Kinect preorders 'very low' - UK retailer

ShopTo calls for Microsoft to finalize motion-sensing peripheral at lower than widely rumored price, says customers aren't biting at current cost.

Microsoft confirmed a November 4 launch for its Kinect motion-sensing camera peripheral at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, but it didn't nail down a price for the device. Despite the lack of official word, US retailers began taking preorders for Kinect at $150, and while Microsoft declined to make the number official, it opened up its own preorders at the same price point. Now one retailer is saying that price is too high, and preorders have suffered as a result.

ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.
ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.

In an interview with Eurogamer, ShopTo CEO Igor Cipolletta told the site the number of Kinect preorders the retail chain has received is "very low." As for the pricing, ShopTo currently offers the Kinect for €153.75 ($188), while the executive pointed out that a Wii can be had for just a little more. ShopTo's online site is currently sold out of Nintendo's hardware, but the Wii Sports Resort bundle ordinarily sells for €166 ($203).

"It's too high," Cipolletta said of the Kinect price. "We believe that with this current economy it should be around £70 ($105)."

When Kinect arrives, Microsoft expects 15 games to launch alongside the device. First-party offerings include Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, and Kinect Sports. A number of third parties are also on board, developing such titles as EA Sports Active 2, Konami's DanceMasters, and Sega's Sonic Freeriders. Publishers have also promised postlaunch support, such as a Star Wars game from LucasArts, Q?'s Child of Eden, and THQ's UFC Trainer.

well to be honest the 360 is a casual gamer machine since even the new slim version over heats if played for too long at least it shuts itsself down but that means you have to wait hrs for it too cool properly how stupid

Hell even dropping it to $100 would convince me, or at least offering a game with that $150. As it is I don't think I'm willing to drop that much down for a piece of hardware.

I can't wait to spend my $150 on actual games that dont involve taking care of virtual pets... I don't want to spend my time doing chores when I could easily be tea-bagging people

I'm interested in kinect, but the $150 price tag will certainly keep me away. $50 is my magic number MS!

The sad thing is that it's not bundled with any games. I could understand the $150 price, if it was bundled with at least Kinect Sports or Adventures.

Well considering the majority of the major outlets are not taking pre-orders at the moment in the uk that makes sense, neither play or amazon have a price or pre-order option, just an email notification is available, so the two biggest online sellers in the uk have not started taking pre-orders and neither have te major retial outlets in my area, so it's easy to assume this news article has jumped the gun, while i personally do not think Kineckt will be a big success its way way to early too say pre-orders are low when only a few minor outlets are offering them, and i am just going off this article which only shows prices in euros so thats not a uk site, as i have yet to see a pre-order sign anywhere online or off for the uk, but i have only checked the major outlets.

@sharpsh0oter Yep. I don't see the point in this. Wii is the winner when it comes to how much it sold. So Sony create Move. Microsoft don't wanna fall behind either, so they make Kinect. What's the freakin point in this? I'm not gonna buy any of this crap. Not that the hardware isn't decent but I don't wanna play crap games. Seriously, I'm not into golfing or pretty much any sport that isn't climbing, swimming, throwing or basketball. But, I still find blasting zombies in an 18 rated game much more fun than those. Okay, imagine a cool martial arts/street-fighting type of game on Kinect, where you can kick, punch, headbutt etc. And a badass zombie survival game for Move, where you use both of the controllers for controlling each gun in your hands... now that sounds cool! I don't know about Kinect but at least there's already been one good-looking fighting game shown for Move at E3. Hopefully, there will be more games like that one for both Move and Kinect.

oh and 1 more thing if you look at the amount of promotion sony have done for the move like all the presentations they have done because i have watched loads of videos online for it before E3 and then compare that to microsofts its clear to see why more people know about ps3 move than kinect

The problem with connect is when it comes to games like shooing games, how are you going to change weapons, use inventory items, run, walk, walk round corners :S plus the hundred other things you can do with a controller they have hit a problem with driving games by the looks of forza as the car accelerates itsself and all you do is steer

