GTA Online, the multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto V, just keeps growing. Rockstar Games has announced that GTA Online was a record-breaking year for the game, reaching a new all-time high for players during the year. It's a wildly impressive achievement given that the game originally released back in 2013.

The milestone came during a year that saw Rockstar release the Cayo Perico Heist for GTA Online, which represented the biggest-ever update for the game.

Rockstar also shared that more than half of GTA Online players who tried out the Cayo Perico Heist did so alone. This was the game's first Heist that allowed players to go solo.

Red Dead Online, the multiplayer mode for Red Dead Redemption 2, also had a strong 2020. In December, the game saw a record-breaking number of returning players and new players, no doubt fueled in part by the release of Red Dead Online's standalone edition. Rockstar said Red Dead Online welcomed the most players to the game since Red Dead Online's beta launched in 2018.

As a thank-you to players, Rockstar is giving GTA Online and Red Dead Online players a collection of freebies.

Red Dead Online:

  • Everyone who logs in by February 15 gets the following:
  • Free horse (under rank 40)
  • Free stable slot
  • 5,000 Club XP
  • 2 ability cards
  • Free coat
  • Free hat (rank 15 and under)
  • Free shirt (rank 15 and under)
  • Free fast travel voucher
  • Free High Velocity ammo for all gun types
  • Horse Reviver
  • Assortment of tonics and other consumables

GTA Online

  • Everyone who logs in by February 12 gets a free Rockstar Cap and Rockstar Rolling t-shirt

Rockstar isn't done supporting both games, either, as the company told fans to "stay tuned" for more updates for both titles later this year. This will include "new employment opportunities" for solo players in Red Dead Online, along with opportunities to earn more gear and GTA$ in GTA Online.

GTA Online is set for another big year in 2021, as Rockstar is releasing a standalone edition of the game, while GTA V is headed to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
