That's not all, as the standalone version of GTA Online launching in 2021 will be free for PlayStation 5 owners during the first three months of its release. It's not completely free, however, as a PlayStation Plus membership is required.

It's no surprise that Rockstar and Sony are teaming up for these exclusives, as the two companies have had a long history of working together on Grand Theft Auto and other projects. At E3 2014, Rockstar announced the PS4 version of GTA V during Sony's briefing. Before that, Sony announced a deal with Rockstar to release a new spy game, Agent, exclusively on PS3--but it was never released. More recently, Sony and Rockstar teamed up to give Red Dead Redemption 2 players exclusive content.

GTA V is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021 alongside the standalone GTA Online game for both systems. The new version of GTA V will have a "range of technical improvements, visual upgrades, and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the latest hardware."

The game was originally released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, before coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and now the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The game is a sales juggernaut, with more than 130 million copies shipped. The GTA Online mode brings in lots of money from microtransactions.

Also during Sony's PS5 reveal event, the company finally showed off the console's form factor and announced there will also be a digital-only version of the system.
