Fortnite Coming To Nintendo Switch, According To Ratings Board

Would you play Fortnite on Nintendo Switch?

38 Comments

A version of Epic's smash hit Fortnite may be coming to Nintendo Switch, as previously rumored. The game is already available for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and iOS (with an Android version coming this summer), and now it's been rated for Switch by the Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC). Ratings board listings are not official announcements, but they're often a reliable source of information about new, unconfirmed game releases.

The rating was published recently, on June 1, though this doesn't necessarily mean the port will launch imminently. An Epic Games representative told GameSpot the publisher had no comment to make regarding the rumors, as is to be expected.

Now Playing: Fortnite Coming To Nintendo Switch, According To Ratings Board - GS News Update

It's not clear as yet whether the port will include Battle Royale, Save the World (still in early access on other platforms), or both. However, with E3 just around the corner, we may hear more soon: we already know the game will have a booth at the show where you can play Fortnite and win "exclusive prizes." A Switch version hasn't seemed out of the question since Epic revealed its plans to bring the game to mobile, where it runs surprisingly well.

All other versions of Fortnite received a new update just recently, adding Shopping Carts, Mushrooms, and two limited-time modes to Battle Royale. In addition, Fortnite's Season 4, Week 5 challenges are live now.

Would you like to see Fortnite on Nintendo Switch? Would you play it over the existing editions? Let us know in the comments below!

I'd never play for Fortnight but since it's coming on the Switch I would change my political view on it completely just for the sake of convenience.

I can't wait for this. Right now I have a PS4 but playing with my kids online is not ideal since I would have to play on mobile which sucks. Assuming the Switch version can crossplay with PS4, we can play local multiplayer which would be great. Also, we only have a single TV so being able to play off TV, anywhere in the house or anywhere there is decent wifi, is a huge bonus.

@ZIMdoom:

Why do you think it will be cross play with the PS4 Sony has already proved they don't want this? I'd more expect it to be cross play with the Xbox One if it's even cross play at all.

@Marky360: fair point. I guess, since the PS4 does do crossplay with PC and iOS, I was hoping Sony was only against it with MS.

Well seeing as how Paladins got announced for the Switch with crossplay with the Xbox One and not the PS4 I think it's almost a lock we will see Fortnite on Switch with Xbox One crossplay.

The only way I can get away from 'Fortnite' articles is to click on the Switch tab and look at games that are actually interesting to me. Now the Switch page is gonna be flooded with this stupid ass game. FML. First world problems.

Why would they put Save The World on it? Epic already completely abandoned its initial playerbase that funded Fortnite for its PvE afterall. Maybe you should report on how they defrauded those people--oh wait, I forgot this is a shill website and they probably pay you oodles of money to never shut up about that trainwreck.

@Xylymphydyte: they don't need to pay anyone considering everyone knows about it. All game sites post about it so much because it's the biggest game in the world right now.

@doctor_mg: i was being sarcastic to illustrate a point. that said, i wouldn't be surprised to see fortnite incur a pricing model of sorts on the switch... maybe they will crate a physical version with some nonsense dlc (like mario and zelda costumes, etc) and charge $50 for it... who knows.

I could see them doing a Season pack with all costumes from 1-3, but no way would they abandon the F2P model. It’s earned Epic too much money (as well as Sony and MS)

@Sgt_Crow: that is an assumption, not a fact. it is no secret that every 3rd party game is more expensive on the switch compared to other platforms. skyrim is still going for $80 (in canada) on switch versus $50 on ps4. do you honestly believe that is all bethesda's doing? leave it to nintendo to turn a f2p game like fortnite into a full priced game, or at the least a budget title lol

@Xristophoros: No, it is a fact. Third party have entire control over the pricing of their games. Nintendo cannot choose the pricing unless they are the publisher.

Skyrim is expensive on Switch for two reasons. A) It's a newer release in comparison to the PS4 version B) It cost more to develop and distribute than the PS4 version (they had to make the Creation engine compatible with Switch, and game carts generally cost more than BluRay).

