Gran Turismo Movie Takes Inspiration From Top Gun: Maverick With "Real Actors, In Real Cars"

Sony Pictures wants the Gran Turismo film to feel like a highway to the danger zone. Director Neill Blomkamp has touted the physicality and stunts in the upcoming car thriller, taking a page from Top Gun: Maverick.

Speaking with Empire, Blomkamp said Gran Turismo features "real actors, in real cars, on real race tracks, driving insanely quickly." But the director, who previously helmed Chappie and Elysium, also wants the video game film to focus on characters, too.

"The north star for me was to make a video game title with character work that propels the movie, even more so than the racing," said Blomkamp. "Although the racing is bloody intense, too."

Gran Turismo is based on a true story of a British teenager named Jann Mardenborough who went from super gifted at the racing game to actually behind the wheel as a professional race car driver. Above you can see a picture of Archie Madekwe portraying Mardenborough alongside Stranger Things actor David Harbour as Jack Salter. Orlando Bloom also stars in the upcoming flick.

Sony has been ramping up PlayStation Productions, which brings video game franchises to TV and film. The Last of Us was a giant hit for HBO as the show averaged 30 million viewers for each episode. Other projects include a Twisted Metal series at Peacock and a God of War show over on Amazon Prime.

Gran Turismo will premiere August 11 in theaters.
