Netflix Cancels Another Marvel Show -- Daredevil Gets The Axe

Netflix cuts the superhero show after three seasons.

The Marvel Netflix show Daredevil has been canceled. It becomes the third Marvel show on Netflix to get canceled in two months, following the axing of Iron Fist and Luke Cage in October.

In a statement to Deadline, Netflix confirmed Daredevil's third season, which premiered in October, was its last. "We are tremendously proud of the show's last and final season and although it's painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note."

Now Playing: Netflix Cancels Another Marvel Show -- Daredevil Gets The Axe - GameSpot Universe News Update

Netflix thanked showrunner Erik Oleson, as well as the writers, cast, and crew, while the network also said it was grateful to the fans who watched the show since it premiered in 2015.

Daredevil's three seasons will stay on Netflix "for years to come," Netflix said, adding that you can expect to see Daredevil the character in "future projects" from Marvel.

Charlie Cox played Daredevil on the Netflix show, with a supporting cast led by Vincent D'Onofrio.

With Daredevil's cancellation, Netflix now has just two Marvel shows that continue production: Jessica Jones and The Punisher. Marvel's move away from Netflix is not all that surprising, given parent company Disney is launching a streaming service of its own, Disney+, in 2019.

The Deadline report also offers some insight into the relationship between Netflix and Marvel, and it sounds less than great. Netflix and Marvel reportedly clashed over the number of episodes in a season, while there have been creative issues as well, the site said. You can read the full story on Deadline here.

What a shame. I enjoyed most of what Daredevil gave us. It was leaps and bounds better over Iron First (though the second season was much improved over the horrific first season) and Luke Cage.....awful.

As for Disney, I haven't really enjoyed a Marvel movies since Iron Man 2 (which was okay). Most others have been overly corny and not really entertaining. The Marvel movies have moved from good to okay to dumb, much like how X-Men was a good movie, I thought X-Men 2 was better, but then it went to shit with X-Men: The Last Stand

The darker atmosphere brought around in a few of the movies made them feel a bit more realistic and what I'd actually like to see from these movies, such as Thor - Dark World and Captain America Civil War (they weren't great, but had a darker theme to them).

Making the movies flashy and poorly written (Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, Iron Man 3, Guardian of the Galaxy 1 & 2, Avengers Ultron & Infinity War and the list goes on) seems to be Disney's signature move.

Daredevil is more down to earth - sure there are parts of the show that made me go, "Really? This is stupid." But things come back around to the root of the show. Overall it's gritty, rough, daring, dark and set in a way that makes things feel believable even though you know they're not. The Marvel movies from Disney feel like they took cues from Power Puff Girls on how to be flashy and Barney (or perhaps Teletubbies) on how to be corny and Disney's fear to allow the movies to be rough and gritty like the actual comics....Disney pretty much sucks and they're not the company we need for handling these series.

I'm okay with Daredevil stopping after this season - though we're kind of left hanging here on how the characters move on.....a lack of closure. I just wasn't a fan of Bullseye in the show. His story of who he is and why he is the way he is was pretty good, but a character that just walks around throwing anything and everything, even without looking, and striking his target is stupid. It felt like how they ended the second Spider-Man from the first reboot (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) where they had a guy in a mechanical rhino suit.....it just didn't fit and felt like a lame attempt to drive another season with a mediocre villain.

@neatfeatguy: You got a weird taste in movies man... maybe you're just not into superhero movies judging from what you call "poorly written" movies.

Many of those shows had too much filler, but overall I really liked the Punisher, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones. The Defenders weren't too bad either. Luke Cage and Iron Fist, well, they were kinda boring.

Are they insane? Daredevil was by far the BEST show of the bunch. Sure, Punisher is great, but Daredevil was just a master piece.

@warmblur: I see why, but they were much darker back in the day. Watch old school Mickey Cartoons for some old racist garbage. I don't like them for that reason, but at least they were real back then. Ever watch this 3D Mickey Garbage joke crap that's fed to kids? They talk to them like they're zombies. It's so insincere and brainwashy. .. Ugh. I gotta say that LEGO games are the JAM though. LEGO BATMAN is genius. Sickens me that Pissney owns them too. .. UGH .. Next they'll own you and me. ..

I guess the likely hood of Blade, Moon Knight and Ghost Rider getting their own series is next to nothing now. Disney have said they won't make mature content for their streaming service.

