John Wick Director On What To Expect From Spin-Off TV Show

Chad Stahelski speaks about The Continental, the upcoming John Wick TV spin-off.

A TV show based on the John Wick movies has been in development for some time now. The series, titled The Continental, was first announced back in 2017, and it's been a while since there was any news about it. However, it seems the series is still happening, and now John Wick director Chad Stahelski has spoken about what we can expect from it.

In an interview with Fandom, Stahelski explained that the show will have a much broader focus than the movies and will explore the assassins underworld in greater detail. "It's a different perspective on the whole world," he said. "It's coming from different characters' point-of-views and what the breadth of the world is.

"Whereas in John Wick I'm following one time period--literally almost a week in the life of one man, [where] everything spirals out of control--the angle the producers and the writers on the TV show are coming from [is] a very different timeline structure... about how deep the world goes."

"[It's] not just about assassins," he continued, "But everything that's included, and a lot of the origin stories of some of the characters that you see in Wick. It's a very interesting take on the Wick world, which I think is pretty cool. But it won't be from the John Wick perspective. Not that John Wick won't be involved in it, it's just not his perspective."

The Continental is being made by Starz. Last year, CEO Jeffrey Hirsch stated that the show would be unlikely to appear before the next movie, John Wick: Chapter 4. At that point, Chapter 4 was scheduled for a May 2021 release, but the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the movie's release date back an entire year to May 2022.

Last year's John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum grossed $319 million at the US box office, almost double what Chapter 2 made in 2017. There's also spin-off movie in development, titled Ballerina, which will focus on a young female assassin.

Stahelski is also working with John Wick star Keanu Reeves on the fourth Matrix movie. Stahelski and David Leitch, who co-directed the first Wick, worked as stunt coordinators on the original Matrix movies and have returned for The Matrix 4 to help director Lana Wachowski with some stunt sequences.
