Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is shaping up to be one of the biggest movie releases of early 2023, and a lengthy new trailer shows off not only its impressive fantasy world, but also its lighthearted approach to the genre.

The trailer begins with Holga the Barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez) and Edgin the Bard (Chris Pine) in a tough situation, disarmed and tied up by the bad guys. However, Holga, quickly turns the tables on the hapless guards, while Edgin spouts quips in the background. This scene sets the tone for the rest of the trailer, which combines frenetic action with a large number of goofy jokes.

Featured scenes include a number of devious traps familiar to any D&D player, a battle against a dragon and other terrifying beasts, plenty of swordfights, and even a cameo by a mimic. As a whole, it seems that the film's goal is to combine the chaotic, raucous atmosphere of a good D&D campaign with an engaging heist tale. Given the success of similarly themed D&D stories like Acquisitions Incorporated, it's an interesting direction for the film, but we'll have to wait and see if it sticks the landing.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will release in theaters March 31, following a premiere at South by Southwest on March 10. A spin-off TV show is reportedly in the works, and will stream on Paramount+, though there's no word on a potential release date.
