God of War PS4 Director on the Challenge of Making People Take Kratos Seriously

Plus, how leaks impacted the development team.

After multiple leaks, Sony Santa Monica finally revealed a new God of War game for PS4, but what we saw was a far cry from what we expected. The newest entry in the series makes a number of departures from its tried and true formula, most notably by adding a companion character for Kratos.

The introduction of Kratos's son is indicative of a shift in tone, an attempt to reframe the character as a father trying to guide his son away from making the same mistakes he did. This, director Cory Barlog admits, is a challenge, particularly given the character's history as a brutish, bloodthirsty slayer of gods.

We discussed this, and more, with Barlog during a quick interview at E3 2016. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's feature about everything you missed from the God of War PS4 trailer.

You must be really excited about finally showing the game.

Yes, I'm riding high on being able to talk about this, but also last night [Sony's press conference] was amazing.

We'd seen concept art for something rumoured to be a new God of War through leaks, and yet what was shown was still so far off what we expected. Did you feel confident that people wouldn't see your reimagined God of War coming?

I would love to say I was confident, but I think there were many moments of doubt and fear. I don't know if anybody noticed since but that Shinobi602 guy [that leaked the announcement] had actually said "to the halls of Valhalla, my boy," but nobody picked up on that thank god because I was really worried that would get out there early.

It's never fun to have that stuff leak out. The biggest thing is that it's work-in-progress stuff, which we would pass around and say, "That's not approved, that's not good." That character [that leaked] wasn't representative of anything anywhere near what our artist did on [new] Kratos. Seeing that version out there was very tough. At the end we knew we'd be able to show him.

People kind of felt that Ascension would be the last time we see Kratos, even more so when the Norse mythology theme was leaked. Why did you bring him back?

Personally I find it an interesting challenge as a storyteller to take a character that you've taken very close to the darkest of dark sides, then see if you can pull that character back. Kratos is someone that has repeatedly made the wrong choices, but what happens if he makes other choices? In the beginning there was some talk about not bringing back Kratos, and maybe we should look at other protagonists. But then look at Mario, nobody on the internet is saying, "Another Mario game with Mario? C'mon guys." Kratos is intrinsically tied to the brand and the world. The idea of this immortal tragic figure being forced to walk the Earth forever as his punishment.

It's like the punishment of Vic Maccy at the end The Shield. I'm going to spoil that. Killing Maccy would have been a mistake, but putting him behind a desk was amazing. That took the essence of the character and put him in the most torturous position, with his gun hanging over there and him behind a desk with a suit. This is a similar thing, but instead of torturing Kratos we're putting him in a situation where he has to constantly fight the nature that he let loose so freely in the greek era.

One of the challenges you now face, after multiple games of this guy brutally killing everything is getting players to take him seriously when he's being sincere. All they've seen is Hulk, so when you bring out Bruce Banner, it's a weird turn.

Yes, we want to show you don't have Banner without Hulk and you don't have Hulk without Banner. The god and the human side coexist within him and he let out that rage for a long period of time, but we're trying to find the motivation to change within him, and actually get people along for the ride for that change. It's like Arrow Season 1 and Season 2, from brutal killer to struggling in situations where he's being forced to kill.

Deliberately, I went for that Buffy Dawn reveal; one day everyone was calling Dawn "sister" and they didn't explain it was a spell for like three episodes. I like that--enter the scene late and get people in, pull the bandaid off quickly and put him into situation where you see him struggle. He gets upset, but pulls it back, he doesn't let the kid get in the fray, but then gives him an opportunity and the kid screws up. It's all anchored in real human experiences we've had. Probably not fighting trolls or shooting lightning but my dad was holding a piece of wood and a nail and I hit him on the hand with the hammer. It was the same thing where I was like, "Oh man, sorry," and he was all, "Don't say anything."

To what extent does Kratos's son factor into gameplay?

We aren't doing precise finite control. You don't ever have control over the movement of the kid. He finds his own way, he splits the battlefield and focuses on specific things, as you upgrade him he gets better and will do things automatically. But there's a specific button dedicated to the kid and in combination with the free-look camera, he will attack wherever you're looking. So that guy approaching you, he can fire a couple of lightning arrows on your command. Other times he'll fire them just to split the battlefield and keep the combat going. Sometimes he can get overwhelmed, as there's other enemies that will specifically target him. He's like magic, an additional combat resource, and you're training him and teaching him.

