Microsoft E3 2017: Xbox One Backwards Compatibility For OG Xbox Games Won't Be As Extensive

"It won't be as big as Xbox 360, I'll tell people that."

Earlier this week at E3, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One's backwards compatibility lineup will add original Xbox games later this year. Don't expect the library of OG Xbox games playable on Xbox One to be as extensive as the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility lineup.

Speaking on Giant Bomb's live show tonight, Xbox boss Phil Spencer set expectations for the breadth of the library of OG Xbox games for Xbox One. He said the lineup will not be as large as the number of Xbox 360 games. Why? One part of it is the rights; it is more difficult to lock these down, Spencer said. And secondly, it is more technically difficult, Spencer explained.

No Caption Provided

"It won't be as big as Xbox 360, I'll tell people that," Spencer said.

The fact that the library of original Xbox games will be comparatively smaller than Xbox 360 is why Microsoft did not make as big a deal of OG Xbox backwards compatibility as it did when it announced Xbox 360 backwards compatibility at E3 2015.

There are only two OG Xbox games confirmed for the Xbox One's backwards compatibility library so far: Crimson Skies and Fuzion Frenzy. The program launches later this year. By comparison, there are more than 385 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility--you can see them all here.

@AncientDozer: Sounds as if MS want's to relicense for digital download rights as well. That's straight up dirty MS. If you can't get angrycreep's list (below) + Project Gothams and TRON 2.0 count me out of the upgrade. I'll stick with my PS4 and X360.

@Redsyrup: It's not that they want to, its that is the only way to make it happen. These new consoles weren't built to spin the disc for 5 hours straight, so download is the only option available.

@Redsyrup: They'd have to make sure the licenses were in order regardless of reselling them (and somehow that is a bad thing since discs will still work?) since none of them were licensed to be distributed on the One and the majority never licensed for ANY digital distribution.

Games I'd like to see are Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2, AD&D Heroes, Bloody Roar Extreme, Metal Dungeon, Jade Empire, Azurik, Onimusha, Otogi, A Bard's Tale, these are games I'd love to play again. Ever since my Xbox died, been missing these. :)

Gotcha, so more of that digital download crap. Still can't simply run my freaking disc as I should be allowed to. All these annoying negatives with this experience, Microsoft does not value consumer's bandwidth issues. Just let me run my freaking discs already!!!

@PStrife: The system was never designed to play ANY game from disc which is why we got the solution we did - something a lot of you seem to forget (PS4 is the same BTW). Sucks but that is the way it is, get better internet. Besides it is not like the original games were that large anyway (less than 5GB) so it should not be a big deal by any means.

@dlCHIEF58: "limited yes but still true BC"

Lol wut? The whole point is that if a console is truly backwards compatible than any game from the previous platform should work on the new console. This was true of the PS2, 3DS, Gameboy Advanced etc. You can't justify calling the Xbox One X a backwards compatible machine if only MS decides what games will be compatible.

@Prats1993: By definition this is 'true' backwards compatibility. It is not, however, FULL backwards compatibility. But Microsoft isn't promising full compatibility either. Backward compatibility only has to allow access to legacy hardware or software, it does not have to allow access to 100% of the legacy software available. Even if you had a launch PS3 there were some games that were not compatible, no one complained it wasn't true bc back then.

@Prats1993: And you forget that it is not possible to do it that way because the machine was never designed to run ANY game from the disc drive, same as the PS4. While not a perfect solution, it is better than nothing or what the competition is offering (which is paid or nothing). And BTW the definition of BC is being able to run the same game CODE on a different machine, the media is irrelevant. Finally Microsoft is not deciding, it is the publishers and developers that get to make the call.

@dlCHIEF58: If the media is irrelevant than why is the main complaint directed towards the PS4 the requirement to repurchase old games? Clearly the ability for a console to run an old game, which you already own on disc, is the primary draw of BC.

@Barighm: LOL, the complaint against SONY is that they are reselliing emulated PS2 titles (albeit with added features like uprezzing and trophy support) yet failing to support peoples past purchases of the same game, disc or digital. They pretty much have BC solutions in place, but they are charging people for it instead of doing their customers a service. THAT is why they get complaints.

@alaannn: Digital download rights mean relicensing/renegotiating contracts with the original publisher. If they just let us use our old discs they don't make $$$ off digital downloads. MS want's their cake and eat it too. These types of licensing deals are what killed AAA PSP games from being digital and Vita compatible.

