Ghosts 'n Goblins Online confirmed for Korea

Capcom celebrates action arcade game's 25th anniversary with new online installment developed by Seed9.

Ghosts 'n Goblins is going online. Capcom has confirmed a deal that will see Arthur take his unending quest against the undead into uncharted territory next year.

Ghosts 'n Goblins Online should launch in Korea next year.
Ghosts 'n Goblins Online should launch in Korea next year.

Ghosts 'n Goblins Online, which has been confirmed for release only in Korea, will be developed by Seed9. The studio's previous work includes Tomak: Save the Earth on the PlayStation 2 and the PC online shooter Bumpin' Heroes.

A teaser trailer for the game showed protagonist Arthur in multiple suits of armor, dispatching opponents with melee attacks and combos, which are uncommon traits for the series. The clip also showed more familiar faces, from minor enemies to Firebrand, the red gargoyle and star of the spin-off Gargoyle's Quest series.

This is not the first time the series has attempted the jump to online. But like so many leaps in the notoriously difficult arcade series, it met with failure. In 2003, Capcom announced that the massively multiplayer title Ghouls 'n Ghosts Online was in development for multiple platforms at Taiwanese developer Game Factory. The cel-shaded take on the series had an early 2004 beta test announced, but a final launch of the game never materialized.

With series like Lost Planet and Dead Rising, Capcom has made a point of developing games to maximize worldwide appeal. But the Japanese publisher is taking a much narrower approach with its current forays into online-focused games, announcing both Ghosts 'n Goblins Online and Mega Man Online only for the Korean market.

Believe it or not Korea has a very popular trend of online games. Thought I read that for a while they had the most online players of Starcraft on the planet. I believe the game Aion was first developed there, but don't hold it against me if I am wrong. This sounds interesting, but could we get an PSN/XBLA download of one of the games to celebrate the 25th anniversary maybe? Something like Final Fight Double Impact would be great, but I can't think of a game to pare this with. Any suggestions people? 25th, God I feel old.

Would be nice if they did more than just Korea. Ghost n Goblins doesn't seem to be suited to on-line. But who knows it might work.

"Online"? This will undoubtedly fail. And it's unfortunate because if I recall back to my teenage years correctly, the arcade versions of these games were excellent. Wouldn't it make much more sense to release these titles through the XBOX360 "Game Room", or as XBLA titles...?!?

The trailer looks nice, hope this comes Stateside as F2P would love to try it out. Maybe a new singleplayer Ghost n' Goblins and a sequel to Demon's Crest will appear in the future.

The series should have just been made single player for consoles. Make it a little like Fable, but TONS harder (true G&G style), with weird humour, and you have yourself a half decent game.

Just what the world needs, another MMO. There really needs to be a limit on how many can be released per year/month/day.

Epic Fail!! Just release Ghosts 'N Goblins 2 for PSN and XLive. There was a very good PSP G'NG released that I heard was very good and very hard. I never played it because I don't have a PSP. Considered buying one just for this game. Release it on PSN and it's first day purchase for me. Korean only WTF!

If this comes to Wii, consider me sold. This looks fun even though I never knew Arthur to use a Sword. I think that one of the other playable characters was Maximo from the Playstation series. I'm not sure who that guy with the Lagiacruz Armor was.

And yet this game will probably never see a release on US shores. In any case i wish there was a new Maximo game for next gen consoles. with many of capcom's classics getting updates and remakes i think a next gen Maximo or ghouls and ghosts would be interesting.

Well, the theme of tons of loot that is inherent in Ghosts 'n Goblins would have made an MMO based on this franchise a bit feasible, but it doesn't exactly fulfill the MMO game design about a protagonist that is one 'hero' out of thousands, does it? Players would be making multitudes of Arthurs, yet his establishment as a Capcom character will pretty much make sure that no player is going to feel like they 'own' him. On the other hand, I am both intrigued and disturbed that Capcom is releasing these online games only in South Korea. It's like they are considering South Korea to be a testing ground for MMOs - a stereotype that some South Koreans would not appreciate.

Wait... and online Ghosts 'n Goblins? WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? They should have just made another game with Arthur or Firebrand IMO.
