Netflix Cancels Another Marvel Show -- Daredevil Gets The Axe

Netflix cuts the superhero show after three seasons.

The Marvel Netflix show Daredevil has been canceled. It becomes the third Marvel show on Netflix to get canceled in two months, following the axing of Iron Fist and Luke Cage in October.

In a statement to Deadline, Netflix confirmed Daredevil's third season, which premiered in October, was its last. "We are tremendously proud of the show's last and final season and although it's painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note."

Now Playing: Netflix Cancels Another Marvel Show -- Daredevil Gets The Axe - GameSpot Universe News Update

Netflix thanked showrunner Erik Oleson, as well as the writers, cast, and crew, while the network also said it was grateful to the fans who watched the show since it premiered in 2015.

Daredevil's three seasons will stay on Netflix "for years to come," Netflix said, adding that you can expect to see Daredevil the character in "future projects" from Marvel.

Charlie Cox played Daredevil on the Netflix show, with a supporting cast led by Vincent D'Onofrio.

With Daredevil's cancellation, Netflix now has just two Marvel shows that continue production: Jessica Jones and The Punisher. Marvel's move away from Netflix is not all that surprising, given parent company Disney is launching a streaming service of its own, Disney+, in 2019.

The Deadline report also offers some insight into the relationship between Netflix and Marvel, and it sounds less than great. Netflix and Marvel reportedly clashed over the number of episodes in a season, while there have been creative issues as well, the site said. You can read the full story on Deadline here.

I would like to say this to who ever gives a shit. I understand why Disney/Marvel are pulling its content from Netflix, as the upcoming streaming wars are heating up. But the Jeph Loeb run Marvel TV division of Disney better remember that in 2013 they were incredibly grateful to Netflix who brought mature content of their IPs to the modern age of streaming and had nothing but praise and big plans to expand their series on the service even more. It was all champagne and roses. And the way they treat Netflix now will come to haunt them if Disney + versions of marvel tv turn out to be more Inhumans and then they really 'need' a huge streaming service to promote their IPs, but are then avoided because of how they handled their shit now.

Netflix, really promoted and gave a free range to some amazing talent in Hollywood to bring what is cool about comics to tv. Somehow I doubt the Disney channel versions will and or could... do the same. Maybe have Justin Beiber be the next Daredevil.

@jenovaschilld: "Justin Beiber be the next Daredevil."

That, right there, is rated R horror.

Not surprising considering Netflix is getting rid of anything now controlled by Disney. I noticed a lot of TV shows related to Fox are also being removed from Netflix.

@lion2447: Actually it is the other way around, if you have been reading the news lately - ABC/Disney is slowly pulling its IPs from all streaming services in preparation for Disney + that will go in head to head competition with Netflix. Netflix would love to keep its Marvel shows as they generate some of their highest numbers. Luckily Jessica Jones and Punisher2 are already in production and we will at least get to see them before they too are pulled I am sure.

Another big one will be warner brothers and AT&T streaming services who are also starting to pull their content from streaming services like Netflix, Prime in preparation for their launch as well. The streaming wars are going ahead strong -see here in this USA today article.

This will be both good and bad for us consumers. More new and varied content at a reasonably cheap price as these streaming services competition will keep prices from rising for a bit. But it will be harder and harder to find what we want to watch as many cannot afford or care to bother with having cable, and a dozen different paid for streaming services.

Y’all just watch. All these dark and gritty Marvel shows/ movies we used to have are going bye bye. Mark my words. We will never get another R rated, or TV MA rated Marvel property again as long as Disney has their greedy, grubby, sissy little paws all over it.

And just to add insult to injury and sh-t in our eyes, I'll betcha Disney comes out with a campy, bright-colored Saturday-morning-style Daredevil cartoon.

@esqueejy: When the whole sell went down and Disney bought Marvel I was in disbelief I thought that was one awful and awful sell. Marvel must have been doing really bad and was disparate need of some hard cash. At the time when the whole shi?? Sell went down I was asking my self what the hell are we gonna see next a Mickey Mouse Fighting Galactus comic book edition. Also That's my fear that Disney is gonna turn Marvel into a Saturday morning cartoon for children 3 to 6 years old.