@doctor_mg: l.a. noire on switch costs $65 (in canada) versus $50 on ps4. doom on switch is still selling for $80 (in canada) versus $35 on ps4. hell, even the newly released doom vfr release is selling for $40 on ps4. then there is payday 2 on switch which is selling for $70 (again, in canada) versus just $30 on ps4.

there are many more examples i could pull... even indi games usually have a $10 premuim on switch. do you have an assumption to explain all these scenarios as well? just accept the facts and realize that nintendo can and does add additional fees to the third party games released on its platform (i assume 3rd party publishers either agree to this or do so against their will).

@Xristophoros:

All of those games are again explained by the above. Especially regarding Doom. Working that game to run on Switch would take quite a bit of resources, wouldn’t it?

The game cartridge expense issue is pretty well documented in comparison to CD’s. This happened in the PS1/N64 era too. This is why LA Noire cost more at launch. It’s digital version was 40$ on Switch, it’s physical version was 50$ on Switch.

What indie games cost 10$ or more on Switch? Just about all I’ve seen launch at the same MSRP price. The one thing Nintendo IS in control of are sales. Which they have so very little of. This is why some games seem much more expensive...you can find them on sale other places but rarely on Nintendo.

@doctor_mg: back in the ps1/n64 era, cartridges featured unique chips and ram (on a game by game basis) which added to the cost. your argument does not generally apply to modern times since the switch cartridges are all essentially the same basic configuration, similar to the tech found in flash memory sticks. unless we are talking about switch carts 16GB or larger, the price to manufacture them is similar to ps4/x1 blu ray discs:

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/09/feature_exploring_the_switch_tax_and_why_nintendo_was_right_to_use_game_cards

at any rate, the cartridge theory only goes so far to explain the price disparities at play here. sine mora ex, which is a a tiny game (under 1GB) costs $30 (physical) for switch, versus $15 physical on ps4! does a 1GB cartridge warrant a $15 price hike? if you look into this issue in more detail, you will notice that this is a common trend with many switch releases and there is no way to justify it other than being nothing more than a nintendo tax.

@Xristophoros:

Did you read your own article? It essentially proves my point regarding the cost of cartridge media. Also, no they aren't essentially flash carts. These are more specifically ROM carts and are customized.

Quotes from the article:

"8GB is therefore "the sweet spot" for third parties, as it means they can sell at a cost which matches the Sony and Microsoft versions, in the case of multi-format releases."

"Unfortunately, things start to get a bit more troublesome when shipping a game on a larger 32GB game card. In industry circles, it is said that these cards actually cost more than $20 per cart to the publisher."

"Which leads to the unfortunate term “Switch Tax” being used when it is announced that games like Rime will cost $40 on Switch and only $30 on other platforms. Following a bit of a backlash, Rime’s price will be lowered for the eShop download version while the retail version will include a soundtrack to add value, but it is easy to see the can of worms which this opens."

What's interesting is that 8GB isn't even the sweet spot. As, in the case of some games under 8GB, their digital releases are still less than their physical releases. Such as Rime. In most situations where there is a multiplatform price hike, the Switch's digital offering has price parity.

@doctor_mg: that rule only applies to games 16GB or larger (which there are not many of). did you miss that part? most switch games are on smaller 8GB carts which should not impact the price... i even gave you an example of a game that is $15 more expensive on switch despite being on a 1GB cart. you completely glossed over my point.

this means a game like doom, which is on a 16GB cart does warrant a $10 price increase versus the competition, but it does not warrant $50 price increase (i.e. doom should cost $50 at most, not $80 which it is selling for). the facts are right in front of you and you are choosing to ignore them. now, if a game is eventually released on a 32GB cart, the price of the game will likely be $20 more than the competition which makes sense... but that has yet to happen.

i have never seen someone actively try to justify being price gouged by a company and more than happy to pay an artificial tax.

