars franchise that they would run it into the ground by constantly releasing films. Star Wars fans aren't used to getting this many releases so often and I don't think they want them either.

@phillybro806: This is not a Disney problem. If it was, Marvel would be having the same issues, but they don't. The truth of the matter is that Lucasfilm is run poorly. Kathleen Kennedy and her stooge, Rian Johnson, need to go. They have no direction for any of these movies, why would you write the scripts as you go along? There's no sense of direction or plot line, which leads to anticlimactic answers and poor character development and progression.

@phillybro806: I wouldn't be so quick to blame Disney, the rest of their franchises are ran very well. Disney isn't the one writing these stories or directing these movies. They just fund them, and then rake in the money they earn. They have no creative say in the actual product.

@P00DGE: No creative say?? Bob Iger can hire and fire ANYONE at Lucasfilm anytime he wants. Disney has complete creative control of the product. Everything that is happening to Star Wars can be squarely laid at the feet of Disney proper.

@Rufus_the_rat: Disney is rather hands off when it comes to this stuff. They generally do have pretty good quality control, but things can get by. Disney might have the power to hire and fire, but they aren't dictating plot and direction. Lucasfilm is still largely responsible for everything. You can lay the blame at Disney's feet for not stepping in and fixing things, but they are not the ones that dictated the horrible choices, they just let it by without forcing them to fix it. Overall, for almost all of Disney's other franchises, they have been well handled and nurtured. Disney is usually very caring for their properties, and have good quality control. I am really hoping they step in and take MORE of an active role in Lucasfilm moving forward.

@phillybro806: That unfortunatly not our biggest issue...

If we got quality Star Wars, more Star Wars would be welcome to anyone I imagine... the problem is that it's flat character in a flat story wrapped up in unwanted social justice pushing themes...

It's not Disney we're to blame (mainly anyway), it's Lucas Film and Kathleen Kennedy.... of course Disney should have quality checked their movies before giving them the go... but it's mostly not their fault at all

@Rufus_the_rat: I know... but they're still a "separate company"... Disney has appointed a leader (who is unfortunately Kathleen Kennedy) and they kinda of expect her to be able to run it herself...

That's usually how these things work, otherwise they would VERY likely have closed Lucas Film and just made Star Wars under the Disney name.

It's partly Disney's fault for not quality checking their stuff... but it's completely normal to acquire a company and more or less let them run themselves

I'm kind of getting Star Wars fatigue. I mean we used to go years without anything Star Wars. Now we can't go months without an animated TV show or some other spin off coming out as well as the main franchise. It wasn't much fun watching all m favorite characters I grew up with die off one by one - especially the stupid way some of them died. Has to be one of the most pointless deaths in cinematic history for such an iconic character. Then you have Rogue One where the entire cast dies. Yeah, that gave me warm, fuzzy feelings. I still enjoy them but, dial it down a notch. My son saw the Last Jedi before I did and when I asked him how it was he said, "It was different. That's about all I can say." That didn't inspire confidence.

Star War movies made today have an hard time matching the hoopla of the first Star War movie even if the movie effects are superior to the first one. Each one made gets duller and duller because it does not move forward with new ideas. I like Solo but I am not interested in his story very much. At least move away from the original characters and give some others the spotlight like Admiral Thrawn and his role after Darth Vader's death.

Many moons ago I came to the realization that being a hardcore fan of franchises be it marvel, starwars or any other numerous series' that come out and expecting amazing things every time was setting my expectations too high. When it comes to things like superhero movies for example, I have been a major fan for a long time since comic books, cartoons and so on, but when they make a movie its story deviates, things aren't done how I would want them, so now I just go in treating movies as just a sci-fi movie, or action movie or what have you.

Too many franchises are trying to be milked way too long, and some fresh new things would be nice. Unfortunately when someone tries to make something new the vast majority of the time it instantly gets compared to older more established franchises and essentially being put down because its not the same. Damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of situation.

@mattock1987: But he isn't wrong. I mean, I'm not a fan at all. I go see the Star Wars movies in theaters because they are usually fun, but I am not at all a Star Wars FAN, more of a movie fan in general. And I hated TLJ. I was a garbage excuse for a movie, period.

I'm interested in the Bobafett movie. I'm hoping to see Vader and Fett working together, maybe including others bounty hunters such as Bossk, IG88, Dengar etc... Also, some kind of Lightsaber duel. Will wait and see.