@Redsyrup: Errr, you STILL can use your original discs FYI. Making digital purchases available (which is totally optional) allows people to buy them who have no access to those original discs or prefer not to use a disc. Options are so terrible and ruining the industry.

@alaannn: The Problem is that the Publishers never thought about that - they bought the Rights for Music for their games (for example) for 5 Years because they never expected a re-release over 5 years later.
Even more, some IPs had been sold oder expired - True Crime,Turtles and Stuff like that has new owners now and prevent others from re-releases.Thats why TMNT couldnĀ“t be sold on XBL/PSN anymore and even some DLCs of 360/PS3 Titles are missing today.

@alaannn: That is not always that easy: Some want (of course) Money, other had Artists who changed the Label and took the rights with them.

And then there are cases where nobody knows who got the rights - the planned new Turrican for example took Musician Chris HĆ¼lsbeck almost forever to find out where they went after the original Company was a goner because they were just a part of bigger deals.

@alaannn: That whould be extra work, more extra cost and a new release, including Ratings (ESRB,USK)...which means the Games could not played in LAN with older consoles, they get much more expensive and - in most cases - not worth the effort.

@alaannn: As I said: Its expensive - expensive egnough that some Devs didnĀ“t even release some games for the Wii U on Nintendos Marketplace in Germany for example because it wasnĀ“t epected to be worth it.
So overall the got to reprogram the game, need new expensive contracts, pay a lot of money for a re-release and canĀ“t expect to get anything out of it because only a small amount of people whould care.
If that all is possible MS whould take the effort for their own Games, hey they even pay the whold development of the emulation which isnĀ“t cheap, but I think that can not be expected from other companies. Those companies whould rather do a HD-Remaster,if the original data is still aviable (and sadly it is often not the case) and make more money with it.

@alaannn: Well, you can look around the Internet, the rating alone of PEGI/USK costs around 2000$.Matters how it is considered. A AAA-Game maybe has a chance to be sold egnough, but in most cases it will not be worth the effort.
.DonĀ“t forget: They got to reprogram a game which original data may be lost and it is not as easy as it sounds to just rip out some parts.

@alaannn: As someone who got some insight in Game-development I can say: No,that isnĀ“t easy.It depends on the data structure and the impact on the game itself, which could be fatal if its not reprogrammed...which alone costs a lot of money if the original Devs are not around anymore.
2000$ is only the Re-rating by the way - publishing costs may be carried by MS but if you got to program anything and still want the game to have a low price its not really worth the effort for a game that almost nobody will care about.
A HD-Remaster of a AAA-Title whould cost around 10K-50K and be more profitable since it gets more attention.

@alaannn: Then you should look at the data structure of some games, new or old. There are some games where every idiot can rip the music, but that doesnĀ“t apply to every games.Especially those from bigger companies. Some even crash without the proper datas in place - which means you have to reprogram some lines of the code, which leads to re-tests and if the original datas are lost (and thats more then often the case) it could end up being a pain in the arse.
Lets take Burnout Paradise for example: The game data is stored in a bunch of containers. You have 40 Music Tracks and one has to be removed. You got to get to the core data (you got to rip it from the original game),remove the song, remove it from the Ingame-playlist,remove it from the credits and every other clue that it was in the game.If it was played during special game-events you got to find a track that fits (maybe having the same runtime),reconsider every line of the Radio Moderator....itĀ“s not like every game has a simple Playlist.
So saying "it isnĀ“t hard" is a bit shortsighted.
The reprogramming alone can run into other legal issues, since it could be considered a re-release it doesnĀ“t have to cover some other licenses too.
As I said: In most cases it is not worth the effort.

@alaannn: Product placement is not the game itself, its commercial deals made with several other companies in the game itself. For example: In Splinter Cell Sam Fisher uses a certain Smartphone,in Mega Man Legends there was a Deal with a Lemonade Company only for the japanese Version,Sports and Racing Games are full of it.If the deals run out, they are not allowed to re-release the game without changing all the textures. If just ohne small thing whould not be removed they whould be sued their butt off and have to remove their game from the stores.

@alaannn: But the effort behind it is higher then the expected earnings,And that is the reason why some games didnĀ“t make it.It is too expensive and complicated. And those deals contain more then one Song in a game. Some Devs/Pubs even stated it in public.
And we are still just talking about the music - its just a small part of it.There is still product placement (which was in Megaman Legends a big problem),Engine-deals and other issues that can prevent them.