@Xristophoros: And I gave you an example of a game under 8GB that had an increased price point physically but not digitally and you glossed over mine. I think we're even.

I also gave you more information regarding the Doom port. The Doom port required a significant amount of resources to be put into the game in order to ensure things ran. Doom is also a newer release (I believe it took almost a year for the price to drop on PS4 and Xbox One), and it's on a larger cart. I've explained just about everything, but you're stuck on this conspiracy theory that Nintendo can just strong arm developers and publishers like Bethesda into pricing the games how they want. Which is a ridiculous notion. This isn't 1985 anymore, they aren't on top.

@doctor_mg: rime is a 4GB game which means it is likely on a 4GB or 8GB cart. there is no reason why it should cost $10 more physically in the first place. you are free to believe what you wish, though.

doom is a port of a 2 year old game... you are justifying being price gouged due to the work that went into the port? what? how do you explain shadow of the colossus remake on ps4 launching at a $50 (can) or $40 (usd) price point? FAR more work went into that than the doom switch port. get real man.

Yes, and the fact is that it costs LESS on the digital marketplace than physical.

Seriously, use your head man. I don't want games to cost more. I'm just explaining why they do. I don't think I've even purchased a single game that cost more out of principle.

Because the Switch is seriously underpowered in comparison to the two other consoles. Do you think it wouldn't take more work to make id Tech 5 compatible with the Switch and edit everything to ensure everything runs as smooth as possible? It's also an entirely different architecture.

Shadow of the Colossus is an entirely different circumstance. Sony has great pricing on some of their products, I don't deny that. But it's not the same situation as Doom.

@doctor_mg: shadow of the colossus remake... if it was made by nintendo it would cost $80 here... but since it is made by sony, it cost $50. that basically says it all.

and i believe doom costs $80 digitally as well so your point holds no weight in most cases.

That doesn't say it all. That's an entirely different circumstance. Shadow of the Colossus is a first party game. Of course Sony sets the pricing. It's not a third party game. What about Skyrim? Bulletstorm? GTAV? full priced ports that Sony didn't choose the pricing, the publisher did. But with Nintendo the publishers don't get to choose the pricing? That makes no sense.

@doctor_mg: nintendo 1st party games are always full priced releases anyways... what's your point? even ports like bayonetta 1/2 were re-released at full price on switch as was dk: tropical freeze (a four year old game). whether a game is 1st party or 3rd party, nintendo is exploiting gamers on its platform. and, no, the inclusion of funky kong does not warrant such a high price point on a re-release, but i'm sure you will disagree. how about mario kart 8 deluxe? yes, they included all the dlc, but it is a 5 year old game still selling at full price. it shouldn't cost more than $50 (can) but that would be asking for too much, right?

@Xristophoros:

Yes, and Nintendo has full control over those. Have you ever seen me justify those releases? I think the most I've said was "Well, at least with Bayonetta you get two games".

Donkey Kong Country I've said repeatedly is overpriced, and I'm not arguing Nintendo's pricing structure. I'm arguing the idea that Nintendo has this hard lock control over third party pricing. Which they don't. Again, if they were in a position of power I'd say they might be able to do that. They aren't in a position of power though. Far from it. They've a lot to prove.

Also, it doesn't really explain why more recent games have had much more price parity. Crash N'Sane and Dark Souls are among them. Nintendo can't exploit gamers for games they don't make, publish, or have any legitimate control over. That's like blaming Sony for EA's lootbox debacle.

Mario Kart 8 I feel was justified. They added 6 new characters, new modes/items/customizations, gameplay tweaks, and an overhauled battle mode with brand new tracks on top of including both DLC packs.

@al89lan: it is not cheaper on the switch... surprisingly, it is the same price, though, listed at $50. as capcom already released the sf 2 standalone release last year, they felt like charging any more for the new collection would emit bad feelings. that is my assumption as to why the new sf collection is actually on par with the other platforms pricing, otherwise, it would be $10 more expensive at the least.
