More games released on Steam in 2014 already than during all of 2013

Is it possible for Steam to have too many games?

No Caption Provided

More games have been released on Steam just 20 weeks into 2014 than have been during all of 2013.

According to an Analysis from Gamasutra, the influx of new releases is thanks in part to Steam Greenlight, which has been adding as much as 75 games to Steam at a time recently.

Since Valve’s co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell previously said that the company’s goal is to “make Greenlight go away” and make Steam more of a self-publishing platform, it’s likely that we’ll only see the number of releases increase in the future.

It’s nice to have a huge selection of games to choose from, of course, but it also makes it hard for games from smaller developers to get noticed, and discovering the games you’re particularly interested in.

We can already see Valve trying to mitigate this problem with several crowdsourcing tools like user reviews, the ability to tag games, as well as report them for offensive content. Steam’s front page now also defaults to the “Top Sellers” tab instead of the “New Releases” tab, which turns over very quickly these days.

Do you think Steam has a problem of offering too many games? Let us know in the comments below.

Too bad a good portion of it is probably the rubbish which is being thrown onto it. Steam really needs some quality control at the moment.

It's hard to filter through all of them and find that unpolished gem. But when you do...oh is it so satisfying. One of my favs that I randomly came across was Hard Reset. Totally wasn't expecting that to be as good as it was and got it for about $5 at the time.

Too many games is never a problem. Most people know what they want anyway when they buy a game on Steam, and even when they are just browsing. So most of the shovelware usually gets ignored, and sinks to the bottom.

This is good news as long as it doesn't count "early access" titles too.

As other comments have said before me, and now I say in my own words - while I believe it's hard to have "too many games", it is possible to have "too much crap". Steam is oversaturated with too much indie crap and there is practically no official quality control on Valve's part. There are some genuinely good indie games on Steam, some thanks to Greenlight, but it's becoming more difficult to find them with the constant tsunamis of other bare-bone and/or unimpressive indie games that are constantly being pushed through Greenlight or Early Access.

Nowadays, I pretty much avoid indie titles like the plague and stick to more prominent publishers. Unless, the game is from an indie publisher whose games I have enjoyed in the past, or if there is still much acclaim about a particular indie game post-release.

Personally, a lot of the indie games on Steam are just utter crap. Even ones that were hyped to be good ones were over rated IMO. If I do buy from steam, I pretty much still end up getting more well known, quality commercial titles like Far Cry 3, Arkham Asylum, and Dark Soul when they go on sell. Seriously I would not fund any of those crap indie games. There is just no quality control. I do enjoy retro games and I know what old school good games is. I will take Super Mario, Castlevania games over those lousy wanna be indie games any day.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There are few indie games on steam that are even the quality of average nes and snes games. A lot of the indie games have graphics worse than nes games

Yeah, it's a shame that this influx of games is turning Steam into the AppStore. It's great to have many games, but Quality Control would be welcome to sort out the BS that is present in there.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Valve have pulled lots of garbage off of Steam.

You also have to consider early access games are in the alpha stage, so not everything is going to play like a finished product just yet.

More games as always good, but Steam seriously needs a massive redesign, it's ancient and it's store page is a mess, sorting through all the games deep buried inside doesn't help the developers. Nor the gamers for not providing any recommendation from the games you play.

It's a huge problem. Too many games and not enough quality control. User reviews and comments are a joke on Steam, the game creators can delete or even alter the content of negative comments and forum posts. I find myself buying fewer and fewer games on Steam simply because I can't trust the information I'm given via Steam about the games I'm looking at.

No such things as to many games. However, they need to improve their search and categorization features.

It's pretty easy to notice ''nope'' games on Steam, but it's also annoying having to through all the junk. I'm quite certain that i've played every game on Steam, that i'd like to play either way. Nowadays i'm just looking for entirely new games.

I don't even vote on Greenlight games anymore. 99% of them look like something someone knocked out over a weekend with RPG Creator.

I don't mind publishers putting their back catalogs on Steam, but there's something wrong when brand-new games are pushed down onto the second page of new releases the same day they come out by a bunch of games from 1998.

Steam is just getting filled with shitty indie games now. Before it was ok since they seemed to have some kind of standard to uphold, now any old crap gets put on.

Steam is a terrible service, GOG and gamerrepublic.com are far better services and don't carry the stink of Gabe Newell's deception.

So you want a game store to purposefully hide games from you?

Kind of weird.

There are some great indie games out there. Dust an Elysian Tail, Hotline Miami, Rise of the Triad (2013), Shadow Warrior (2013), and Rocketbirds Hardboiled Chicken being some of the best examples.

Steam has since about 2008 had WAY WAY too many Indie games. How many times have we heard "Indies push the limits of creativity and are unlimited by big publishers like EA", to which I say "Indies have that potential but most of them don't live up to it.".

Indies are a plague. Those select few games that are worth picking up are normally drown before they even get started. It is time Steam started being more select with its game releases. It is even difficult to find a game that you want to play now because of the amount of Indies.

Couple that with the crap interface on Steam and it is like pulling teeth.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Without indies, there woud be almost nothing but COD clones. Thats the problem with big developers, they only care about making money. Yes steam standards have dropped and the search and category functions need to be addressed, but locking out indies would be as stupid as slamming a door on your junk.

One of the biggest problems is that there are way too many publishers dumping their back catalog and it all ends up in 'new releases.' Steam needs to list the date the game was first published and not the date it got onto Steam.
