Microsoft extending 360 warranty to three years

[UPDATE 2] An apologetic software giant to replace any console suffering "red ring of death" for free worldwide; extension applies to every console sold since launch; company will take $1.05 billion charge.

Today, Microsoft announced that it is once again revamping its warranty scheme for the Xbox 360. After mounting anecdotal evidence of the system's failure rate due to the dreaded "red ring of death" (three flashing red lights on the console's front panel), the publisher is changing its warranty to cover systems affected by the red ring for three years from the date of purchase. Any console that suffers the aforementioned failure in any territory the 360 is sold can be returned to Microsoft for repair for free, because the warranty also includes shipping charges.

"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," the company said in a statement. The three-year extension is for all 360s, and will be retroactively applied to every console bought since the 360 launched. That means anyone who bought a console in November 2005 will be covered until November 2008.

[UPDATE] Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of the Entertainment and Devices Division of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business, said he is personally sorry about anyone who's suffered a 360 failure. "We haven't done right by our customers, and for that I apologize," he told GameSpot. "We listened, and we're going to make it right." In an in-depth interview with GameSpot, Moore outlined the new warranty, and emphasized it would be "global" in nature.

Moore also shot down point-blank unconfirmed reports that Forza Motorsport 2 was "bricking" consoles. "It's not a software issue, guys," he assured GameSpot. "It's a variety of hardware issues which we're taking steps to rectify." Though he declined to name any issue specifically, Moore said that Microsoft has improved the 360 hardware to help ensure that future batches of 360 hardware will not suffer similar issues.

Customers who have already paid for repairs that would be covered by the new policy will be reimbursed automatically, according to Microsoft. As a result of this new warranty extension, the publisher said it will report a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion charge to its earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007.

From its November 2005 launch onward, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been plagued by reports of malfunctioning consoles. While the company downplayed reports of faulty hardware for the better part of a year after launch, last September it acknowledged that its original batch of systems was failing at an unusually high rate. Microsoft extended the standard 90-day warranty to a full year, and promised to reimburse all those customers who had already been made to pay for repairs.

In April, the company once again tweaked its warranty service, saying it would no longer charge shipping on repaired Xbox 360 consoles, and would extend the warranty on those repairs.

The new warranty extension arrives atop a growing tide of reports of 360 hardware problems, including a Monday DailyTech.com report quoting retailers as saying up to 33 percent of launch units fail. To help clarify the question of 360 hardware reliability, GameSpot conducted a week-long informal poll of its users, asking simply, "Has your Xbox 360 failed?"

Of the 49,934 respondents who said they owned a 360, 27,579 (55.2 percent) claimed to have had no problems at all. However, a startling 22,355 respondents--44.7 percent--claimed to have had at least one 360 fail. Some 13,858 respondents (27.8 percent) said they had one console die: of those, 10,012 (20.0 percent) said their console was replaced for free and 3,846 (7.7 percent) attested they had to pay. Others were even less lucky, with 3,619 (7.2 percent) saying they had suffered two dead 360s, and 4,878 (9.7 percent) reporting over two instances of hardware failure. (The initial percentages were slightly inaccurate--GameSpot regrets the error.)

The poll results are not definitive, and given the open nature of the poll's voting, its results could be manipulated. However, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence pointing to a high 360 failure rate. Inside the GameSpot offices, 23 editors own 26 360s bought between November 2005 and January 2007. Eight have had their consoles fail completely at least once; of those, two editors suffering complete 360 failures on two occasions. Two others are experiencing ongoing problems, including USB port failure and intermittent cases of the "red ring." The remaining editors have encountered no hardware defects.

Thank god I haven't had a problem (though I knock on wood now). The only problems with consoles I have ever had was with my second Gamecube (for Mario Kart). I bought it brand new from Gamestop and I swear it was refurbished. Gone are the days were you could use two cartridges as a quick fix to play. *sigh* BTW--Transformers FTW!!!!