Man that sucks, I just hope Jones and Punisher can at least get their next seasons out the door before Netflix also cuts them off for Disney.

@koospetoors: I doubt it. Disney had no trouble axing a Pirates of the Caribbean RPG that was more than 80% finished.

If. Daredevil is getting canceled then all Marvel Shows on Netflix are getting canceled. It is clear they are getting canceled because of Disney's upcoming streaming service. And I'm sure Disney is going to bring them to their service. Anything Disney or Netflix say about these shows cancellation is just PR talk.

So basically streaming services are starting to have the same issues aa cable services. Many players in the business with their own catalog of shows that they don't share between competitors. Forcing people to pay for multiple streaming services.

We all know what will be the result of this.

@joalopes: I I agree with your post for some customers do not understand what is going on. Netflix has to honor Disney wishes being Disney owns the licenses for Marvel and Netflix has no say on what happens to Marvel shows. I do not watch them anyway so no loss to me.

@joalopes: Completely agree with your comments. Also, I would be surprised if this new Disney streaming service would allow for content with "TV-MA" ratings - doesn't seem like something they would be doing, but I guess we will see. I know I won't be paying for yet another service as I'm already paying for Netflix, Hulu, & WWE.

@mikeman99: if the goal is to bring daredevil to their service to draw in viewers we all know it’ll fail because it won’t be the daredevil show we fell in love with. What a waste of a great show.

Daredevil is my favorite Marvel project. I'm extremely saddened by this news, and I hope somehow Disney takes the show and keeps it going.

I know this will never happen, but a man can dream. This was such an amazing show.

You know, this really wouldn't be such a bad thing if we could expect the Disney service to be good, but in all likelihood it will be radically overpriced like everything they do, like $30 a month.

Out of all the Netflix-Marvel shows, I'm hoping this is the one to be renewed on Disney's streaming channel. Would be fine to add in the others too as guest stars or to make it part of the bigger picture finally.

Lol

All the wishful thinkers, Disney is going to reboot the shows... As cartoons for the TV with a TV Y rating LMAO. Luke Cage and Dragon for sure.

I said it when they canceled Dragon fist that all marvel´s IP where going back to Disney, if you want to be hopeful is that daredevil might getting up being added to MCU. Kill foggy and karen tho.... worst secondaries i seen on a tv show in a long time.

I thought they were just teaming up Luke Cage and Ironfist, but Daredevil? Yeah, it really does seem like Disney is just trying to consolidate all of their Marvel properties.

*So according to that article, the stupidity seems to extend to both sides. Netflix is cheaping out it seems, which sounds strange given these shows aren't big on special effect, and they're also constantly pressuring the shows writers; however, they have also pressured Marvel to make fewer than 13 shows which apparently Marvel is really upset about because they want to make MORE episodes...which is nuts, because 13 episodes is too long.

If Disney does decide to pick up Daredevil where it left off (i.e. no reboot) then I might have to subscribe. The show was just that good.

The hell?

I can accept the cancellation of the other Marvel shows, but this one was a gem. I was never really a fan of Daredevil before this either, this show was just awesome. I hope ccgod is right though as I can't understand why this show would be canceled.

@Smosh150: It's Disney. There was a lot of friction apparently, and Netflix was cheaping out, but it doesn't matter. They were still in the planning stages of new seasons. Disney cut the cord.

Sadly, ccgod is not correct. Disney always does things their own way. MAYBE Marvel Studios is in full control here, but I highly doubt it. Disney will not allow a show like it on their service.

@Barighm: That is just too bad.

Marvel has movies that are too corny and silly for me, but the shows are just gritty and serious enough that I can't help but love them (Except for shows like Agents of Shield). I like superhero shows not to be some happy dappy "the hero always save the day" type of show, but like you say it is Disney in control.

Edit: Looking at your above comment, I wouldn't mind more episodes as long as the quality doesn't suffer. I miss the days where seasons were 25~ episodes long, but then again I don't know if that is feasible in this day and age.

@BMWPro77: Oh, I'm sure they will reboot the shows, but it will be new people and with a more family friendly vibe. DIsney always does it their own way, and until they do otherwise, I see no evidence to suggest that will change. Hopefully this will be the exception. But it won't. Not while shows like the Flash are doing so well.
