Microsoft extending 360 warranty to three years

[UPDATE 2] An apologetic software giant to replace any console suffering "red ring of death" for free worldwide; extension applies to every console sold since launch; company will take $1.05 billion charge.

Today, Microsoft announced that it is once again revamping its warranty scheme for the Xbox 360. After mounting anecdotal evidence of the system's failure rate due to the dreaded "red ring of death" (three flashing red lights on the console's front panel), the publisher is changing its warranty to cover systems affected by the red ring for three years from the date of purchase. Any console that suffers the aforementioned failure in any territory the 360 is sold can be returned to Microsoft for repair for free, because the warranty also includes shipping charges.

"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," the company said in a statement. The three-year extension is for all 360s, and will be retroactively applied to every console bought since the 360 launched. That means anyone who bought a console in November 2005 will be covered until November 2008.

[UPDATE] Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of the Entertainment and Devices Division of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business, said he is personally sorry about anyone who's suffered a 360 failure. "We haven't done right by our customers, and for that I apologize," he told GameSpot. "We listened, and we're going to make it right." In an in-depth interview with GameSpot, Moore outlined the new warranty, and emphasized it would be "global" in nature.

Moore also shot down point-blank unconfirmed reports that Forza Motorsport 2 was "bricking" consoles. "It's not a software issue, guys," he assured GameSpot. "It's a variety of hardware issues which we're taking steps to rectify." Though he declined to name any issue specifically, Moore said that Microsoft has improved the 360 hardware to help ensure that future batches of 360 hardware will not suffer similar issues.

Customers who have already paid for repairs that would be covered by the new policy will be reimbursed automatically, according to Microsoft. As a result of this new warranty extension, the publisher said it will report a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion charge to its earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007.

From its November 2005 launch onward, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been plagued by reports of malfunctioning consoles. While the company downplayed reports of faulty hardware for the better part of a year after launch, last September it acknowledged that its original batch of systems was failing at an unusually high rate. Microsoft extended the standard 90-day warranty to a full year, and promised to reimburse all those customers who had already been made to pay for repairs.

In April, the company once again tweaked its warranty service, saying it would no longer charge shipping on repaired Xbox 360 consoles, and would extend the warranty on those repairs.

The new warranty extension arrives atop a growing tide of reports of 360 hardware problems, including a Monday DailyTech.com report quoting retailers as saying up to 33 percent of launch units fail. To help clarify the question of 360 hardware reliability, GameSpot conducted a week-long informal poll of its users, asking simply, "Has your Xbox 360 failed?"

Of the 49,934 respondents who said they owned a 360, 27,579 (55.2 percent) claimed to have had no problems at all. However, a startling 22,355 respondents--44.7 percent--claimed to have had at least one 360 fail. Some 13,858 respondents (27.8 percent) said they had one console die: of those, 10,012 (20.0 percent) said their console was replaced for free and 3,846 (7.7 percent) attested they had to pay. Others were even less lucky, with 3,619 (7.2 percent) saying they had suffered two dead 360s, and 4,878 (9.7 percent) reporting over two instances of hardware failure. (The initial percentages were slightly inaccurate--GameSpot regrets the error.)

The poll results are not definitive, and given the open nature of the poll's voting, its results could be manipulated. However, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence pointing to a high 360 failure rate. Inside the GameSpot offices, 23 editors own 26 360s bought between November 2005 and January 2007. Eight have had their consoles fail completely at least once; of those, two editors suffering complete 360 failures on two occasions. Two others are experiencing ongoing problems, including USB port failure and intermittent cases of the "red ring." The remaining editors have encountered no hardware defects.

Wow, way to go MS, not for building a crappy product that plays great games, but for actually doing the right thing. Props.

There shouldn't be any bashing of Microsoft on this. Unlike Sony and its PS2 issues, Microsoft stepped up to the plate. After dealing with both Microsoft and Sony's customer service, Microsoft wins hands down.

Hmm I guess MS's game division won't be turning a profit this year if you add in these new costs.

watchcity, THEY HAVN'T IGNORED THE PROBLEM FOR 2 YEARS!?!?! My friend had two of them die on him (he puts it on the shag carpet and it overheats and dies). Sent it in both times and got it replaced for free. FREE SHIPPING, FREE XBOX, EVERYTHING.

That's great of Microsoft to do that. I DO think they care, if they are willing to take the losses for broken consoles. The problems are greater than many originally thought. I know - I had the Red Ring!

