"High-Power" PS4 Model Something Sony Might Consider, Exec Says Hypothetically

Right now, it's just talk, but executive Masayasu Ito says it's an idea that Sony hasn't ruled out.

311 Comments

Sony might consider offering a "high-performance" model of the PlayStation 4, a system that the company has already repeatedly referred to as the "world's most powerful console." That's according to Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Masayasu Ito, who was asked for his thoughts in a new interview about offering a new PS4 model with better performance sometime down the road.

No Caption Provided

Speaking with Japanese gaming publication 4Gamer, as translated by DualShockers, Ito said because the PS4 uses X86 architecture (unlike the PlayStation 3's Cell processor), improvements to performance can be made over time. However, Ito stressed that Sony has no immediate plans to introduce a technically superior PS4 model; he also explained that the bigger question is if Sony would actually want to do this at all.

Offering a beefier PS4 model would conceivably split the PS4 audience, which doesn't sound like something Sony would want to do at this stage with the PS4 enjoying such strong sales and momentum. Whether or not Sony would have some solution to fracturing its audience remains to be seen. It's also important to note that Ito was speaking hypothetically after he was asked a direct question. Still, he said releasing a higher-power PS4 model alongside the existing one is an idea that "might be considered."

Consoles do not typically receive major updates of this nature. Revisions historically come in the form of things like better energy use and smaller overall form factor, while technical performance usually remains locked from the start of the console generation to the end.

GameSpot has reached out to Sony for additional comment on the matter. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.

There is some precedent, however, in the portable gaming world. In 2014, Nintendo released a New Nintendo 3DS model with improved CPU performance that it sells alongside the regular model. This beefed-up system plays all Nintendo 3DS games and many from the Nintendo DS and DSi libraries; some games, however, are playable only on the New Nintendo 3DS, as they leverage its increased power.

Would you be interested in a PS4 with improved performance? Let us know in the comments below.

Let's say they pulled this, then what is gonna happen to other ps4 owners? What should they do with their inferior consoles? Is it gonna be any plan for people to trade their consoles with Sony? I mean handing over the inferior one and getting the new one through paying a small a mount of money like 100bucks or something?

Look, just make PS5 earlier than expected, and make it 100% fully backward compatible. People are willing to spend stupid money on upgrading their mobile/cell phones every god damned 18 months to two years...and for what? A SLIGHTLY better camera? Gamers are maturing, and so are their disposable incomes. Considering the mobile phone market, it won't exactly be front page news if the ps4/xbox one get replaced after 4 years. Also, the crossover games for this/last gen are working well. That can be done again. We're two years since the PS4 release and the latest Call of Duty is still about to be released on PS3!!! Just do the exact same thing again in two years time, but take advantage of X86 and make PS5 FULLY BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE. That would solve so many problems.

As a side note, theres no chance of hitting 4K. Just make PS5 1080p, 60fps, no problem with absolutely b*tching AA and effects. It will look incredible. Give me The Elder Scrolls 6 as a launch title and I'll send Sony my local bank branch on the back of a lorry as payment.

@soulrebel:

PS5 is just a name. The chosen hardware architecture allows scaleability so whether its called PS5 or PS4 Elite it's the same. But when you change the number of a console generation, the games change as well. That would leave a lot of gamers behind who cannot play the game, so it's better to go with a PS4 Elite.

I agree, 4K has little benefit to gamers and would be a waste of resources.

@justerthought: 4K is the future, I already own a 4K Tv and games look like ass already on PS4. So, PS5 better be 4K or I won't get one.

I know most console people don't really understand the hardware, but this is a simple one:

The amount of VRAM the console has is pretty much irrelevant to its performance. VRAM will really only let them use higher resolution textures, it won't make the console render frames any faster.

The main problem is the XONE and PS4 have already hit their limit. All they can do is optimize the games now. This is x86 architecture that has been around forever, this isn't proprietary hardware like was seen on previous consoles.

There is nothing "hidden" or "unlockable" here. What you see now is what you see 5 years from now. All they can do is optimize the game to perform better and thus allow for better visuals at the same framerate.

I have both an XONE and PS4, and i can only see 3 outcomes:

1) They do nothing and prolong this generation another 3-5 years with games never really looking that much better than the first couple years.