You're training him to be a warrior like you?

Not like you. Kratos is teaching him how to survive. This time period is very much away from the Viking stuff. There's migration before them, and pre-migration before that. We're at pre-migration, in Scandinavia it was a very barren time when it was said the Norse Gods wandered the earth. The Vikings always talked about, "The gods have abandoned us," and the gods not being around, even though they thought Thor, Odin, and Loki walked the Earth. They did walk the Earth, but they just pre-dated them.

Hoping I'm not the only one getting mixed vibes with this GoW. The fact it's a very different game worries me (I love hack n' slash games)

And at the same time can't wait to try this myself next year, or the year after. It maybe very different but am willing to try it first :)

@RSM-HQ: They've said the frantic hack n slash gameplay is still there. They just wanted to showcase a different vibe and elements in the trailer. They know that the frantic combat is iconic to the GoW series.

@justinc882: I know it'll still have combat, but from what I can tell it's more The Witcher than Bayonetta. So far it looks like an Action RPG.

@RSM-HQ: I gotcha, I'm just saying what the devs said. They said they aren't going away from the frantic crazy combat of GoW it's just with a different perspective now. So we should get the good old GoW horde mode crazy battles we know and love.

That kid is a really annoying addition.

One of Kratos main attractions as a character in the storyline

was the fact that Kartos was cruel unapologetic and without any mercy.

Other games characters are usually a lot more clean softer and boring.

it was fun playing with a character motivated by pure rage.

let's hope that kid is a one time addition

and eventually in future games we'll get to see good old Kratos back.

Without any kids to raise

And without playing the Mother or the Father.

Kratos More Angry More Brutal

Slaying and Killing without any mercy.

The problem with getting people to take Kratos seriously is they dragged him through the mud in 2 and 3...

GS should've asked him why they excluded the original Kratos voice actor. It turns off a lot of the series' fans.

@Arkhalipso: So does Kratos' character. Why would you put a character in a different game but change his voice?

But whatever, Kratos is the new Mario now as the dev said it.

Very cool 1st impression. Gotta say that beard definitely triggered some homo-erotic feelings here, much appreciation for that!!! And please don't interpret too much people, this doesn't even have a release date yet, so you can't really say which direction this is taken, except that it looks more mature than previous God of War games (which btw i also very much loved the crap out of). I think it's a good thing, but you know, let's wait and see.

I have a feeling we will see both sides of Kratos. The angry and the sensitive. This is one of the few times that God of War had some emotion put into the title and I feel the segment we saw in E3 was just a portion of a build up to his story against the Norse gods. At the moment, he is settled but something gets taken away from him ( his son?) and he attempts to seek vengeance against the norse gods.

I hope you won't get to kill Norse Gods because they are actually quite likeable in my taste and considered "good" and as "protectors" by Norse/Viking tradition - to this day.

Alsl I played Rune back in the day and always found Norse mythology facinating and inspiring

@chad28_69: if anything you might be facing Tyr - as he is The God of War afterall.

Honestly though, Loki is fine as an enemy, the rest, not so much. I player all 3 GoW games but I was never a fan. I don't care for Greek Gods so much but I like the Norse Mythology ones, and I think killing them is going to make a lot of people un-unhappy including myself..

I am not Scandinavian, I am from Israel, but I listen to a lot of good Scandinavian Metal bands and they have a lot of respect and admiration to the old legends, lore and tales.

Greek gods are often depicted as foul and un-moral on the other hand. Often going against Humanity.

They go against Humanity toying with mankind and giving them hardships. Staying superior to them.

Nordic gods are actually quite good in contrast they protect mankind, they fight alongside them in Ragnarok against Loki -putting themselves at risk.

Tolkin's tale of Silmarillion is highly influenced by Norse mythos and many of the Vallar are equivalent of Norse gods. They also (eventually) stand and assist man.

Now I am not an expert in Norse mythos , but do you really want to kill them?!

@GunEye: I don't know man, fighting Gods is pretty cool. I don't want to fight no-name monsters as bosses, or uber underground Gods. And I think Odin could be a prick sometimes. Both greek, norse, hindu and shinto Gods have more human characteristics and flaws than the Jewish-Christain one. They were not perfect. The songs might only talk about the good qualities.

