First PlayStation 5 Details Revealed: PS5 Specs, PSVR Support, PS4 Backwards Compatibility, And More

Next-gen has been revealed a little bit early...kinda.

While its release is still far out, the PlayStation 5 is real. In an uncharacteristic step, Sony has revealed a variety of information about its upcoming next-generation system. In an interview with Wired, PlayStation 4 lead system architect Mark Cerny spoke about working on the PS4's successor, which at this point doesn't officially have a name but will presumably fall in line with Sony's past consoles and be called the PlayStation 5. Cerny revealed details about PSVR support, backwards compatibility, cross-gen game releases, specs, and much more. Some key details--such as a specific price and release date--are still unknown, but Sony reaffirmed during a recent investor's call that the system is still at least more than a year away.

In the Wired interview, Cerny confirmed the next-gen PlayStation is partially based on PS4 architecture, which means that it is backwards compatible. Cerny also revealed that it is not an all-digital device, and will accept physical discs. Wired's article describes the transition from PS4 to PS5, as indicated by Cerny, as a "gentle one," adding that numerous games will be released for both PS4 and the next-gen console. The description of a gentle transition indicates that the PS5 will be an iteration on the PS4, instead of being drastically different the way the PS3 was from its predecessor.

Now Playing: Sony Talks PS5 Specs, Backwards Compatibility, 8K, And More - GS News Update

Housed in the console will be an AMD chip that has a CPU based on the third-generation Ryzen. It'll have eight cores of the seven-nanometer Zen 2 microchip. Although the console will support 8K, displaying at this resolution will be dependant on TVs catching up.

The graphics, meanwhile, will be driven by a custom version of Radeon's Navi line. This graphics chip will support ray tracing, something which is starting to become popular in movies and video games. Although it is traditionally thought of as a lighting technique, Cerny says that there are implications beyond creating realistic environments.

"If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players' footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that," he explained. "It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment."

In fact, audio is one the main improvements Cerny is keen to talk about. The AMD chip will enable 3D audio, and this, according to Cerny, is key to immersing players deeper. This naturally led to discussions of PlayStation VR, and while Cerny didn't confirm whether a new version of Sony's headset will be released, the existing one will be supported.

"I won't go into the details of our VR strategy ... beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console," he confirmed.

Another key leap the next PlayStation will make comes through its hard drive. According to Cerny, developers let Sony know that what they want solid-state drives in the new hardware, as opposed to the slower equivalents used in current consoles. These SSDs are relatively prevalent now in laptops, and what Sony is bringing to the next PlayStation is described as being specialized for the hardware.

Cerny demonstrated the change an SSD introduces to gaming by comparing a load sequence from Insomniac's Spider-Man on a standard PS4 Pro and a dev kit of the next-gen PlayStation. On the former, it was around 15 seconds, while on the latter it was 0.8 seconds. This, Cerny added, has implications on how the world can be rendered too, which in turn impacts how quickly Spidey can move through the world. On the new hardware, the camera moves through the city much quicker, as the hardware is capable of keeping up with rendering requirements.

Discussing the SSD, Cerny said "the raw read speed is important, but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster."

The shared architecture between PS4 and PS5, naturally, creates the path for games being developed on the former to appear on the latter. One such game is Death Stranding, which is developed by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and the Kojima Productions team. In the interview, Cerny was asked how Death Stranding fits into Sony's PS5 plans to have cross-generation releases, and reportedly smiled, before a spokesperson merely repeated the game would come to PS4. Obviously, this isn't a clear indication of what Sony's plans are, but could perhaps be a tease, given the context.

Cerny didn't provide any details on any of the services or a broader overview of PlayStation's vision for the next-generation of gaming, instead focusing on the nitty-gritty of its hardware. It is currently unclear when the console will be fully unveiled. Traditionally, Sony would has debuted its new PlayStations at E3, but the company will not have its usual press conference this year. This leaves PlayStation Experience, one of its new Nintendo Direct-like State of Play streams, or a standalone PS5 announcement event as possibilities--that is assuming it plans to reveal the PlayStation 5 this year.

It is also unclear when Sony plans to launch the PS5. In May 2018, Sony's head of PlayStation, John Kodera, said the new PlayStation was three years off. "We will use the next three years to prepare the next step," he said, "to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future."

Although PS5's price was not broached in the interview, an additional piece of the conversation was subsequently shared on Twitter. In that, Cerny described the system's cost as "appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set."

While Sony's plans are still largely unclear, Microsoft's are starting to come into focus. The company is set to have an E3 press conference this year, and head of Xbox Phil Spencer said it is going to go "as big at E3 as we've ever been." In 2018, Microsoft confirmed that a new Xbox was in development, and it is expected that we'll see this next-generation console at E3 2019. More immediately, it has been suggested that an all-digital Xbox One S will be announced soon. As the name indicates, this new console would not accept physical discs and designed around downloading and streaming.

Price. Price, price, price.

The single biggest mic drop moment when the PS4 and X1 came out was Jack Tretton saying $399. One of the biggest obstacles the PS3 had to overcome was, what, $599?

A lot of people who buy consoles (and I am not a PC guy, so don't hate) have no earthly idea what anything in this article means, or what a teraflop is, or anything. They think "What do I need to play what I want, pretty well, for cheaper."