2) They release slightly more powerful consoles of the same generation that only some games will make use of so that they don't completely split the playerbase. (This would drive console gamers towards PC gaming since it would essentially be a severely overpriced a sh#t-tier upgrade).

3) They introduce the next gen in 2-3 years that is VR capable.

Number 3 is the most likely to me. Next year nvidia Pascal is coming out, which will be magnitudes of order more powerful than the current gen of video cards. Consoles will benefit from this as well, where a console equivalent of a pascal GTX x60 will outperform a $1200 GTX Titan or 980 Ti.

Yeah, I'd be interested if Sony allowed some sort of old for new trade in on it. You know 'this is for the players' and all that.

PS4.5 would make no economic sense. I think it would be better to make this generation of console a short cycle unlike last gen. 5-6 years would be adequate to ensure that funds were recuperated and enough funding was available to produce the PS5. To change the specs of its current device would be a PR disaster, to release something which current models would be able to upgrade with should they choose to go down this route however would be the best way to go if they have to.

@gotrekfabian:

The rules of a console life cycle don't apply here because the PS4 architecture is scaleable unlike previous generations. Sony don't have to jump a generation to increase quality. They can simply produce a PS4.5 or PS4 Elite. That is the way to go.

@justerthought: It would make consoles the same as PCs, and kill the console industry if they released PS4.5.

You remove unified performance on consoles you remove all need for consoles. Just get a PC instead and pirate everything for free. What would be the difference?

@StokeMeAClipper:

Why? You got what you paid for. But if you want better you are going to have to pay for it. You will still be able to use your current console no problem, so your investment is protected. Sony could produce the PS4 Elite alongside the PS4 standard so you have the choice.

Why restrict everything to the lowest common denominator. It's just sour grapes and does not make sense. That's like saying if you buy a new Sony TV, Sony cannot bring out a newer model that is better 6 months later because you just bought the previous one. Product manufacturers are doing that all the time. It's progress.

@justerthought: It is very simple. People that buy a console are investing in a platform. Selling a more powerful version of the PS4 totally undermines the point of buying a console in the first place. It would simply divide the player base.

Those that are happy to upgrade regularly would be better off getting a PC.

Makes sense to me. Kinda like a PS4.5, it could play games at 4K@60fps while the "old" PS4 plays the same games at 1080p@60fps. The customers get to play the same games just with more or less graphical quality.

I really hope they're not doing this, I already waited almost 2 years for the 1 TB model... Maybe it's not financially possible, but all console manufacturers should just make sure the next-gen (9th) consoles are top tier machines...

# This is just a publicity stunt by Sony to get some press before the holidays. This is just utterly absurd to even think that people are dumb enough to believe this. Sony has no reason to upgrade specifically the APU on the console to make it more powerful graphically. Think people! This just isn't smart business. Sony is ahead in the console race. Why would they dump more money and resources into development of a new upgraded PS4? One reason is Sony doesn't have the money to pump into a product that is already selling. The smart decision is to pump money into development of the new PS5. Either way this is obviously a fantasy to get all the Ponies excited. The only upgraded version anyone will see is probably a PS4 with more hard drive storage. I give this console lifespan 2 years.

@maxumusz:

You are wrong. Sony have urgent reasons. For example, the internal hard drive is a ticking time bomb. It's too small and gamers right now have reached the point where it's full. They are avoiding buying games because they don't have the space and don't want to delete their favourite games. Sony makes it's money from game sales not hardware sales. Now do you see the problem.

Any company that stands still and get complacent on current success will suffer in the future. Just look what happened to MS getting smug about the 360. The lame XB1 is the result.

You ended your comment by claiming the PS4 will only have a 2 year lifespan. That means you are confirming I am right. The PS4 architecture is scaleable so Sony don't need a lifespan generation leap to increase the quality. A PS4 Elite or PS4.5 could be released 2 years into the lifecycle, contradicting all the fanboy sour grapes your comment.

I think it will just create more confusion regardless of how it's done. It will lead to the same questions out of the loop pc noobies wonder. Plus if the cost is too much it will only be bought by hardcore/elite gamers just like that new elite controller.

If they were going to do power upgrades, that should have been designed in from the first, a modular system. With easy swapping in and out of parts.

1.Buy highly moddable system at launch which is the standard.

2.Let users upgrade whatever they want. Ram, x86 cpu, hardrives, gpu,usb ports, etc.

