Disney will release a new Indiana Jones movie in 2019, the company announced today. The fifth film in the iconic adventure series will open on July 19, 2019, starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. Disney also confirmed that the movie will be directed by Steven Spielberg, who helmed all four previous films.

Fans may also be happy to learn that Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, veteran Indiana Jones producers, will also be attached to the new film in the same roles.

"Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019," Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement. "It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven."

The new Indiana Jones movie does not yet have a title and while story details are also being kept under wraps. In addition, Disney did not share any details about when the movie would start shooting or what other actors will appear in it. Assuming the schedule remain intact, Ford will be 77 when the movie opens.

The last film in the series was 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Although the film was considered a disappointment by many fans, it grossed more than $786 million worldwide. Altogether, the Indiana Jones series has brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office across all four releases.

In a December 2015 interview, Spielberg said he could not imagine another actor portraying the legendary archaeologist.

"I don't think anyone could replace Harrison as Indy. I don't think that's ever going to happen," he said. "It's certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that's Harrison Ford."

When Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2012 for $4 billion, the House of Mouse not only acquired the rights to George Lucas' mammoth Star Wars series, but also the Indiana Jones franchise. The new movie was previously discussed in May 2015, at which time Kennedy said a script hadn't been written yet.

Thank god George Lucas won't be involved. Last I heard, he was making home movies for himself that no one else would see...sounds like porn to me.

Harrison Ford is old

You sure he doesn't need a cane? Or a wheelchair?

$5 says that Indy will fight his way onto a moving vehicle of some sort then not notice that the turn signal is still on at the end of the fight. ;)

@danielbirchal: political correctness wasn't the problem with the last one. The "let's shove Scientology propaganda down everyone's throat" was the issue.

@duckofdeath: Not the problem in the last Indy, but a huge problem in the last star wars. Since both are on Disney's hands, political correctness can be real problem.

I actually thought the last film was passable.... until it completely jumped the shark. This new film would be well served by some restraint on the plot and the CGI. There's decent source material and talent there

@xantufrog: It had some good stuff. Worth watching once - which is way more than, say, Highlander 2.

No. No! Nooooooooooo!!!!!! No no no no no no no no no no no no! Oh, sweet Lord in Heaven, if you're really there, then please, please, please no. You want a soul in exchange for shutting this terrible idea down, Satan? I'm willing to hedge my bets. Future time travelers? Forget shooting Hitler; stop this atrocity instead. Somebody, somewhere, please. Oh, the humanity. Think of the children! Won't anybody think of the poor children?

You can count on Disney to milk these series for all they are worth. I predict that they will drive the Indiana Jones series into the ground, just like they are doing with Star Wars.

Seriously Ford is 75 years old looked like he was about to keel over in the Star Wars remake.

@guyondainternet: Probably why they did what they did in Episode 7. Indiana Jones could be his last film for all we know. Harrison has had a great run.

@fig56: They'll probably make a story that includes his "retirement" so to speak and sets things up for a new person to take over in case they want to keep making more movies. But yes he is quite old so I wonder if that setup will be right from the start of the movie and we'll have both him and the new character working together somehow.

Ok he was 65 in the last one now he is 73 the only way I can see this working is if they made it like the last crusade except he takes the Sean Connery approach

Expect to see heavy product placement for AARP and The Scooter Store. Ol' Indy might even have a side job as a pitchman for reverse mortgages.

Well at least Paul Feig isn't working on this, he'd cast Melissa McCarthy as the lead role and title it Indiana Jane and the Twinkie of Doom.

I have to say this is way better than their earlier idea. Recasting this iconic role would be like remaking a classic which Hollywood would never.....oh wait.

Do we need yet another one? Yes, Spielberg is a much better director. But we don't need more movies about it.
