Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days

Microsoft says its motion-sensing system is on track to hit 5 million units sold by year's end.

Hot on the heels of Nintendo's announcement that it had sold 1.5 million units of hardware over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft has struck back with some sales numbers of its own. Today, the software giant said that its Kinect motion-sensing system has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first 25 days on the market. The peripheral's milestone comes in the wake of a reported $500 million marketing campaign to promote the device.

2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.
2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.

Microsoft said the Kinect was on track to sell 5 million by year's end, in line with the company's previously announced target. The system went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European rollout occurring November 10 and its Japanese release following on November 20.

Currently, the Kinect system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $150, a hefty premium over the device's $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 loadout. All bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games that were released in November.

@mario-nin-freak the motion controller has a big part to play because I know a lot of people bought the Wii to play just dance or Wii sports, because the motion controller caught there eye but lets say kinect came out with dance central where you use your whole body other than the Wii. I played Just dance and i had to do feet motions and i didn't do it and i still got alot of points. Alot of people bought Wii because the motion controller caught their eye.

Great. with stuff like this people are just giving MS more of a reason to pump out this stupid motion gaming trend. Granted i have only tried Kinect Adventures in an instore demo, but i felt like the biggest freaking idiot while playing it. At least on the Wii i didnt look like a complete dumbass.

@Trevon05 doubt it, wi is popular in every age group, but not PS3 or xbox. And "motion controls" really has nothing to do with it.

@Trevon05 You mean the sales are now lower than PS3, that doesn't matter. it has sold almost double the amount that PS3 has, and wii's are usually used by more than one person a LOT more often than PS3, so more people more console means more people favor it;) Everyone already has a wii so noone needs to buy it anymore.

@mario-nin-freak My opinion is that it is top selling of the generation because it was the step in motion controlling but if all of them were released at the same time with the xbox having kinect and the ps3 having the move the stats would be different.

Well if it doesn't sell 5 million by Jan 1st then MS will have failed on their promise and less people will support it, it's make or break time, wonder how PS Move is doing???

Gamestop forcing consumers to buy Xbox 360 4GB Kinect bundle. I know because this happens to me. 2 days age I was at my local Gamestop to buy just Xbox 360 4GB(I was saving money for this) but the Gamestop employee said to me that they have only Xbox 360 4GB Kinect bundle and Xbox 360 4GB came next year. I try another Gamestop store yesterday and they said the same thing. So I guess this could be the reason Microsoft sold 2.5 million Kinect.

@mario-nin-freak I'm sure most people rather a PS3 or Xbox 360 over the Wii because the variety of the games are better and the graphics are better.

@Trevon05 well all that is your oppinion about what games you like, and what you like in games. Graphics to me have nothing to do with it, since it's only "pixels" that are better. and i like wii games SO much better, so that doesn't make it "technically" better but leads to the same thing I said, it's more than just motion controls.

@ Masterclass2006, Gamspot has already mentioned it in a different article. Also Sony didn't sell 4.1 million units they have shipped 4.1 million units. While Sony "shipped" that doesn't mean 4.1 million people have bought it.

@ maximumbarmage Oh yes it is all just a conspiracy, but I assume that the Move numbers are spot on? I know plenty of people who got Kinect. My sister had to search high and low to find on for my nephews. I guess you are just going to have to accept the fact that people are buying the Kinect. Just like a lot of people are buying the Move. People think it's interesting. plus when you got people doing things like << LINK REMOVED >> it's not hard to understand why many people would be interested.

This, Move and Wii sales have all been huge - I own all three consoles (the Wii just for Mario Galaxy really) but I won't get Kinect or Move until there is at least a hint of non-casual games. I think the rise of casual gamers is a good thing - great "hardcore" games will always exist anyway and it raises awareness. I was in a game shop earlier and heard 2 middle-aged parents discussing which game to buy their children for Christmas - they were surprisingly knowledgeable about most games.