@Lunatic420s: Yeah, but do you have any idea how much more money Disney could milk out of peoples' already empty wallets by forcing a subscription fee on people, so that they get paid whether you watch or not, rather than a license fee that is most likely tied to number of views? Disney sucks now anyway. It has for a couple decades. They've gotten too greedy and have ruined too many IPs they bought up in their quest to destroy competition.

Only the first season was really good anyway. This was bound to happen sooner or later. Most people were bored of this series.

@tomservo51: because they ruin everything they touch? true. This is more on Netflix though, they already had the rights to the show, they didn't want Disney to benefit from Netflix successful shows. Netflix greed killed the show.

This stinks. Daredevil was literally one of the most well done Marvel products, even compared to most of the movies. Disney should go die in a fire.

@esqueejy: And D'Onofrio portrayal of the Kingpin was the best villain to ever be portrayed on tv save for Killgrave which is really saying something.

@jenovaschilld: You might be right...at least, I can't think of one better off the top of my head. He was brilliant as Kingpin. Some of the closeup shots really showed how insane his facial muscle control is for making twitches and barely noticeable expressions.

I think this will result in less content for Marvel in general. Will we see a DC resurgence due to the void?

@csward: the magic eight ball says .... Maybe. Nah marvel content is not going anywhere, just to a different service and luckily DC is still doing great on tv - it may not increase the content from DC but it wont hurt it any.

And you're promoting piracy, which I'm pretty sure is against the rules.

@tabyrd32: They’ve know how many people watch the show. Either Disney doesn’t want competition and doesn’t care how many people liked Daredevil, or Netflix canceled it because not enough people did. Either way, I have to imagine the folks in charge thought about the outcry before they made the call.

If Daredevil is gone ALL of them will be gone. Once Netflix canceled Luke Cage I knew what they were up to. Disney is about to start it's own service and it'll most likely be some overpriced bullshit but we'll see. There is no reason you'd have the competition's shows on your platform anyway. ALL of them will be canceled soon.

I was very disappointed to hear this news. I've loved every season of Daredevil and my wife and I have been really into the characters they are able to bring to life. Kingpin has been excellent. Daredevil, great of course. I loved the promise of Bullseye. And while some people complained about season 2, I personally loved both Punisher and Electra and felt S2 balanced both those story lines very well. As a comic nerd from way back, Iron Fist I really wanted to like but it was bad. It just wasn't Iron Fist so much as a CW show crammed into the Marvel/Netflix template. That's why it just didn't work...it wasn't an accurate representation of the character or the comic, and it was way too long for the "idea" they had. Which is problem 2, the length of the seasons. If you only have enough idea for 10 episodes. Or 8 even. Don't arbitrary drag it out for 13 because reasons. Almost every season of every marvel/Netflix show has had the same problem of crapping out in the middle to dump some filler episodes on us for no real reason or purpose other than to pad the season length. I hope Punisher and Jessica Jones get another season still. I am a huge fan of both those characters and loved their first seasons. But again, JJ season 2 was a huge let down because it wasn't JJ. It wasn't the character from the comic or season 1. It wasn't the continuation of the character we got in S1. It went from being a nourish detective story on the periphery of the super hero world (and a possible examination of the true nature of those super heroes) to a story about mommy issues? What? I've read every single Alias and JJ comic out there...and season 2 was not representative of the comic or the character in any way which doesn't give me much hope for season 3.

Yup Netflix, just kill off one of your flagship series why not .. this essentially kills the remaining Marvel series for me as cross overs now are looking unlikely etc. What will be cancelled next I wonder ..Black Mirror ? treasure and nurture your best efforts, just don't kill them off. I think I'm going to cancel my subscription, there are only a handful of series I like and they don't come on often.

@dfernand: Was going to happen eventually as Disney owns the license and not Netflix, There are reasons Marvel shows are being cancelled on Netflix and you can thank Disney for it, they are starting it's own Marvel channel and it do not want another channel pulling it's customers from them.