"Another Mario game with Mario? C'mon guys." - That comparison makes no sense, no one plays Mario because of the story, the story is minimal and always the same, people play bc of mechanics. And with God of War story matters, mechanics are ofc really important, but story has a much more important role than in Mario.

Kratos is linked with Greek myths putting him in a Norse myth seems half a**ed and makes no sense to me. The game looks really cool, but I wish we had a new protagonist, a fresh start for God of War.

I mean the game is not called God of War 4 for a reason right? But it is a continuation of 3, that is confusing. Can people who never played God of War, play this? If so why not a new protagonist? Using Spartan Rage in a Norse setting, it feels out of place, just like Kratos does. Why not do like Assassin Creed? Another setting / myth, another protagonist? That way you could do sequels that feel fresher (I know Assassins Creed was critized for the yearly releases and saminess).

I don't know, it's just my opinion. I played God of War 1 and 2, I liked Kratos then, I think you should let him rest though, he already killed a Pantheon of Gods, I think its enough.

Also Kratos previous family died, that is why is skin is white ash, it's the ashes of his family. I hope they at least acknowledge that in this one.

I'm okay with the new direction on one condition: Kratos' son has to die a brutal death due to some failure on Kratos' part. Kratos is a tragic character, and if this game is an 8-12 hour set up for me to feel absolutely awful about how Kratos' life turned out and sympathize with him going out and killing every Norse god you can think of in the sequels, then cool. Anything less than a gut-wrenching failure on Kratos' part means this game isn't really a God of War title.

I don't like it. If it ain't broke why try to fix it. God of War isn't about Kratos having a son and teaching him to survive. Its about Kratos brutally killing many enemies and gods solo. The new camera angle is just horrid and he doesn't have his trademark blades.

They should not have used Kratos to do this new game if it's not based on the other one at all... Also, I'm not sure about that new camera angle... I LOVED the camera angle (and the gameplay it gave) of the other ones.

i think this god of war game is like a prequel to a new series of the games based on norse gods... and my theory: Kratos son is THOR or Odin! The team isn’t yet ready to reveal the name of Kratos’ son and that's what i talking about!

Why do people keep saying this is fresh. We have seen this type of gameplay style before. Why is it soo cool to babysit an annoying kid and hunt elk? People expect action when playing God of war, not an emotional father son story.

To everyone saying this looks just like The Last of Us, you clearly didn't play The Last of Us.

It's called a camera perspective. They changed that perspective, and this was an introduction to that.

I'm glad they could show how Kratos is still a human. He isn't just a weapon, an excuse for a game, but part of the fall of an all powerful family of gods. That has to have an effect on someone.

Seeing that man where he is now, with a son, having to teach him lessons from his life...The mistakes he made along the way, imparting wisdom. That sounds like real life.

Soldiers coming home to raise a family after wartime may suffer from the mental effects of what they've had to do. Spurts of anger/rage can come out from time to time. They can struggle to control that feeling of being used to bloodshed.

Not that I'm saying this is true all around, but what Kratos went through was uncontrolled for the longest time. He eventually cooled down after he "finished" his goal. He still suffers the effects of what he did though. And I'm mainly speaking to before he killed his family.

The game from a story perspective absolutely makes sense. The camera perspective supports the change in his personality, trying to control his rage. It still exists, but certainly not as free to slaughter thousands of his enemies. It is about protecting one's self, and doing what must be done, as is realistic to do so, but not without control. Focus.

What I personally find interesting is when his son shot him by accident. Not with the rage Kratos had against his family, but lacking the focus necessary to succeed. Breathing, focus, concentration, and thinking before acting....This is a new Kratos, but it comes out of his own experiences and failures.

I was a big fan of God of War 1 and 2, but 3 tried to up the epic anti too far and went from cool to dumb, and Kratos's endless angst really started to grate. Then Ascension proved the old formula had run its course and the series needed to be rebooted.

This reboot looks real cool. I can tell it's God of War, but it looks fresh and interesting again.

@chad28_69: Ehh, either way. Kratos seems less intolerable and the combat looks new and fresh for the series. Both those things needed to change in another God of War, so I'm not too worried about whether this is technically a reboot (it's got the title for it) or a sequel. That's not actually a problem.