@JJMikhail DVD may still be out-selling blu-ray, but blu-ray isn't exactly floundering either. The format has gained an awful lot of steam since 2006, especially now that they've been dropping in price rapidly. DVDs will reign simply because they're cheaper and much more accessible by everyone. However, on the gaming front, blu-ray will likely dominate the next generation. It'd be nice to say "good-bye" to multi-disc games entirely. :)

@Bamul, I know dude, my point is i dont think that people who already have a Wii will spend 400$ on an xbox to play casual games, and Ps3 or xbox fans will not buy this if there are no core games for Kinect. but I totally agree with U!

@JJMikhail The only reason the Xbox 360 didn't FAIL is because it has great games associated with it (looking at you halo). Kinect Joy Ride is not my idea of a truly great game.

This discussion as to how Kinect will "fail" is getting boring. I remember when the Xbox 360 came out all I heard was "too pricey" at £299 and that it will FAIL (yes that word again) because it doesn't have "many good games". Look at it now, the best online and multiplayer system for consoles by far and now one of the best selling consoles. For such a jump in technology, why anyone here has to make such ridiculous comments about price and quality as well as make comparisons to the Nintendo Wii where Kinect hasnt even come out as a complete and full product? Bear in mind that it isn't just about games... Maybe after more exposure pre-orders will rise (I have yet to see a full advert on the tele here in the UK on Kinect) and as for Blu-Ray, I don't see it beating DVD at the moment do you? Don't like the price don't buy it, plenty more who will...

@sharpsh0oter, the thing is, Microsoft and PS3 want MORE MONEY, so they tagret a bigger audience... with family games on Kinect and Move. Get it? More money = more happy Microsoft and Sony employees and more gamers pissed off.

This is stupid because people who wanted family games already have a Wii, that what is wii for. Xbox or Ps3 are for core gamers. Nobody with a Wii will buy a xbox or a Ps3 to eat the same ice cream with a different spoon!! just saying.

@yearof3000 Umm... Sony does not "own" blu-ray. They only fronted the format with the launch of the PS3. Blu-ray can be openly acquired by MS and Nintendo anytime they want.

Is anybody actually surprised? One, that price is way too high. Two, none of the releases look that great. The dancing one by Harmonix could be fun in a party type setting but spending $150 for Kinect and then $?? for the game is a complete ripoff. Microsoft is just being stupid.

Why would people be that excited for Kinect or Move for that matter? If you want motion-controlled family games, that's what a Wii is for.

@Justinge3 All I can say about your post is damn straight. Hardcore gamers actually need simple things. All we really want are fun and engaging games, not something that's going to encourage us to "Dance on Broadway" or play with a fake kinectimal. We all start somewhere I suppose...

the thing is they are listing kinect for £129 pound in the uk with no games, why in hell as kinect got no games bundled with it? the other problem is people who do not have an xbox360 have got to fork out for a console as well. for saying microsoft wants this to be the next big thing they are going about it the wrong way...

for a start the reason why preorders are llow is because there is no advertisment only online gaming sites like this so how are people and the large majority of familes going to know about this. in town theres a games shop with a smalll picture of kinect saying preorder its just a4 size :S so they cant complain about few preorders also microsoft needs to sort itself out there are 15 launch titles and they are all crap i dont like dance games and dont like sports games im sick of sports games since having the wii and just because you dont need a controller wont make spports games more fun to me

Kinect is fail. Why? Well there are two types of people, the casual and the "hardcore" (dont be lie "well what IS hardcore" because you KNOW it) Would a casual player buy a console like the 360 over the Wii for motion controls on poorly made game? NO. Especially since the 360+Kinect is more expensive that just getting a Wii so that their family can enjoy the low quality shovelware it has to offer. Would a "hardcore" (inb4nooneknowswhathardcoreis) player buy this to jump around the floor like a mentally challenged 5 year old. Of course not. Like me, we just want to sit down on our *** and PLAY SOME ****ing GAMES!
