Halo Infinite Lead Addresses Battle Royale Rumors

It sounds like the only BR that Halo Infinite will have is the Battle Rifle.

Will the Halo franchise follow the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield into the battle royale space? A video from noted Microsoft insider Brad Sams recently claimed that 343 was breaking ground on a battle royale mode for Halo Infinite. Franchise boss Frank O'Connor has now responded on ResetEra, saying that the multiplayer modes aren't locked in yet but battle royale isn't in the cards.

"We will not talk about the launch content of Halo Infinite until we're ready," O'Connor said. "I haven't watched the video so if I am misinterpreting the headline as 'Halo Infinite is launching with/as a Halo Battle Royale mode' that is still not the case," he said. "You can probably make your own Battle Royale mode in Forge even right now though. It's a mode not a genre. And all the variants out there now are in my opinion quite radically different from my perspective. Apex vs Fortnite is chalk and cheese--one focuses on movement and map traversal and the other on building and budgeting. Like CTF. BTB Super Fiesta (for example) contains a lot of the shenanigans and emergent fun of that kind of large experience but big sandbox modes are not Battle Royale any more than Oddball is CTF."

Now Playing: Halo Infinite Boss Rules Out Battle Royale Mode - GS News Update

O'Connor joked that Halo Infinite will still have BR--the Battle Rifle, that is. And while Halo Infinite may not have a battle royale mode, O'Connor teased that 343 is looking into "big social modes with loads of organic shenanigans."

"The launch modes for MP are not 100% defined and are subject to change till quite late in the process--but Battle Rifle will still be there," he said. "So you can have BR. But are we interested in big social modes with loads of organic shenanigans? Yes. Specifically A blimp full of survivors heading to an Island after a (metaphorical) lecture from Beat Takeshi? No. We are NOT doing this as of now--and no plans to--but Battle Royale could be made for any of the Halo games in MCC or [Halo 5] with some content and scripting additions, because it is a mode. It would have limits based on each engine. I'm pointing that out to be clear that it's one of the ways we think about gameplay possibilities rather than a single direction for a title."

Brad Sams, who has accurately reported on many unannounced Xbox endeavours, may be accurate in stating Microsoft has done some work on a Halo battle royale game. Game development is highly iterative. So it might be possible that 343 experimented with battle royale and decided not to pursue it further. Given the enduring appeal of the battle royale genre, it makes sense that Microsoft would at least consider a battle royale mode for Halo Infinite.

The Call of Duty franchise added battle royale with Black Ops 4's Blackout mode, while Battlefield V's battle royale mode is called Firestorm. These are modes within the games, not standalone experiences like popular free-to-play battle royale games like Fortnite and Apex Legends.

Also in the Sams video, he claims a new trailer for Halo Infinite is being prepared for E3 this June. That would be no surprise, as Halo is one of Microsoft's tentpole franchises, and we've already heard that Halo Infinite will be part of the show. He also responded to the recent claim that Halo Infinite has a $500 million budget. He said he's heard that the actual budget is "in that region." Given the sizeable investment, Sams added, "Careers will be made or broken on [Halo Infinite]." As Sams understands it, the reported $500 million budget would cover game development and development costs associated with the brand-new engine, Slipspace, that Microsoft created for Halo Infinite. It's unclear if marketing costs are included.

A spokesperson for Microsoft told GameSpot about the $500 million budget, "We do not comment on speculation and rumor."

Halo Infinite is in development for Xbox One and PC; a release date hasn't been announced yet.

In other Halo news, it was recently announced that Orange is the New Black and American Gods actor Pablo Schreiber will play Master Chief in the Showtime Halo TV series. GameSpot and Showtime are owned by CBS.

I feel like you could make aa BR mode with forge and custome games already. If not thhen 343 should just make it where you can in Halo Infinite.

Spot on. It is a mode, not a genre.