Bruin4ev3r1520 said, Thats awesome! "We haven't done right by our customers, and for that I apologize." Its not everyday you see a major company admit that they were being unfair. And to take a 1 billion dollar hit. Go MS! That's exactly how I felt about it--that's a huge admission, and they're going to take a massive hit proving their commitment to the admission. It's harmful to their bottom line in the short term--so much for XBox profitability in 2008--but even if future haters will selectively recall only the failures, owners of 360s will probably never forget How MS Finally Manned the **** Up during the Summer of 2007. It also sends them into E3 on an unbelievably positive note. Wow. I never would have guessed that they'd address this problem so directly. I mean, even after their class-action lawsuit over PS2 Disc Read Errors, Sony NEVER admitted that the PS2 had a problem. Even to this day, Sony's stance toward DRE-bricked PS2s remains "Eff you, we're Sony."

Eventhough Microsoft released consoles with flaws in them the fact that they admitted they did something wrong and aren't ignoring the problem raises my respect for them by a lot.

Good move. "OTHER" companies should take note. When you make a mistake, fess up, correct the error, and move on.

salmonbate - they did ignore the problem because they never said there was a problem. Your friend's was replaecd for free because it was under warranty. Many products out there get replaced for free because they are under warranty for a period of time. The point is, when asked about this issue, they would respond by saying the defect rate is normal, when they knew that it was not. The fact is that the 360's hardware is garbage and has serious problems. Thus, they ignored the problem.

Sorry guys but I just fail to see this as a good thing unless I bought a 360 and it kept breaking (which isn't a good thing)... Doesn't this more or less describe impending, slowly approaching doom?? They are pretty much gauranteeing your 360's gonna break most likely within 3 years of purchase... why would you be happy about this? Yeah! I gotta 360, its probably gonna break within 3 years but they'll fix it for free(sarcasm oozing)... LOL

ok only three rings. well mine got the one light which meant something melted and had overheated. it is great because companies like EB prey on people to buy their warranties and even they just had to settle a suit because of it.

Props to Microsoft for implementing this policy and admitting they have made a mistake(s). It does stink for the people who have had to send their Xbox 360's in already and had to pay. My friend had to send his Xbox 360 in 6 times a pay for it. Again, at least they fixed the problem.

It has been their stnace from day 1, first they extended it an extra year, and now they are adding another year, so anyone who bought it at launch was never 'not covered'. If this was Sony, I'd be willing to bet you'd have to pay for a new system flat out.

I just paid $59.90 to get the extended 2 year warranty on my Elite. I should get a refund for this because now I will be covered until 2012. I don't need that much coverage since the next-gen Xbox will be out them. Did anybody try to get their money back for the warranty?

lol why not? once the media starts to catch on to how bad this problem is getting and you have 10+ new releases in the bank to make up for the lost millions it'd seem like as good a time as any to start doing something they should've been doing since day one, huh?

Now let us compare the rate of broken down units with the same amount of broken down units of PS3's. I mention rate since rate is INDEPENDENT of amount and is an actual comparison of units sold vs units damaged... The 360 now seems to be a piece of crap when such an generous warranty is a consolation of fast tracking the consoles into the market... this looks like losses for Microsoft. The Wii is out of this race probably since there are no next gen graphics into it... just plain old graphs with innovative game interface. This means that there is a higher risk of PS3 and 360 breaking down than Wiis.

I currently have the 3 red lights on my 360 and i called last week to have it exchanged. It was 2 weeks out of warranty. So Microsoft was going to charge me $160. I told them that i had the 1 year warranty with my retailer that just ended. They told me to go to the retailer to see if they would honor the expired warranty. They did. Although they only would exchange it for a refurbished one. Now i see that Microsoft is exchanging them for free on this new 3 year warranty. Great news. However i called Microsoft just now to make this exchange and they had NO KNOWLEDGE of this new 3 year warranty. They said its not on their official website or in their system. Grrrrrr. What does a guy have to do to get the service he deserves? Im on my 4th xbox 360 already!!!

"This makes me a little angry because I spent the 70 bucks to get the extended warranty hehe..." You should be glad though since this only covers the three rings. So you're fully covered while everyone else is screwed unless they did what you did
