New Mass Effect Books Will Bridge Gap Between Trilogy and Andromeda

"They will focus on key characters and answer the many questions fans have been asking."

What happened after the main Mass Effect trilogy and before next year's Mass Effect Andromeda? This will be covered in a new series of novels from Titan Books.

"The novels will act as prequel and sequels to the events in the games and will become part of the overarching Mass Effect saga," reads a line from their description [PDF] (via Eurogamer). "They will focus on key characters and answer the many questions fans have been asking."

No Caption Provided

There will be four new Mass Effect novels in all. The first one, titled Mass Effect Andromeda: Initation (August 2016) is being written by N. K. Jemisin, while Mass Effect series writer Mac Walters will pen the last one, which does not yet have a title but is slated for March 2018.

There is no word yet on who is writing installments No. 2 and 3, but release dates of March 2017 and September 2017 are listed for them.

Andromeda the game was originally scheduled to come out in 2016, but in May, BioWare announced that the game is now coming in "early 2017." The game was delayed "to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be," BioWare said at the time.

No thanx, I remember the shit that happened with "Deception", BW claimed that they would re-work it, but they never did.

Sick of having to read books for video game story lines.

none of the other books "Revelation, Ascension & Retribution" offered anything that were ground breaking & extremely important to the games anyways, I doubt they'll do it here.

I've read all the Mass Effect and Dragon Age books so far, and I'd be very surprised if anything important is revealed in the books that isn't also revealed in the next game. So you don't HAVE to read the books to understand what happens between the series. I'm sure you'll be beat over the head with that in-game. Usually, the books revolve around marginal (non-player) characters and provide some background and non-essential world building.

have they mentioned what the canon is? It is pretty obvious that it isn't the green explosion ending though...

@fulcrvm: If you have any belief in the indoctrination theory, then the ending would make more sense as far as affecting everyone's starting game headed into Andromeda. If the indoctrination theory holds up, then the true ending is with the old man or woman and the child at the very end of the game, reapers have been defeated with or without your Shepard and most of the species from ME1-3 have survived the outcome.

@fulcrvm: I don't think the aftermath of the reapers will affect Andromeda galaxy. And the pathfinders left Earth when Shepard was in confinement on Earth prior to reaper invasion. So for a ship traveling at FTL will experience time dilation and will be thousands of years after the reaper invasion upon arrival in the Andromeda galaxy.

@crusaderprophet: Crusader, do you have any links you can share about the Pathfinders leaving Earth while Shepard was still there? I only found one which was basically a fan theory, nothing stated by the devs.

@crusaderprophet: I hope it isn't THAT long, weren't there rumored characters making cameo appearances from ME3? Given that they live that long (asari, krogan)

@fulcrvm: If those characters were in the same ship or left the Milky Way galaxy at the same time as the pathfinders, the time dilation effect will keep them around at the same age except the time to travel to Andromeda in FTL speed. Remember Krogans and Asari live hundreds of years, so even if generations of Ryder thrived in Tempest before reaching Andromeda, the same krogan and asari will be there to witness the arrival in the same crew,

Wasn't one the things mentioned about Andromeda is that it takes place in a totally different galaxy than the one that the Reapers invaded? So there should be no books to "bridge the gap" - "gap" suggests that Andromeda takes place after ME3, therefore one of the endings will have to be canonised (I'd prefer the green beam of light personally, for all it matters), which defeats the purpose. I liked the idea of ambiguity - given it happens somewhere else entirely, it could be going on at the same time as the first trilogy and not matter. When "bridging a gap" is necessary, it takes that element away.

wth ?! gamers shouldn't have to BUY and READ books to understand their GAMES because the dev's f'ed up their last game endings like a toss salad of crap... ME3 made me not care about a ME4 (aka Andromeda) and I am pushing it further OUT of my MIND now because I'm not buying the books

@blitxxx1981: They said it'll be part of the saga, just like Star Wars books expanded on the Universe that was created there, doubt it'll have much bearing on Andromeda, but if it revisits some of the old favorites like Garrus, i'm in.

