Game Of Thrones Episode 4: What Happened To Jon Snow's Dragon, Rhaegal? (Season 8)

Dragon spoilers within!

Episode 3 of Game of Thrones's final season has come and gone, so have a whole bunch of characters who faced off against the Night King in the Battle of Winterfell. And in Episode 4, Daenerys's battle against Cersei for control of the Seven Kingdoms kicked off again in earnest. You might be wondering what Melisandre said to Arya back in Season 3 and what happened to Jon's direwolf, Ghost.

Another big question was the fate of Rhaegal, Jon Snow's dragon, after he disappeared during the battle with the Night King. Episode 4 revealed the dragon's fate--he survived the battle, but it took a lot out of him. Rhaegal was in bad shape at the start of Episode 4, thanks to the his fight with the Night King and his undead dragon, Viserion. Jon and the Night King tangled in mid-air, with Viserion and Rhaegal attacking each other. Both dragons were injured in the fighting: Zombie Viserion lost half his face, and Rhaegal received a huge gash to his chest. The injury caused Jon and his dragon to fall back to earth, where Jon was thrown off Rhaegal's back. After that, Rhaegal wasn't seen again.

Now Playing: Game Of Thrones Season 8, Episode 3 Breakdown -- The Long Night

Rhaegal weakened state in Episode 4 could be read as a contributing factor to what happened next. Upon returning to Dragonstone, Daenerys was ambushed by Euron Greyjoy and a few ships of his Iron Fleet. The ships had been outfitted with scorpions, Qyburn's giant, dragon-slaying crossbows. And slay they did: A bunch of huge crossbow bolts slammed into Rhaegal, hitting him in the chest, the wing, and finally, the throat. It seemed like in his weakened, wobbly state, Rhaegal had almost no chance to try to avoid the attack or even see it coming. In the end, he went careening into the ocean, disappearing beneath the waves.

So is Rhaegal really dead? He sure seemed to be, given the crossbow bolt that went clear through his neck. There's always the possibility of a weird misdirect since we didn't actually see Rhaegal die, but that seems very unlikely. There could potentially be more dragons in Westeros, but that also seems like a pretty big longshot.

With only one dragon left and Cersei's forces fully outfitted with scorpions, Daenerys has been seriously weakened. She's clearly afraid to lose Drogon at this point, and with her other forces severely reduced, it's looking more and more like Cersei is gaining the upper hand in the war for the Iron Throne. It looks like the other wild cards in play might ultimately be the deciding factor in the war, such as Jaime Lannister returning to King's Landing, the Hound heading back to kick off Cleganebowl, and the MVP of the Battle of Winterfell, Arya Sark.

Reading these articles are bittersweet. I want to know what happened, but I don’t want to go into episode 4 with any prior knowledge. Been holding back from watch the trailer. Need to remember to not visit Gamespot after the new episode airs, too, considering all the spoiler headlines hinting at how things turn out with their complaints/praises.

I'm surprised she's thinking about taking King's Landing this soon. You'd think the folks at Winterfell would need time to regroup and rebuild after this.

She went to Westeros with a lot of allies. But now she's lost all of her Dothraki, the Reach (House Tyrell and vassals), Dorne, and the Ironborn who were with her. What does she have left? About half of her Unsullied army and the North's remnants who btw have not pledged fealty to her. Sansa has made it clear the north bows to no one. So would they even join her fight just so she can rule over them?

@thelongestyodel: so people with jobs and responsibilities arent allowed to have other interests other than just the daily grind of life, and video games of course?

shit, shower shave, work, eat, say hi to the kids, fire up a game for a bit, sleep, repeat. right?

