Microsoft E3 2017: Xbox One Backwards Compatibility For OG Xbox Games Won't Be As Extensive

"It won't be as big as Xbox 360, I'll tell people that."

Earlier this week at E3, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One's backwards compatibility lineup will add original Xbox games later this year. Don't expect the library of OG Xbox games playable on Xbox One to be as extensive as the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility lineup.

Speaking on Giant Bomb's live show tonight, Xbox boss Phil Spencer set expectations for the breadth of the library of OG Xbox games for Xbox One. He said the lineup will not be as large as the number of Xbox 360 games. Why? One part of it is the rights; it is more difficult to lock these down, Spencer said. And secondly, it is more technically difficult, Spencer explained.

"It won't be as big as Xbox 360, I'll tell people that," Spencer said.

The fact that the library of original Xbox games will be comparatively smaller than Xbox 360 is why Microsoft did not make as big a deal of OG Xbox backwards compatibility as it did when it announced Xbox 360 backwards compatibility at E3 2015.

There are only two OG Xbox games confirmed for the Xbox One's backwards compatibility library so far: Crimson Skies and Fuzion Frenzy. The program launches later this year. By comparison, there are more than 385 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility--you can see them all here.

Jade Empire and Shenmue II sure would be nice. After reading this I believe that is doubtful and the list will most likely consist of mostly first party titles. Others I'd like to see are the Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance games, Dungeons & Dragons Heroes and Oddworld Strangers Wrath. Star Wars Knights of Old Republic games, Jedi Knight and Republic Commando would be cool too. Also Conker Live & Reloaded would be incredible.

@Prats1993:??? Why? Those will most likely not have any licensing issues (well maybe some for Jet Set Radio due to the music) and Sega has always been a strong supported of this initiative. Two of those three are most likely high on the list and will happen barring any technical issues.

@Prats1993: Panzer Dragoon would be awesome, I miss that game. I used to play it when it first came out on Sega Saturn.

@Prats1993: Actually those may have a higher chance at making it due to the fact all of the companies involved in making those games still exist. It'd be a great way for Sega to make a little money selling some dormant IPs while also bolstering Xbox's lacking library of Japanese inspired content.

Games that are unlikely to make it would be something like The Suffering, Psi-Ops, or The TimeSplitters games as those companies are no longer in business.

Crimson Skies is a great start though. Hopefully Rally Sport Challenge 2 will get added. The 360 wasn't capable of running that game due to something to do with the scrolling technique Dice used on the title. Hopefully this is not the case with the Xbox one.

@billy90rickey: i like that game too , would have been great. Not many 360 titles were compatible at first either though and look at it now.

Let's face it, the majority of those games wouldn't get played anyway.

Yeah, that's pretty understandable as I would wager a lot of the publishers and developers from back in the day simply do not exist anymore so gaining rights to these games would not be impossible, but too hard to pursue.