It's pretty fun but useless to any serious games. As such I'm glad my cousin bought one, means I can play it without having to pay :D

Microsoft can claim all the numbers they like, but unless there's some sort of independent verifier for these figures, why should we believe them? You need only look at the poor sales of Kinect games to know something isn't adding up here, unless most of the buyers aren't buying any games for it, and while that may be understandable given how bad Kinect's software line up is, it also lends credibility to the suggestion Microsoft is quoting shipped figures here, not sell through as they claim. Truth will out sooner or later hopefully.

@okassar what you say is true but i remember when sony fanboys were saying the same thing about 360 sales, which had a whole year head start, and nobody wanted to hear it. kinda funny how things turn out.

Wow, these numbers are actually much higher than I expected. I thought people wouldn't like the concept of having no controller, but there seems to be this buzz that the Kinect is really hot technology with all the hacking going on, the 3D sensor, etc.. because of the tech appeal, the Kinect is going beyond just the Core willy-nilly gamer. It even sold out on Amazon even though the damn thing is $150. and Blisteredthumbs, do you realize that the Move was released September 15 while the Kinect was released on November 4? Fail. Oh ya, did you know people buy multiple Move controllers and they're all counted? Well, obviously. They're probably about tied in amount of unique buyers even though the Move had a month-and-a-half head start. For now the only game worth buying aside from Kinect Adventures which comes with the sensor is Dance Central. You hopefully won't have to wait long for better games to start rolling in, just don't drop $40 on shovelware.

@hememi Funny, i think the Kinect somehow looks like the old Eye Toy for the PS2. It is of course a lot better, with much more advanced tech. Makes fanboys like you seem like idiots huh?

I wonder how Xbox 360 unit sales have been boosted for the Kinect? I will be more interested in the Kinect when they release some "Real" games for it.

I'm planning to get one of the remaining 2.5 million that Microsoft hopes to sell by the end of the year. It seems like people are buying it, and better yet, having fun with it. I wish my living room was bigger, though...

@Funkbuffalo, It seems people are into that sort of thing. Kinect Sports, Kinectimals, and a few of the fitness games are good, too. The really interesting stuff is slated for 2011, though. Project Draco, Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, Codename D, and Haunt all have my attention.

I like how the Kinect is "an inevitable flop" and it hasn't even been out more than a month. Give me a break. Obviously the words of a fanboy. I have a Kinect and think it works pretty well. Love the voice activated controls. The launch titles are really hit and miss. Kinect adventures is kinda meh, but it included. Kinect sports is worth the buy...dance central is pretty good too. Also have tried Your Shape Fitness Evolved, which is a great workout software. If you have small kids, Kinectimals is a good buy too. Other than that, stay clear of the other titles. They aren't that great. Wait for the next wave of games. They'll be better. Stop ripping kinect just because you have a PS3 and want the Move to do better. Kinect will continue to evolve and the fact that it doubles as a camera and voice activation device eliminates the need to use remote controls at all. The titles will get better. Anytime a new device/console launches, the titles that go with it are usually not great.

why the need for negative comments on the kinect? If people enjoy it let them be. people will take a positive article and still try to belittle MS

@seriousplayer_d,no need to try it. its way over priced, there isnt no must have move games that i wont be able to play without it. i just bought a used black wii and 2 games for 80 bucks:P i might try it late next year when all the controllers come down in price, and if sony proves they will back it up with more then just tacked on motion control to games like kz3 gt5 ect ect.

...Sheesh, they're still pushing though it's an inevitable flop. EVERYONE, and i mean everyone i know that bought the Kinect, stowed it away in the basement once they got the Move.... Kinect = Impractical....Face it already. Btw, all these Kinect highlights is a sign of one big sinkin ship...I mean come on GS. Being biased is one thing, but throwing a parade around the Kinect like that with inexplicably unjustified scores given towards Move titles, which we KNOW they kick ass, is just perrrty low..... Sports Champion alone dumps the Kinect and its arsenal of exhausting and poorly designed games in the bin.
