Kinect preorders 'very low' - UK retailer

ShopTo calls for Microsoft to finalize motion-sensing peripheral at lower than widely rumored price, says customers aren't biting at current cost.

Microsoft confirmed a November 4 launch for its Kinect motion-sensing camera peripheral at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, but it didn't nail down a price for the device. Despite the lack of official word, US retailers began taking preorders for Kinect at $150, and while Microsoft declined to make the number official, it opened up its own preorders at the same price point. Now one retailer is saying that price is too high, and preorders have suffered as a result.

ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.
ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.

In an interview with Eurogamer, ShopTo CEO Igor Cipolletta told the site the number of Kinect preorders the retail chain has received is "very low." As for the pricing, ShopTo currently offers the Kinect for €153.75 ($188), while the executive pointed out that a Wii can be had for just a little more. ShopTo's online site is currently sold out of Nintendo's hardware, but the Wii Sports Resort bundle ordinarily sells for €166 ($203).

"It's too high," Cipolletta said of the Kinect price. "We believe that with this current economy it should be around £70 ($105)."

When Kinect arrives, Microsoft expects 15 games to launch alongside the device. First-party offerings include Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, and Kinect Sports. A number of third parties are also on board, developing such titles as EA Sports Active 2, Konami's DanceMasters, and Sega's Sonic Freeriders. Publishers have also promised postlaunch support, such as a Star Wars game from LucasArts, Q?'s Child of Eden, and THQ's UFC Trainer.

I'm honestly surprised, you'd think that the casual market (or most of it) would go bonkers for Kinect....

@cuchikapoor But you get more value with four controllers. The Kinect can only support two players maximum.

@ cuchikapoor, no its not because unfortunately you can only have two players at once, so its still cheaper to buy 2 controllers!

This is what Microsoft gets for wasting the technology on trying to copy the Wii in almost every shape and form. It's just as bad as Hollywood oversaturating theaters with unwanted sequels, remakes and 3D imagery. Shove it in our faces long enough and you'll experience resistance eventually. Try something more creative instead of drowning retailers with loads of unwanted motion sports and fitness "games" that we've been sick and tired of seeing for over two years. Or better yet, realize the fact that not everyone wants to jump around and flail about like a hyperactive Kermit the Frog on PCP when they play games.... This fail is well-deserved. I'll stick to my "normal" 360 games, thank you.

50 60 or even 70 then maybe ill be sold but 150... no way in hell! the parts dont even add up to the costs to make the thing! the controller players will own the people who use this because of the 1 second delay in movement!

You know, I wouldn't mind the fairly high price tag if there were actually any worthwhile Kinect games to be had.... but there aren't. In my book this is an EPIC FAIL from MS.

Microsoft has a history of radically overpricing its peripherals. I hope they figure it out soon or I'll buy me a ps3 because its options are cheaper. In fact the reason I chose 360 over ps3 originally was mostly the launch price.

I predict an epic failure for both. This is the history of gimicky add on's repeating itself.. I've been gaming since the early 70's and have seen this with Atari 2600, coleco vision, vectrex, and every other system that came out with some type of add on.. Rob the robot anyone?

I agree that the $150 price tag is up there. Rumored price for the Kinect was $80. More people would be on-board for it if that was the price. I think Kinect has great potential. Again, that all depends on the games. And so far I'm not truly geeked about any of the launch titles. For PS's Move bundle pack(controller/eye/sports champions) for $100 is a good deal. Also, I like the Sorcery demo they gave. Time Crisis will be fun. Think I'll give move a try as well. Will Kinect or Move be successful? Only time can tell.

At $150, only the people who were going to buy it at any cost will get it. At $99, you'll get the curious too. It's still a better deal and better tech then the Move.

Can someone please explain to me what "Killer Game" would actually work with this? I just can't see it. I love my PS3 and 360 but I just can't see my self playing with this. Need I remind everyone when MS released the 360 camera and those games that hardly worked. Totem whatever it was called.