not everybody has the time to catch everything live as it happens. those with jobs and responsibilities? some people would like to be able to sit down and catch up on their favorite show or book or movie or sporting event without having spoilers thrown at them the moment they sit down and go run over to gamefaqs to check up on a video game thread

hell i dont even follow the avengers, im not going to watch it, i never read any articles, and i dont care at all for it, but thanks to glancing over at the gamespot headlines the other day, i pretty much found out within 2 hours of the movie screening exactly how the movie ends, whats going to happen next, and who the main villains are going to be. as well as all kinds of subtle hints and stuff that if i was a fan of the show and had any intention of watching, i definately wouldnt want to have thrown at me

thats some fine journalism. especially this article. those of us who have seen the 3rd episode, we already know the 2 dragons are fine. for those who dont mind subtle spoilers, we've already seen that they are fine during the trailer at the end of the episode. this article brings nothing that we dont already know, and it brings nothing to those who dont already know, because they either dont care for the show, or they arent going to want to know yet because they havent caught up far enough yet. so what kind of discussion is something like this supposed to bring to the table?

@thelongestyodel: Seems like you're missing said brain since the main complaint is that the spoilers are in the title. Like, how could you miss that, a "responsible" "adult" such as yourself lol

these spoiler-ey article titles and descriptions really should not be posted. i've seen the episode but i know quite a few people who are aren't able to watch it yet and are worried about spoilers.

their fears are well founded based on shit like this

@with_teeth26: Agreed. You can avoid spoilers by staying away from sites that discuss TV shows, but when it's posted on Gamespot, a gaming web site not a TV web site, it should not be a gamer's responsibility to avoid their gaming web site to not be spoiled on TV shows.

If Gamespot wants to be a TV web site, they should create a separate site and move TV and film discussion to there and leave it off the gaming site.

So I guess the writer of this article didn't watch the HBO preview clip for next episode. Because in it we see both dragons alive and well.

im glad i watch the show before i mosey on over to gamefaqs to see a bunch of gamespot articles with spoiler titles for sports, books, movies, wrestling, and everything else not related to video gaming

i have autoplay disabled browser-level and i run noscript, ublock origins and adblock plus. sorry but you wont be getting a cent from me out of your clickbait.

i dont even visit this site anymore for this reason. the avengers movie was barely out for 2 hours and theyre already throwing spoilers everywhere in a desperate attempt for clicks. the only reason i even see this filth is because it shows up on the gamefaqs homepage. i go there for games and instead get a bunch of movie or sports spoilers thrown at me from yours truly at gamespot. they really need to find a better partner.

disgusting. stick to covering video games, and maybe one day you'll get a clue on that.

lol clicking the gamespot icon and the homepage is flooded with 95% game of thrones and avengers articles. where are all the games?

thank you for taking the games out of gamespot. said no one ever. i guess this is what we get left with when bungie stops throwing them money to spam Destiny articles 24/7. Surely there is a better way to get your clicks without throwing away your dignity.

It's "clever" writers like this that have convinced me that it's better to just watch the show/movie immediately than deal with minor spoilers that they just can't leave out of their titles.

Seriously, do you guys even have an editor look over these?

Those aren't dragons. Those are wyverns.
Dragons have 4 legs. Wyverns have 2, but use their wings as forelegs. No one gets it right. The Hobbit movie got it wrong. But Smaug has 4 legs.

Why? Easier to animate. It's pure laziness.

@vilified_signals: funny but you are correct. Most artist have always illustrated dragons with 4 legs and wyverns have always had 2.

@vilified_signals: Historically Wyverns are only distinct from Dragons in Scottish, Irish, and English heraldry. Pretty much every other place has no such distinction with them having both two legged and four legged winged dragons. And in modern culture Wyverns are just a type of dragon. Unless you're Dragon Age Inquisition. Their Wyverns are wingless reptiles that walk on four legs.

@Donut0389: Well there you go.
Several sources dictating that wyverns are not dragons. It's simply lazy of any and all the movies or tv shows out there portraying them as dragons.

@mrougeau: a spoiler is information you didnt k ow if you didnt see the feature yet... this title I surmise that something happens to another dragon... so during the entire episode I can be waiting and guessing what's going to happen to that dragon rather than letting the story organically unfold and enjoy as the producers intended. Literally could be.. "episode 3 breakdown"

@mrougeau: No. Don't patronize us. It is 100% a spoiler (even if mild). Just like some of the Endgame stuff that has been popping up.

You're staff, you should know better. Or at least find someone who can write better titles.
