Fortnite's Huge Success Means Its Studio's Other Game Might Not Live On

Paragon is unsustainable right now with its current player levels, Epic says.

Beating PUBG to market on console, Epic's free-to-play shooter Fortnite: Battle Royale has been a massive success. Just recently, the studio announced that Fortnite had passed 40 million downloads as of January, spread across the base game and Battle Royale.

The game's popularity is impacting Epic's other free-to-play game, Paragon, which is now seeing only a "small number" of players who stick with the game in the long term, the studio said in a Reddit post. As such, Epic is unsure about the game's future.

Now Playing: Paragon - The New Dawn Trailer

"The core challenge is that, of new players who try Paragon, only a small number continue to play regularly after a month," Epic said. "Though Paragon has evolved, no iteration has yet achieved that magical combination of ingredients that make for a sustainable game."

Epic added that it does not believe the issue is related to marketing or monetization, noting that it has "good ideas" about how to fix those problems if more players came onboard. Over the course of the coming weeks, Epic said it plans to evaluate if it is possible to come up with a plan to get Paragon to a place where it can see measurable "growth and success."

For now, Paragon players should expect the frequency of updates to slow down. This is due in part to a number of Paragon developers moving to the Fortnite team and the issues mentioned above. It is understandable that Epic would want to keep the updates and support going for Fortnite, as that kind of commitment has been a major part of the game's appeal. Epic also noted that Fortnite is now "far larger than anything in Epic's past."

"We welcome your thoughts on what we should do [with Paragon]," Epic said. "Like you, the team is deeply passionate about Paragon. Like you, we would love to find a path that works. And like the community at large, we are not all in agreement on what could place Paragon on a fundamentally better path for all."

Paragon, a MOBA, initially launched in 2016 as a paid early access game on PS4 and PC, with an open beta and a free-to-play version going live in February last year. As for Fortnite, a huge new update for the game landed this week, making significant changes to the map and more.

In addition to Paragon and Fornite, Epic is working on a free-to-play Unreal Tournament game. The company also operates and licenses the Unreal Engine, which is very popular.

Retain the engine and assets for a future game -- something with a point. Keep those talented engine coders and artists employed on the FN team for the mean time.

@Pyrosa: My thoughts exactly. Maybe they can add or flesh out the lore by using those assets to create an ARPG using the various characters and classes included in the present game. I think a lot of people were just turned off from the beginning when they heard that this game was a MOBA.

@Hagan: Exact same story there -- retain the assets, and use them on a different game. Something new this time, or something creative.

So here's kinda the outline, Epic claims that Fortnite will not be pay2win, it's pay2win. Epic claims that Fortnite is a PvE first game and that the focus will be on PvE until launch, they produce direct PvP, make it F2P ahead of the co-op and basically just give co-op palette swaps as new 'content'. Epic claims that when Fortnite gets vs modes it will be in the form of competitive co-op, more about which team can survive the best, build the best base or score the most kills, then they just ripoff PUBG, a straight up kill everyone mode in a game about humans helping each other survive the zombie apocalypse. Epic claims that Fortnite's production won't affect their other products and yet it's already killed Unreal Tournament and is looking to kill Paragon.

Basically everything they've said has been a lie for the past several years. They're turning into another Little EA.

@Xylymphydyte: I don't disagree with you. But i will say, what has happened with Lawbreakers has probably had an impact on Unreal Tournament. The Shooter genre is pretty full right now. UT was impressive a long time ago. Now it seems pretty generic. The only way I see UT being really popular would be if they made a mind blowing campaign maybe along the lines of the movie Running Man. I think the mass casual market is tired of type of gameplay that COD:IW and LAwbreakers with the high flying wall running type stuff.

@spartanx169x: Lawbreakers is just kinda trash from the ground up. UT is failing since they made it PC only and all the money is on consoles. They also halfassed UT though, they've just been puttering around with it for ages, mostly banking on engine licensing.

But I can't disagree either that the market is going elsewhere, I'd say it's largely getting into the whole 'trolling as a gameplay mechanic' thing now with all of the high stakes pvp with a lot of real losses to experience like with PUBG, The Division's Dark Zone, Dark Souls, DayZ, etc etc.. The opportunity to betray each other is disturbingly popular.