@ballashotcaller: yeah i remember playing a match of 1 life deathmatch in blood gulch in halo pc like 15 years ago. playing pubg for the first time didnt seem that special after experiences like that. everyone running for sniper rifles, rocket launchers and shotguns but trying to not get seen or die once

besides spartans are supposed to be mega soldiers even if they are stripped from weapons and evrything. so the upgrading and looting part doesnt make that much sense

though on the other hand it means that br would be pretty easy to add. just make players spawn in pelicans like some people have wished for 20 years. everything else is already doable. spawn players with the crappiest gun and 1 life

That's the same kind of response O'Connor gave regarding Halo 3 after Bill Gates announced it, so, yes, it's true.

At this point, I think it’s a tactic for developers/publishers to not include a BR mode at launch so as not to have the BR haters boycott, and to then add it later post launch.

Gaming habits repeat. This is a constant.

See Destiny2 & Battlefront 2

On the Halo front 343 Studio has been a major letdown with Halo 4 & Halo 5.

*The constant is STate of Decay2, Sea Of Thieves and Crackdown 3 have all been too

boring to play or have had major gripes by gamers.. I was letdown by all 3 and letdown by Both Post Bungie Halo games.

Even the Master Chief Collection was stale when I bought it....

I want to defend Xbox but there's some serious issues rushing or releasing imcomplete games.

And here comes 343 late to the party as always. If you think 4 or 5 are any good, YOU are the problem.

@doa2169: I thought 4 was fun, but 5 was pure garbage in my opinion.

If YOU disagree, that IS fine.

@doa2169: It depends on what you mean by good. Parts of them were great. Halo 4 had a great campaign, but its MP was just ok. I get what they were trying to do though. They were trying to change things up because people were complaining that it didn't change enough from previous games but in turn in turned too much in a COD clone. Now with Halo 5, the campaign was fun but the problem is that no one cared about Locke so it sucked that you played so much of him and not the MC as everyone wanted. The MP of 5 was amazing though, and I'm saying that as someone who doesn't even like MP. Warzone Firefight is probably one of my favorite modes ever.

@doa2169: Halo 4 was one of my favorites. Halo 5 was good, but definitely wasn't the best. It was still a very fun game and one I enjoyed playing through a few times. If I had to make a list starting with my top it would go 2, 3, 4, Reach, 1, 5, ODST.

I am looking forward to a new Halo!

Why do people want this mode in every game? Just call it the old fashioned king of the hill. I think it is right that they do what they want rather than "most" "players" want(I'm not included in most). If they want that mode then they should stick to those games that has it.

Cellphone gaming and BR, time to trash it.

@senergy: I would just slightly edit that to say, "there are too many games that ONLY have a Battle Royale mode."

Even Fortnite is way past being a BR-only game (not even including the better-than-ever STW campaign). There has been a fixed slot for big-team battle modes with respawns and only high-tier guns since December, and it plays like the Unreal Tournament modes of old now.

Their new "planes and lava" mode is the most fun air combat game since Crimson Skies.

Even BF5 and COD correctly treat BR like a separate mode.

I wouldn't mind it as an option, but I don't want Halo's MP's main focus to be a BR mode. It is a good point though that it can just be made in forge.

Not a BR fan in particular, but the mode is undeniably popular, and 343's unwillingness to include it in Halo just speaks to how tone-deaf they are to what gamers want. I really want the next Halo installment to be great, but there's nothing in 343's history (other than perhaps the anniversary edition of Halo 2) that suggests that they won't turn out another clunker.

@kgrierson: I took his response the other way, that it's definitely a possibility and they aren't ready to reveal anything yet.

@kgrierson: ha yup,

I just said that in my initial post about 343..

That company doesn't believe Halo 4 + 5 we're faillures because they sold well.

They only sold because most 30 +40 year olds fondly remembered it from childhood.

ugh the arrogance.

A $500 million budget?!!!

Who says games aren’t big business. In regards to the whole battle royale mode, I’m still a little confused as to O’Connor’s comments. It sounds like Halo: Infinite won’t have them (at least in the traditional sense.) but on the other hand it sounds like he isn’t closed to the idea of not implementing them potentially at a future date; if not, something that builds upon the usual tropes of where battle royale games currently are at.

Guess we will have to wait for E3 (AKA: The Microsoft show, lol.) to see how things eventually unfold.