Spin this into a negative if you want, but this is one of the best examples of Corportate Responsibility that we've seen in the industry. And this isn't to say that MS is better than Nintendo or Sony at all. Its just saying that this is truly a stand up gesture that's best for YOU, THE CONSUMER!

Lmao, its a shame that console like 360 does this, i mean microsoft are fing bums dude, get up and fix the console its shouldent be to hard you guys are rich as h***!!!!!! Anyways i dont think anybody should have their console breaking on them , if you buy something you should expect it to work for a long time not for an years even though the warrenty is 3 years its still a pain in the A** to have it break on you and then you have to send it and wait about a week, i gave up on the 360 just for the fact that they dont respect their own consumers.

Wow - now that's good business. Thanks to MS for owning up to their mistakes and making it right. That combined with the awesome games out (and coming out) for the 360 are great reasons to own the system - and love it.

You guys are pretty funny. This is not "nice" of them. They have ignored a serious problem for TWO YEARS and are only now doing something about it because the media is starting to catch on and report how serious the problem really is. Also, this is a hit of over $1 billion. That is huge because this division of Microsoft will yet again have a large loss. Microsoft as a whole is so huge that you may not think it matters, but 5 or 6 years of a division that has yet to turn up a profit, and now may have record losses, may not sit well with the big dogs on top. Xbox planet is taking a huge hit because of this.

It is comforting to know that I can get the 360 repaired free of charge if it breaks down but I would much rather have it not break down in the first place. Hopefully Microsoft can get it sorted within the year because I intend to buy my first 360 soon.

nevershort I'm not going to give credit to a company that put out a poorly made and poorly tested machine. Give them credit for what?? Doing the right thing and avoiding lawsuits... PLEASE give me a break. Some people just like to moan about everything, this is actually a GOOD thing, I've not suffered the Ring of Death (except after having a hot curry the night before), but if my console does get a fault now its saved me £85. thats GREAT!!!

Nevershort, You are failing to see the point. This is a good thing. The reason they are doing 3 years is to cover the consoles at launch as well. If anyone is to much of a **** to wait a few days for their console to get fixed then they should find another hobby. I bet over 90% of these consoles breaking down is USER related. OVERHEATING ON CARPET, AND OVERHEATING IN ENTAINMENT STANDS.

You damn well should give them credit because they cant be sued for this issue, lots of electronics break and nobody gets sued..Sony didnt get sued for the 1st 2 horrid years of PS2. Most companies would own up to an issue and they wouldnt change a warrenty to 3 years either. Grow up.

theres gotta be more to it at some point then Just hard/software problems. Every system i ever owned, ever, never had a problem. My first PS2 was buggy like 4 years down the line but it was used and from a Blockbuster so god knows what the person did to it, but it never failed me or had problems either has the newer slimlined one i got, and it got droped on the floor hard (not by me). So i'm starting to think, its not always the developers fault, but alot of customer fault as well. There's got to be a clear answer. But i know i have a clear question, Do you take care of your stuff?

AngelsongCA said "That's simply amazing. Nintendo nor Sony would ever do anything like that. XBOX 360 owners should be proud." Kind of hard to make this bold of a statement when Nintendo nor Sony have had such high failure rates with their systems to know whether they would or not isn't it? Or maybe it's b/c Nintendo & Sony don't have a history of releasing products with terribly high failure rates. MS on the other hand...blue screen of death anyone?

This is great that microsoft is extending there warrenty. But why are people like "AnglesongCA" saying sony or nintendo would never do anything like this. Sony and nintendo DONT HAVE to do anything like this. And as for the people saying wait until the ps3 sales pickup, you shouldnt have to a week after the 360 came out there were huge reports of failures. GOOGLE IT, ITS TRUE!!!!!!!!

I had mine for more than a year and got the red ring of death several times in the last few days. Although it is now working I had them send me a box anyway because something is definately wrong. I like the 360 but, my PS2 never failed on me. Something to remember when the next next generation consoles come out.

ShiroRX, There isn't as many PS3's on the morket as 360's right now though. You are going to have failure rates in both consoles becuase of the CPU'S in them. A penitum 4 3.0 get really **** hot. I can't imagine the 3 core 3.2 or the CELL PROCESSOR!?!?!?! All I am saying is when the PS3 starts to pick up you should start seeing a bit higher failure rate. As for the Wii, I wouldn't expect a console with no good hardware in it to overheat. OVERHEATING IS THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THESE CONSOLES GUYS.