@Xylymphydyte: No one on console would play Unreal Tournament and if anything the shooter scene is much bigger on PC so most of the money would be there

@NoodleFighter: Quake 3 did fine on Dreamcast, UT3 did fine on PS3, it's less about the specific audience and more about diversifying the sales platforms. On average currently about 1/6th of sales of a multiplat games are on PC, 1/3rd on Xbox One and the remaining HALF is on PS4. The only exception is F2P games tend to do better on PC assuming their requirements are low and they're available in all regions, but it's hard to get real numbers regarding F2P. Really, it's hard to get real numbers regarding anything, we only ever get accurate metrics when the game has data integrated into it or there's some sort of community site to scrape like recently occurred with Destiny 2's Community site.

@Xylymphydyte: That was decades ago and the arena shooter genre is nowhere near as popular as it use to be. I doubt console gamers of today would be as interested in those titles as they were back then. Epic Games thought piracy was the reason Unreal Tournament games were declining in sales but its audience taste shifting. Games like Overwatch, Counterstrike: Global Offensive and PayDay 2 have sold much more on PC than consoles. There are almost as many PUBG owners on PC as there are Xbox One console owners in general.

Destiny 2 doesn't represent all game sales but I think you're refering to AAA blockbuster releases which do usually favor consoles. Destiny 2 isn't a good example anyway since the game is dying because of devs/publishers doing shady business practices and the game just being bland in general. PC gamers have moved away from titles like that because they're turning out to be the same shit in a different toilet and PC games have much more choices in shooters to chose from. Call Of Duty isn't even in the top 100 most played games on Steam anymore. Ironically Destiny's alternative WarFrame is easily in the top 10 most played games on Steam and PC has the largest playerbase for the game, but just because a game is F2P does't mean it'll succeed and make lots of money as tons of F2P games fail on PC.

Gonna need the source on PC being 1/6th of a game's sale on average.

GameSpot writes: "In addition to Paragon and For[t]nite, Epic is working on a free-to-play Unreal Tournament game"

That project, the new Unreal Tournament, has been put on hold a half year ago. Already for a full half year there have been no updates for the game, and no new blog posts. The developers have been shifted over to Fortnite, mainly to work on a new map for the Battle Royale mode.

As it stands now, the future of the new Unreal Tournament game is bleak. They could, however, resume development at a later point in time.

I don't play many MOBAs, mainly Smite and HotS every once in awhile.

In regards to 3rd person experience in this genre, Smite is the better game imo

Paragon is a game that no one knows about, it's a great game but no body knows. Epic games just need to spread awareness, It will work out for them.

And why isn't paragon there on the Indian PSN store. They need to release it in the Indian subcontinent. We hungry gamers are looking forward to it's release here.

@rupanka801: Maybe on PC , but on PS4 it has been heavily advertised for a while. Well it was when it was first launched. I think Casuals are just not into MOBA style play. This is what I personnally think ruined Battleborn. Leveling up in match and choosing perks mid match is just too much for a casual player to deal with. Its also why they do well on PC because PC players tend to be more hardcore. As soon as i played the Beta for Battleborn I said it would fail. When it failed, I said the same thing would happen with Paragon after playing it. Paragon has some beautiful maps which would be really fun with a straight first person shooter and a great campaign. But casuals are just not going to play a MOBA for any length of time on console.

surprise surprise, paragon is a kinda ugly looking competitive MOBA and that's all it does, when a game has absolutely nothing to fall back on and see's the MP dying a slow death is assured.......may as well pull the plug.....

I don;t mean to be mean but personally I don't like MOBA's I don't like PVP only games in general and i know i'm not alone so yeah, maybe had they made a Unreal Championship 4 is it?? complete with a training campaign to teach and hone skills and a healthy PVP and maybe some actual PVE content like a horde mode in addition to the standard DM, TDM, CTF and other modes they might have had better luck.....I'm not the biggest fan of UC but i would have went for that....