So until we know what this costs (vs. whatever the X2 or whatever they call it) costs, too early to cheer or anything.

@olddadgamer: No more than $449 or it'll be DOA like the PS3. I think Sony learned they're lesson. It'll will probably be $399 unless inflation has bumped up by then.

@darkelf83: They're approaching $100 mil units sold. Why wouldn't they say, you already have a ps4 now just save for a ps5. Especially since they confirmed that next gen games will also release on ps4.

@sickie: Tell that to the PS3. Yes, it caught up, but one of the reasons the 360 blew by it out of the gate was price point.

@olddadgamer: Not saying you are wrong, but it's a bit odd that people are this price sensitive about something that will last them five years. Hundred bucks more or less shouldn't really be a deal breaker. Especially given that a single game cost $60+.

(I understand that some people have a very tight financial situation and obv for them every dollar matters. I'm talking in general here).

Sadly, they didn't change their horrible controller. sharp edged slippery sticks create the most cramp inducing, hand hurting controller I have ever used. It's my only complaint with the PS, but it's a big one. If they would let me use 360 controllers, I would use my system a LOT more. As it is, that garbage PS controller prevents me from playing everything but exclusives.

@mushywaffle: I've got both an Xbox X and PS4, I can easily go back and forth between the two consoles because the PS4 while not perfect is greatly improved from the crap of prior playstations. I have Battlefield 1 on both and can seamlessly go from one console to the other and never notice when playing.

@mushywaffle: Not sure I follow. From PS3 to PS4 you mean? Or 4 to 5? I'm sure there will be iterative changes to it. But the controller changed pretty dramatically from 3 to 4. Much more rounded. Maybe it still gives you problems, though. Just trying to clarify what you meant. There's also so pretty awesome aftermarket controllers out now. That Astro one is something else.

@dr_derogatory: I get what he's saying. It only affects people with larger hands because it happens to me. The controller makes you close so much of your hand around it because it's too narrow at the handled parts. Where the Xbox lets your hands be opened up more, so they don't get fatigued as fast.

@Vodoo: I mean everyone is different, but I have pretty large hands and I have zero issues with the PS4 controller. Now going from the 4 to the 3, yes, noticeable and cramp inducing. The ergonomics of the Xbox One controller are better, and I definitely wouldn't ever contend otherwise. Just saying comparatively the 4 controller is significantly better than what came before it. If I could have a symmetrical analog stick Xbox One controller for the 4, I'd take that in a heartbeat. That's where the expensive aftermarket controllers come in, though. Like I mentioned, that Astro controller is pretty amazing.

It's all there. Everything I've been saying for years now. Backwards compatibility (with bonus enhancements), SSD drive, Zen 2, ray tracing… And current-gen PSVR compatibility on top of it all. Damn, that is gonna be a hell of a generational leap.

Haters were quick to dismiss.. until now. "Oh, BC is bad for business, never gonna happen". "SSDs and RT? This thing will cost a thousand bucks". And so on so forth.

It's remarkable how people can only see the future based on their current reality, as if the future were now.

Oh, and BTW: how awesome it is that Sony allows Cerny to give this interview and talk so openly about the PS5 even before it is announced. Nice work Sony, you got me VERY excited.

@gfantini: I’m excited too :)

BC can still be bad for business. It’s not hate but just the truth.

It’s capitalism and competition that allow for this to exist though.

i.e. MS adding BC on XBOne for many of their games is (imo) why we’re seeing it revitalized with Sony.

I’ve always been a Sony fan regardless, which is why I said this wasn’t “hate”. I’m glad they’re doing this :)

@smouche_mole: I'll explain: when I say "haters", I mean people with that constant and irritating negativity. I mean, BC was always going to happen going into next-gen. And no, it's not because Microsoft pulled it of with the Xbox One. It's because it's technically doable now.

You see, the PS3 was a bit of a Frankenstein. The CPU within that device was crazy exotic whereas the PS4 is a slightly customized x86 PC. Backwards compatibility was just not feasible. Now, it's important to remember that the PS4 was the only console released by Sony that was not BC at launch. Note: at launch. Which shows how breaking compatibility was never a business decision. It was a technical one. Making revenue from HD remasters was a byproduct of that. Not the end objective from the beginning.

The story is completely different now. The PS5 shares most of the PS4's underlying architecture, which makes BC a walk in the park. It was a given since Sony shifted to x86.

But the haters (sorry) love to shout out how greedy and anti-consumer these large corporations are. Oh, and one more thing: backwards compatibility isn't necessarily bad for Sony. A smooth generational transition could help selling a lot of PS5s early into the next-gen. And there will always be a market for remakes with enhancements. Just have a look at the ray traced Quake 2 technical demo. It's mind blowing. We could well be heading into the era of the "RT remaster". :)

After the stellar lineup PS4 had, I'd be ready to go with PlayStation as my primary console next gen.
They'd just have to admit the DualShock is an outright terrible design for a controller, and make one for human hands.

Usually when Sony tips their hand this early it's because they're trying to trick their competitors into playing their hand too soon. I expected the next PS would delve into ray tracing, but there is time for more advances in the next couple years. Hopefully they can take advantage of those before the PS5 actually releases.

I also hope that SSD isn't one of those cheap 500gig ones. We need way more than that for 4K gaming.