Posted Jul 1, 2010 3:28 pm GMT So, the Milo thing was a scripted tech demo, confirmed fact that it supports 4 active players turned out to be another lie and the price tag is a whopping 150$... Plus all those 'wonderful' Kinect games they showed at E3! And then it's a surprise that retailers report extremely low pre-order numbers... I guess it would be fun to wave your arms around to navigate the dashboard, but to pay that amount of money for that... it's much cheaper and more effective to just press right or left with the analog stick. Oh well, keep digging your own grave, Microsoft. If it falls completely flat, then we just won't talk about it anymore, right. HD-DVD & bbc iplayer? What the hell were those... Never heard of that kinda stuff! Anyhow, Microsoft has got more than enough money to happily experiment with things like that. So they're probably not very worried.whether Kinect is one big f###up or not.

The Kinect= The Sega CD/32X of this generation. An overpriced last ditch effort to keep an aging console relevant for a few extra years. I can't say I'm surprised people aren't jumping on the Kinect Wagon. Until I see some legitimate effort in this, this is nothing but some gimmicky me-too hook by Microsoft trying to cash in on the Wii's success. You can pet animals and talk to your console for so long before you start questioning your well-being and existance. Those are very attractive launch games. Sonic Free Riders? The first two sucked balls. Why play that garbage when there are other, SO much better Sonic games on the way like Sonic 4 and Colors? No way in hell am I spending 150 bucks on a tacked on motion control gimmick when I already have a Wii.

Fun stuff... I have a few key issues with the technology, but this is from general experience. Calling banks and automatic phonelines, localisation is an issue, for example with my accent they find it difficult to recognise what I'm saying, and I don't fancy saying "Pause" 5 or 6 times before a DVD pauses. Also, "you turn around and it turns you around in the game" yeah thats great, I'm now not looking at the screen...what then? Joyride, spin round and your car spins round, in that time I'm essentially not looking at the screen, so whats the point? I can't see where I'm going at all. You're charging me HOW MUCH for a webcam?! I can plug any webcam into my ps3 and it has the same effect as an eyetoy. And the wii does motion control rather well considering. I still need to see any kind of proof that this is interesting to play.

Wait for it... when it flops, you'll hear it's because of X, Y, Z reason, rather than, "Well, no one really asked for this crap in the first place." Seriously, how much longer is the 360 going to be around this generation? We're about to end the cycle soon. The Kinect is just a tester for what the Xbox Whatever is gonna include.

grossly over priced, and on top of that some of the launch titles that are merley gimmicks are 59.99? ? nope. sorry, there is still a library of back logged games of non body waggle wiggle i've yet to play, and when i'm done with those, they'll be new releases i'll want to spend $60 dollars on. I'm not the only one that will find a reason to push this purchase off until the price becomes more suited for a gamers budget.

It's the poor to mediocre launch titles and the high asking price which is a direct slap in the face towards gamers that have killed the Kinect, If you want to get a casual motion-based console, Save up an extra 50 dollars and you could get a brand-new Wii, It might as well be dubbed as the "32x of console add-ons".

Too expensive and not enough advertisement. Simply won't do. If MS want this POS to sell they should be advertising it, along side suitable games on Nickalodeon and such channels. For the adult market they should advertise it on Living TV, and such channels.

They're making the same mistake the PS3 made during its initial launch -- too high a price scares away early adopters. Unlike the PS3, though, this is a peripheral that is likely to die and be forgotten. I think if they had gone for $99, it would have done better. Maybe they'll change their mind before making the price official. Otherwise, I think they'll be letting an interesting technology go to waste.

Why wouldnt you just get a wii? It has an installed base of games to play, and those games will likely be better than the launch offerings of this. If you dont have a 360, you are shelling 200-300 for that, then an extra 150 for this? Plus games? EPIC FAIL

supersonikk Posted Jul 1, 2010 7:11 am ET @madmanjim Kinect is aimed at casual gamers only (from the games we have seen and the way they present it). Move, Sony have made clear, is aimed at both casual and core gamers. Games such as SOCOM and Killzone 3 prove this. Just thought I'd point that out. I'm not really saying that I think either will be a success, though. ______________________________________________________________ Yeah it does seem kinect is aimed at family/kiddies. Personally I won't be buying either unless the Move comes in around the cost of a regular controller. Even still I cant see me playing an FPS with that and not getting my azz handed to me by someone using a regular dualshock. To me it seems both Sony and M.S. came a little late to the party with the Motion controls, but I guess they would be fools not to try and capitalize off of Nintendo's success.

Does anyone truly understand why technology like this are at those prices anyway? For example why PS3 was originally $600 and now Kinect is $150 (which is apparently to high O.o)