All games play on the standard system, with enhancements increasing framerates, less load times,etc.

I don't understand why console devs don't learn from Nintendo with the N64 Expansion pack. Added 4MB of ram to the system. Laptops now-a-days can benefit from an external GPU. These type of things would benefit the console industry. It would allow gamers to get smoother game play and make the developers a lot of money without having to make people repurchase the entire system over again.

Two models would split the market nobody would make games for the more powerful model because the userbase would be a joke compared to the older slower PS4 models.

Consoles rely solely on userbase, developers couldn't care less if your system is power or not, its all about the attach rate.

Sony should just make a PS5 if they wanna upgrade, rather than splitting the current userbase.

It wouldn't make sense. Developers would be pissed having to put more money into development for 2 versions of a game, game prices would potentially go up...they have too big an install base to do this. Makes no sense to mess with what they have going, financially it would be stupid. I think Yoshida's jaw hit the floor when he heard this one. Huge mistake even mentioning something so dumb.

Just like an upgrade from iPhone # to #S model. Free upgrade? What world do we live in? Nothing is free and everything is just a Beta to the next ligit "Real Thing". PC's have upgrade potential based on hardware/driver capablitilies and they all play the same games. Just different settings. Consoles won't be far off from that option sooner or later. Its evolution baby, Yeah!

No reason why I guess this couldn't be done. The newer PS4 would have developers programming to get the most out of it, and then like the PC (as its the same architecture), the older PS4 naturally scales down the content with lesser textures, etc etc

Not the best move, the PS4 sales ain't happening because it's a powerhouse. It's not and it isn't. It's because PlayStation have delivered a worthy pricetag on a console that runs much better than the PS3, and because they know it'll get a ton of exclusive titles.

They would be smart to keep it a secret up until the week it comes out, if possible. They shouldn't remove the disc tray & I doubt it'll get smaller unless they're not planning two games on one disc. They may just make it for backwards compatibility back to ps1 with a new elite controller. Stronger CPU/GPU is hard to deny as interesting if it comes sooner than later, but all ps4 games must be playable on all ps4s. Release it in the same week the next gta comes out. No I'm joking that would take forever. Titanfall 2 sounds good & sooner though.

How would some of your fans react when they realize that they CANT play a game at 1080p/60fps while those that bought an enhanced version can ? So basically we were all guinea pigs for you to experiment on and when it failed you just moved on.

Okay....if you're going down that road,then give us all a refund.Because basically what we all bought at launch was an inferior dumbed down version of what was actually a next-gen console.I can't believe they're betraying us like that.First it was just video games with their ripped out content and now the hard-ware is taking that path.

... And they call this a next-gen console. It's not even current-gen, it's more like past-gen (because a 7 years old stock laptop can be as powerful).

This gen is such a joke, that's why we're only getting remakes and remastered editions instead.

Make no mistake, we're in past-gen 1.5.

If sony did do this, I would throw my ps4 in a woodchipper, or sell it (if that would even be possible) and buy an xbox.

I'm not a fanboy of either company. I'm a bang for my buck kinda person.

I didn't spend 400 bucks on this console so I would have to pay more later.

A beefier sounds nice in all aspects, except the fact of how much consoles and games cost already. This is no better than what destiny is doing to its players.

so it would come down to two options:

Pay more and feel stupid as you already own a ps4

Choose not to upgrade and live with the fact you paid $400 bucks for an inferior console.

Gaming companies have become disgusting.

Yep, saw it coming. It's something we've seen for a while with Apple and their iPhones getting a yearly update and it's the new business model to release gradual updates instead of one big improvement. Nintendo caught on with their N3DS and I bet Sony and Microsoft are working on theirs next. Especially now that consoles are compared to PC enough to create some hefty competition, I definitely see Sony and Microsoft releasing yearly or bi-yearly models to compete with the advance in computer hardware. I'm personally not a fan of this strategy, but it's what keeps a consistent money flow and you can't argue with that.

This kind of brings back memories of the 32-X add-on for the Sega Genesis. It gave the Genesis more power, but the add-on wasn't well supported, and the games just weren't there. Most people remember it as a placeholder until the Sega Saturn came along.

The only way a "power" PS4 would be viable is if there were new exclusive must-have games that couldn't be played on the standard model - sort of a PS4.5.