This is such a freaking lazy cop out...."we're too lazy to add anything IN-GAME that would make sense and bridge any gaps...SO READ ABOUT IT"....

I love the Mass Effect series and everything, but this really sours it for me, personally.

@crusaderprophet: That sounds promising at least. I can't help but believe that Bioware's going to pick one of the flavors of ending where the relay network was destroyed as the default/canon choice, and trying to reconcile that, an event that should have scoured the galaxy (nearly at best) clean of life with a new game that has its origins in events that take place in a post-ME3 Milky Way that survives intact would just drag the game down for me.

@Marikhen: It's taking place in another galaxy, Andromeda galaxy. so whatever happened in Milky Way wouldn't affect there. The choices in the ending only affected Milky Way galaxy, since there aren't mass relays between galaxies, there is no way for the energy from Shepard's choices to propagate.

@crusaderprophet: I got that, that's why I said that your statement sounded promising. All I was doing after was explaining why the situation concerned me, that Andromeda might take place in some story point that, based on what was established in the first two games, was thematically insupportable if not impossible. You cleared up that that won't be the case.

Lol, that's pretty lame Bioware is wrapping up the trilogy in books. Bad enough the first character they reveal is some ugly chic that looks like a dude, face wise. I may wait for a price drop on this one. Bioware is pro SJW.

For those whining about the game not being self contained, if its anything like the other books, its just stuff that if you don't know it--really doesn't impact the game. I mean did not knowing about Saren/Anderson's past really matter in ME1? I imagine, they are just going to go in depth with the ending of 3, anything directly doing with this game will of course be referenced in the game again.

Definitely going to check them out if i have the opportunity...however i'm still pretty disappointed with the lack of Mass Effect at this E3, i feel EA missed the chance to surprise all of us with a demo like Bethesda did the previous year with Fallout 4.

So the books that bridge the story gap are mostly all coming out after the game gets released? That's helpful.

I think most people wanna forget the ending of ME3, dragging it up again in a trilogy of books isnt gonna improve things.

So everyone just relax, and forget the last 10 minutes of ME3 ever happened, it was all just a bad dream, the game ended with the one and only Marauder Shields.

Now lets all move forward and hope they do a good job with the new game.

I HATE this idea.

I love reading, but I do not want to have to read some poorly written toilet novella just to fill me in on the story of my video game.

If it's relevant to the story of the game... put it in the ****ing game.

So, will we see actual RPG elements back? Will we see a written story with characters in mind, and carefully placed, well thought out plot devices, like the 1st one? The 2nd and the 3rd butchered Garren, Joker's, Ashley's, and Wrex's arc's. Seriously if Bioware stuck to their story making guns, made TPS better with the RPG elements that existed in the first one, instead of the hackjob TPS that we got from the 2nd and 3rd. They just wanted to make a cliche'd sci-fi action film more than actually creating a space opera similar to what happened with KotoR 1 and KotoR 2

@Rifleman22388: ME1 was truly up there alongside KOTOR1+2. ME2 and 3 were so disappointing in contrast. They basically told a story and you were a passenger. I want the game to be about my story!

@Rifleman22388: Hopefully they wont try to straddle the RPG/Shooter fence again, like they did in ME1; that hurt both parts of the gameplay. Combat either needs to be a shooter (player skill based) or an RPG (character skill based). Trying to mix them just ends with shooting that feels bad and a highly trained special forces character who can't hit the broad side of a barn until a dozen plus levels get dumped into their weapon skills.

Guess I'll never know what happens between series. I know games like The Witcher were based on books and that's fine, but I couldn't care less for these cash grab books based on games. I'd rather read original novels that are much more worthy of my time.

Why dont they accept their ME3 story was retarded, cut it out and create an independent story for andromeda? I dont see the point of making more stupid explanations to explain their stupid explanations.
