Microsoft extending 360 warranty to three years

[UPDATE 2] An apologetic software giant to replace any console suffering "red ring of death" for free worldwide; extension applies to every console sold since launch; company will take $1.05 billion charge.

Today, Microsoft announced that it is once again revamping its warranty scheme for the Xbox 360. After mounting anecdotal evidence of the system's failure rate due to the dreaded "red ring of death" (three flashing red lights on the console's front panel), the publisher is changing its warranty to cover systems affected by the red ring for three years from the date of purchase. Any console that suffers the aforementioned failure in any territory the 360 is sold can be returned to Microsoft for repair for free, because the warranty also includes shipping charges.

"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," the company said in a statement. The three-year extension is for all 360s, and will be retroactively applied to every console bought since the 360 launched. That means anyone who bought a console in November 2005 will be covered until November 2008.

[UPDATE] Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of the Entertainment and Devices Division of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business, said he is personally sorry about anyone who's suffered a 360 failure. "We haven't done right by our customers, and for that I apologize," he told GameSpot. "We listened, and we're going to make it right." In an in-depth interview with GameSpot, Moore outlined the new warranty, and emphasized it would be "global" in nature.

Moore also shot down point-blank unconfirmed reports that Forza Motorsport 2 was "bricking" consoles. "It's not a software issue, guys," he assured GameSpot. "It's a variety of hardware issues which we're taking steps to rectify." Though he declined to name any issue specifically, Moore said that Microsoft has improved the 360 hardware to help ensure that future batches of 360 hardware will not suffer similar issues.

Customers who have already paid for repairs that would be covered by the new policy will be reimbursed automatically, according to Microsoft. As a result of this new warranty extension, the publisher said it will report a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion charge to its earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007.

From its November 2005 launch onward, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been plagued by reports of malfunctioning consoles. While the company downplayed reports of faulty hardware for the better part of a year after launch, last September it acknowledged that its original batch of systems was failing at an unusually high rate. Microsoft extended the standard 90-day warranty to a full year, and promised to reimburse all those customers who had already been made to pay for repairs.

In April, the company once again tweaked its warranty service, saying it would no longer charge shipping on repaired Xbox 360 consoles, and would extend the warranty on those repairs.

The new warranty extension arrives atop a growing tide of reports of 360 hardware problems, including a Monday DailyTech.com report quoting retailers as saying up to 33 percent of launch units fail. To help clarify the question of 360 hardware reliability, GameSpot conducted a week-long informal poll of its users, asking simply, "Has your Xbox 360 failed?"

Of the 49,934 respondents who said they owned a 360, 27,579 (55.2 percent) claimed to have had no problems at all. However, a startling 22,355 respondents--44.7 percent--claimed to have had at least one 360 fail. Some 13,858 respondents (27.8 percent) said they had one console die: of those, 10,012 (20.0 percent) said their console was replaced for free and 3,846 (7.7 percent) attested they had to pay. Others were even less lucky, with 3,619 (7.2 percent) saying they had suffered two dead 360s, and 4,878 (9.7 percent) reporting over two instances of hardware failure. (The initial percentages were slightly inaccurate--GameSpot regrets the error.)

The poll results are not definitive, and given the open nature of the poll's voting, its results could be manipulated. However, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence pointing to a high 360 failure rate. Inside the GameSpot offices, 23 editors own 26 360s bought between November 2005 and January 2007. Eight have had their consoles fail completely at least once; of those, two editors suffering complete 360 failures on two occasions. Two others are experiencing ongoing problems, including USB port failure and intermittent cases of the "red ring." The remaining editors have encountered no hardware defects.

Also, the warranty only applies to 360s suffering from the RROD syndrome, not "oops I dropped it out the window cuz I'm stupid" syndrome or what have you. Quoted from the above article: Any console which suffers the aforementioned failure--and only the aforementioned failure--can be returned to Microsoft for repair for free, as the warranty also includes shipping charges.

Nice to know they're man enough to admit there's a problem. Had to launch a lawsuit against Sony to get them to do anything about the PS2.

I haven't had my March '06 360 fail on me yet, but I'm so glad they finally decided to do this. Now not only am I free of the fear that my 360 will fail, but those unfortunate ones whose consoles have failed will be reimbursed. Congrats on one-upping Sony again, Microsoft. Sony never fixed my broken PS2.

If Sony had a systematic general hardware fault, sure they should have done it. They didn't and they don't currently so your argument is moot. MS is only offering extended warranty for one specific problem which is a general hardware fault impacting many. I still have 2 old style PS2's that work perfectly and you didn't hear about faults with Sony like you have with 360s. Make apples to apples comparisons not hog wild ones.

The PS3's been out 8 months and has about a 1% return rate, so I don't think Sony will have to meet Microsoft's "challenge" of finally doing what's right, since they built their system right from the beginning (not speaking about PS2)

Most consumer electronics of any sort are covered for a year at most so this is basically great news that MS would do this for ALL 360's.

They obviously need it... Why would you buy a console that breaks warranty or not period??? Is it just me or isn't quality better than quantity?? Thats what they get for jumping the gun and trying to beat everyone else in the console race. If the would have waited longer and thoroughly tested thier machine, they wouldn't be having this problem. I'm not going to give credit to a company that is doing the FAIR thing or maybe just avoiding lawsuits.... Funny how they did this after the issues were beginning to become widespread in the media... THEM SAVING THIER BUTTS DOES BENEFIT YOU THE CONSUMER but why did it have to take troubling stats to help you guys out when before they were just calling the issues "normal occurances"???

This is crazy... a company taking a 1 billion dollar loss just to satisfy their customers. Microsoft is serious about getting their piece of the console market. Good news.

This is good news at least Microsoft is doing something about it. This brings a peace of mind to 360 owners. Hardware failures are nothing new. Don't forget about Sony's Infamous D.R.E.s (Disc Read Errors) for the PS2 (even the slim PS2 had suffered from them) they didn't recognize that problem which caused them to get sued.

Whether or not this is an admission of guilt (which it probably is) doesn't make a difference. I didn't see Sony busting it's ass to fix my 5 busted PS2's a few years ago. They would have never taken a 1+ billion dollar hit. And this solves another problem too: People on the fence about buying a console who are afraid that it will crap out on them shortly after the one year warranty. Now they have three years of assurance, and I'd like to see Sony do this too WHETHER OR NOT THEY "HAVE TO" DUE TO INCIDENTS.

Mine got the rings of death last December and I got sent a refurb after sending the broken one away. Does this mean I will have a three year warranty from the date of purchase or the date I got the refurb?

Great news. I wanted to buy a 360 off eBay but was worried I'd get an old one that still had the design flaw. Now thats irrelevant. I don't care about companies making mistakes. The problem comes with how they deal with it. MS will fix it and foot 100% of the bill. You can't complain about that.

Why just the red rings? I had 2 go wrong, both faults had no red rings, just failure to load discs (please insert this disc into an xbox 360?).

@shinian, The last paragraph of Peter Moore's open letter says: This will take a few days to roll out globally, and I appreciate your continued patience as we launch this program. I've posted an FAQ that should address some additional questions, and we'll update it over the next few days. So I guess the warranty applies to Europe as well...

Nice job MS. Good to be accountable. Not to dismiss the corporate responsibility angle of this, I can't but help wonder if this move was also done to avoid the repercussions of a future class action lawsuit if MS did NOT step up to acknowledge this.

this is why i like microsoft better than sony, the ps2 lost a class action lawsuit while the xbox 360 avoided one. My broken ps2 wont get fixed for free, even after they lost the class action lawsuit you still had to pay shipping with sony.

FalconerX have to applaud ms on this one because regardless of what the true % of consoles that have this problem are its nice to see there admitting its there fault and there going to replace them for free for three years. Which suggests to me that the actual % of consoles that had red ring were actually really low % because the bill to replace it as mentioned would be in the billions and i somehow doubt any company would pay that. Im not a ms fanboy nor a sony fanboy having been lucky enough to own both consoles, but i think its pretty clear to see which company is trying hardest to undo there own faults with the consumers. well the other company is also trying to do that by getting rid of you know who I won't try to discredit him because without him there won't be playstation

This is great that microsoft is extending there warrenty. But why are people like "AnglesongCA" saying sony or nintendo would never do anything like this. Sony and nintendo DONT HAVE to do anything like this. And as for the people saying wait until the ps3 sales pickup, you shouldnt have to a week after the 360 came out there were huge reports of failures. GOOGLE IT, ITS TRUE!!!!!!!! All in all this is a good thing, but nothing to brag about to another company.

"Sorry guys but I just fail to see this as a good thing unless I bought a 360 and it kept breaking" An extended warranty and free repairs are always a good thing. It is saving a lot of 360 owners' money. Your argument just doesn't work.

My 360 is a second hand launch unit from December 05. No problems as of yet but I am curious if I am covered by this "new" warranty? When I got it from my friend he swore to me it had not been registered and had provided me with the receipt. It was originally bought for him by a guy in another city and then shipped to him the next day. I tried to register it and it would not let me. I called and spok to MS support and they said it had been registered. I quickly questioned my friend who still swears that his system was not registered. I was able to get the registration changed to me but the end result was the MS rep telling me it will not be covered for repairs if it needs any. I have the receipt from the store in NC where it was purchased. Can a store register the number of a system at the time of purchase???? It was from an EBGames and I seem to recall a similar "registration" process when I got my dreamcast back in 99.
